J'Anita's to leave The Avenue Pub

Guess everyone is entitled to an opinion.
I truly miss J'Anita's food and talking with Kimmie and Craig at Avenue Pub.

looking for info on somethings!!

Nopal is cactus...used in Mexican cooking.
Chayote or as it is called in New Orleans mirliton is as described by ms. chow. In New Orleans we like to stuff them, usually with a shrimp and bread crumb stuffing. I did not know it could be eating raw, but don't see why you couldn't.
Green Tuna is the fruit from a cactus, this is also a new one on me.
Yuatia is similiar to Taro root.
Boniato is a sweet potato that has white flesh.

I found this info using google and the search function here on the forums incase you want some more info, there was so good info.

HELP! English girl from Hong Kong looking for good food $20 or under!

If you want fried chicken just walk into the nearest Brothers gas station, just make sure you get a kabob with your chicken.
I have had more dealings with Al Copeland then I care to think about, but if he is the measure of a True Blue New Orleanian then I am going home right now to pack up my house and move!

Natchitoches, LA (Meat Pies, etc.)

Mariner's, http://www.marinersrestaurant.com, is one of the better "up scale" places in Natchitoches. I do miss those meat pies though. Pioneer Pub has some good food and a good beer selection. Best mexican is El Nopal, for BBQ go to Graysons, Magee's Patio Cafe has some good hamburgers and the like and there is another hamburger place on the bypass near Mariner's that was one of my favorite places, but I just can not think of the name.
Now I am thinking of going for a visit!

San Antonio...Funky Spots for a New Orleans Girl

LOL...I am from Metairie and am in San Antonio till This coming Saturday(19th). Liberty Bar is great, little on the $ side but well worth it. They make a great margarita too. Taqueria Guadalajara on 2702 Roosevelt Ave just south of the city is really good. Blue Star brewing in the King William District was great, I recommend the Blueberry Wit. Going to Mad Hatters for breakfast tomorrow. Henry's puffy tacos, Chris Madrid's for burgers, Dewiese's Tip Top Cafe in Fredricksburg and Los Barios. I am sure there are more but these are just a few that I have written down to go to.

I thought Rain was made at the Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Is Whole Foods hypocritical ? or merely inconsistent ?

That is very true...guess thats why I have been in the one near me a whooping 3 times and 2 of those times it was to get beer that just is not sold any where else around me.

Is Whole Foods hypocritical ? or merely inconsistent ?

I look at it like this...eat and drink what ever you want. Learn portion control and do some form of exercise every day. Instead of getting on the elevator to go up or down 1-2 floors use the stairs, park in the back of the parking lot and walk and anything else you can think of. The little things add up fast.
It is strange that they would have everthing but diet drinks though...means one more place to stop at on the way home, just to get drinks. Time to go work off all those hot wings I eat for lunch.

Pub in Harpers Ferry

Sorry about not responding diablo...long story. It was the basic bar fare. It was good food though. Cheap is what the tap was. I don't know what it is about this geographical area but it is a lot cheaper then New Orleans.

Magic Hat No. 9

Wish I had some right now...The wife and I both love #9. I also went through the beers in the mixed pack, jinx stands out as being my favorite.

What are you drinking right now?

How was the Hallertau...I have one that has been slowly aging at 55deg for about 4 months.

Pub in Harpers Ferry

Went looking for Country Cafe on Washington St., but when we got there they were closed. We walked across the street to the Pub. We meet a local outside and got the scoop on the place. Just ring the door bell and walk into a great local dive. Food was good, beer was cold and people had us laughing all night. If you are near or going near Harpers ferry you need to go into this place for a glass of Magic Hat #9 if nothing else.

Metairie neighborhood restaurants

Try Impastato's for italian food, but be ready to eat for 3 hours.
Royal China for Dim Sum, the food off the menu is good also.
Peppermill, but I have yet to see a peppermill in the place. I love fresh ground pepper!
Chad's Bistro, they make a good martini. Dirty please!
Laurentino's, The owner is a kick, the Tapas is great!
Swamproom, Big burgers that are good.
Acropolis, Good Greek food, need I say more!

What are ya'll thoughts on Rain vodka?

Eating New Orleans dry...

Maurice's on Carrollton closed due to them moving back into the old bakery and that location just not making enough money.

Eating New Orleans dry...

If you are going to come out to Metairie you really shoud try Laurentino's.

Limoncello

Yes, I added 6 1/2 cups of single strength simply syrup. It does have a very nice lemony bite to it. Have been using it to make some nice whiskey sours.

Limoncello

I made some a few weeks ago and I must say it is better after sitting for a few weeks. I used one bottle of Everclear and the skin of 10 lemons, but I only let it sit for 6 days. When I pulled the peels out they were very brittle and had no color left to them what so ever. Should I have let it sit longer?

Orange Liqueurs

Will have to look for those.

Orange Liqueurs

They have one that is called Grand Orange. There is also a Mandarin Liqueur, but neither is at the store I go to. I need to see if there are any other stores around me.

Old-school drinks...what do you remember?

Hehe...I'm 25 and the same reaction when I order/make one.

Orange Liqueurs

That is kinda what I figured...I think it is strange that they care about 8 of Brizard's products, but not their Triple Sec. Guess I need to bug the manager about it.

Orange Liqueurs

Other then color, is there a difference between Triple Sec, Orange Curacao and Blue Curacao. My local store only carries Marie Brizard's Orange Curacao. I picked up the other two in the Leroux brand. What is ya'll opinion of Leroux? Thanks

Old-school drinks...what do you remember?

I have to say that an Amaretto Sour was my first mixed drink and it was also during my college years. Uuuummmm... now to go home and make a batch.

Need a light/low carb beer for beer lover on a diet

I agree whole heartedly...I found Anchor Small Beer Saturday and tried it Sunday. I am going back today to buy every bottle of it they have.

Serrano's Salsa Company - Really Bad?

Same here...not bad, but not great. If I am going to see a movie I usually eat at Serrano's.

meat and fruit..so verr verr wrong...

I like my "Hawaiian" with extra onion. Unfortunately the human brain becomes conditioned after several similar responses to the same stimulus. If you have too many bad experiences with fruit in your food you will develop a natural aversion to it. In other words there is nothing wrong with the way you feel, you just don't like some things that others do.

ATK - Bud-battered fish - really? (moved from Food Media & News)

I like using New Castle.

Good cocktail for BBQ?

I just did this 2 weeks ago, I used a recipe for Mai Tai's that I found here scaled up for 25 people. There was only about 15 of us and the Mai Tai's did not even make it to lunch time.
