Cooking Party - Iron Chef Challenge (Secret Ingredient: Refreshing)
I will have to paraphrase this recipe for you when I return from an appointment this am.
Help me decide which restaurant to go to.
Not sure what you mean, "if alcohol is involved". Normally you have to "buy" the wine pairings with the tasting menus, it is not included in the food price. If you mean alcohol in the food, usually it cooks off with any heat that is used to cook the dish, but if you're unsure, you would want to inquire with your server, and request dishes that do not have residual alcohol in them.
As far as dress code, there are only about 2 restaurants that require jackets for men in LA. Spago, Providence & Studio are not one of them, I don't believe. Again, when making the reservation, inquire if there is a dress code. Providence probably has the best food, and Studio has the best view.

What's for Dinner? Part 99! [old]
I'd help you with that, if I only 1) could cook Asian like you, and 2) had kids that were a lot older!!
But she does make it sound like fun, doesn't she??!! ;p))

There it is!! Beautiful plates, by a beautiful girl! 8^))
What do you bring to the Hollywood Bowl?

Ok, now I'm confused. Which is it, Uncle Bill's or Original Pancake House?? I can't recall which one now that sounded really good.......can you elaborate on both for me please? Or if too off topic, feel free to email me off line. I really would like to take the fam out for breakfast at one of these places. Thanks, again!

Oh gosh, that duck hash was wonderful, just great, and I am not a huge fan of homemade types of hash, we actually enjoy the canned stuff, though I do cook it in patties, and brown them really, really well since we enjoy the crispy crunchy bits also. The only homemade version of CBH I really loved was at the Four Seasons in NYC, but I would've loved an old shoe in that suite.
Anyway, wiener, I know you've talked up that place in Redondo a lot, so next weekend I am determined to try the Original Pancake House. Any tips on fighting the crowds? Can we reserve a table? Do we have to go wicked early? And is it street parking only or is there a lot? TIA!

Oh No!!! Darned weather! Sure they will be delicious anyway!

Oh, I know. I have a great Gourmet recipe for Cucumber cups stuffed with Crab-wasabi-lime salad, and they were pretty easy to make and refreshing.
Also, a F&W recipe for a cold soup - Spicy Cucumber -Avocado soup, also super easy and refreshing.
Let me know if you'd like the recipes. : ))

I don't have a gazpacho recipe, since I don't eat it. But I'm sure you can find one easily that would suit your tastes.
I don't even want to show you the picture of the dessert, then you'll be mad cuz you'll want to make it, but I think you're right, too many complicated components to that dish to demonstrate. But panna cotta by itself is pretty refreshing and easy to make, it's essentially an Italian milk pudding that can be made with a number of ingredients. And you're right, a sorbet or granita is too obvious. Let me go slice & clean my leeks and get back to you if I think of anything else!

Sorry ina!! Yeah, I was debating putting up pics of it, but will refrain, for the sake of all parents!! LOL!

Can I come over?? I want that instead of pork roast. ;p))
Cooking Party - Iron Chef Challenge (Secret Ingredient: Refreshing)
That sounds like fun, attran99!
When I think of refreshing, I think of granitas, sorbets, and cold soups. Can it be any course? If dessert, that's easy. We just had brunch at a place up here in SaMo Place and the dessert was super cool & refreshing - panna cotta with strawberry-orange-sake salsa, and I believe the sake was made into a gelatin w/ some strawberry or red juice from the fruit, it was incredibly light and refreshing, the whole bit. Really lovely with impressive presentation.
A blender gazpacho could be refreshing. So can a vodka tonic ;p)).

Well, after a week of visitors and lots of cooking (and hence, leftovers) & eating out, I am having a WTF is for dinner tonight anyway moment.
I've thawed out a pork loin roast that has been waiting patiently for me to do something inspired with it while chipping away at all the leftovers around it. So I suppose I'll roast or braise that, though it's quite warm here today, one of the warmer days so far this summer.
If braising it, I'll clean and slice some leeks for the bed, they turn all caramel-ly and silky, they're just delish. Or if roasting, I will glaze it with some maple syrup and mustard. And throw the last of those baby heirloom potatoes in the pan at the end, they don't take 10-15 mins to roast. Been wanting to make some ratatouille lately, but didn't pick up any eggplant, so that will have to wait. Possibly a spinach salad to go with, with some fruit, nuts and cheese in it. And maybe we'll make some quick pops with mango-lemonade juice, they only take about 7-9 minutes to freeze with the new gadget my Mom brought for the kids.

Haven't heard of that one either. WTF, I'm falling down on the job!! Thanks for the heads up, Jase.
Squishing potato chips in your sandwich...anyone else do this?
All the time. I also do it with Fritos.

No, I've not tried the place in El Segundo.
My husband says the truck is definitely delicious and authentic, right down to the wiz. I've tried the Great Western Hoagie Co on Lincoln (or whatever it's called). It was tasty, but not very authentic, IIRC. No wiz, just sliced cheese, but I think it was at least provolone.
Cool/Trendy restaurant in LA
Somehow, when I hear "cool/trendy" I do not think of The Galley.
You want cool & trendy in this town you should be prepared to pay for it. $$ - $$$ is not my idea of OP's description "off the charts expensive". But that is just my opinion.

Don't worry, I wouldn't hold you to it if they weren't ; )). Sounds like they do have a Philly connection though.

I've not seen that place, will have to check that out - as an ex-East Coaster, I crave a good Philly cheesesteak now and then, thanks!
What do you bring to the Hollywood Bowl?
When we lived on the east side of town, I made our own picnic and we brought that along to eat before the show - fried chicken, salads, snacks and champagne.
Now that I know better than to lug around that heavy picnic basket, I would get Mozza2Go for the next time.

Sure, C-Bob. It's owned by chef Brooke Williamson(sp) the former chef & owner of Beechwood. It's a great beer bar with tons of craft and imported ales, many of them Belgian. Like her spot Hudson House in Redondo, it is essentially a bar that serves great food. I had the Tripel burger, a pork burger with duck confit and dry aged beef - very tasty. My DH had another burger that was not quite as decadent as mine, but just as tasty. And they have great bar snacks you can order like country duck pate w housemade marmalade, and a bowl of olives, almonds and dried cherries which were addictive and went well with the beers. Sorry I can't remember the beer we had, that is the hubby's department, I just remember it being very tasty, even though I am not a regular beer geek, like he is. Small menus at both places, but I get the feeling everything is really yummy, as was the case at Hudson House. Both seem like great neighborhood bars. Would be back weekly if it were in my 'hood. HTH!

Disagree. Obviously you haven't checked out my two recs of Hudson House and the Tripel. And the food at both of those places blows FO out of the water. And you can have ketchup if you want.
