Christmas Restaurant Tour in Santa Fe

No need for a reservation at the bar at the Compound. As mentioned, it's a great place to hang out. We often drop in for dessert & drinks as well as the occasional lunch or dinner.

Frasca Hype (Boulder)

Although I think Frasca is excellent, I don't think that it is the food nirvana as espoused by the large contingent of Frasca groupies. However, one thing that I have admired is the attention to fresh ingredients and reasonable portions that resemble what you would find at fine restaurants in Europe. If you want your plate overflowing, then go to the Cheesecake Factory! It's also my opinion that the prices are not extreme. When you consider that a steak at any of the big name steak joints begins at $40 and then escalates and then you start adding sides dishes, etc., all of a sudden Frasca, The Flagstaff House, etc. start to seem pretty damn reasonable.

DENVER Challenged

Jim, Thanks for the education. I spend every Christmas in Minneapolis with my in-laws, most of whom think that going to Lee Ann Chin's is adventurous! Forget Vietnamese.

My opinion about green chile is that it is more represenative of the individual maker, rather than the region. Orlando's in Taos is probably my favorite and quite different than what you would get at Bobcat Bite in Santa Fe. Both are excellent. I like hot, so I really enjoy Efrain's (in Lafayette) chile verde. The original Chubby's is also on the top of my list.

Went to Trader Vic's, Las Vegas--Ugh!

This is surprising? Trader Vics and Planet Hollywood are two chains that epitomize mediocrity. Why would anyone go to either place?

DENVER Challenged

Denver has great food. I would not agree that it's behind Boulder (I live there) and the Valley. The Vail Valley is pretty damn limited.

That being said, my opinion is that there is no iconic food associated with Denver as in your other examples. And, I'd take issue with Memphis & KC being the BBQ capitals - Austin and surroundings are my favorite but BBQ is iconic to all three locales. Vietnamese as a Minneapolis icon - not in my opinion. I doubt that most people think of it in the same way that they do Philly cheesesteak.

Dinner near the Fox [Boulder, Co]

I, too, assume that you're going to the Fox for a concert which are usually at night. Unless something has changed and they have those popular 8am shows!

A few doors down is Mamacitas which has dynamite mole and excellent fish tacos. Their salsa & guac is actually bland beyond belief - a real mystery. Of course, there's always the Sink. I read about new Asian noodle place that has opened but haven't been there. A very short walk down Broadway will take you to Khow Thai which is excellent but no liquor license. I prefer a Singha with my Phad Thai but a Thai iced tea will work in a pinch.

Farewell Tom's Tavern - Boulder

Had my final lunch at Tom's Tavern last week. The are closing for good tomorrow. It was nice to see a line out the door for people waiting for a table, just like in the old days and I've been going to Tom's since I moved to Boulder in 1968. Tom's is a no-frills, basic burger joint. Did they serve the world's best, most creative burger? Nope. But it was fresh, cooked perfectly and the fries were excellent. So was the "dip" of salad. The unpretentious decor was truly refreshing and the servers were efficient and didn't feel the need to tell you their name. My favorite was the Valerie Perrine look-alike from the early '80s. I'm going to miss this Boulder icon.

My place in Santa Fe for New Year's is the Compound. Not too many party poppers and balloons, but the food is extraordinary.

Cherry Creek North Denver

I'm not impressed with North. Have had a just so-so dinner there, nothing exceptional. It's surprising, since it's owned by the same outfit that also runs Bloom in Flatirons. I don't know how down-to-earth your family is but one of my favorites in Cherry Creek is The Squealing Pig pub. Looks pretty grim from the outside, but warm & inviting inside. Nice selection of beer and Irish Whiskey. Their Scottish Egg is outstanding!

Grimaldi's pizza Las Vegas review

I sure hope you meant that they don't put enough "coal" in the oven. They don't use coals, as in the burnt down residue from wood. It's real, honest to goodness coal that comes out of the mines. Don't let Al Gore know about this, he'll try to shut down Grimaldi's for contributing to global warming.

Thanksgiving in Denver

Like I said, it's been years. But, I was at the Westin for a martini after the Rockies lost the first home game of the World Series and I *swear* there were people sitting inside. But it just might have been a Hendricks hallucination.

Thanksgiving in Denver

Aside from the restaurants already listed, my guess is that anyplace in a hotel will be open. Some suggestions:

Augusta in the Westin Tabor Center. Haven't been there for many years, but it used to be excellent.
McCormick's in the Oxford. Part of the chain of upscale places, but consistently good.
Panzano in the Hotel Monaco. Like Megiac said, I'm not sure I'd be up for Italian.

Frasca Hype (Boulder)

I went to Restaurant 4580 the week-end before last. Didn't realize it was the last day of First Bite Boulder so the place was packed. Got a couple of seats at the bar and was treated like royalty. Food was dynamite, too. This is not an unusual experience.

Trip to Denver: Need Beer advice

Will you have a car and be willing to drive a little? If so, head to Boulder first for a stop at Avery and then Twisted Pine. Continue to Lyons for lunch or dinner at Oskar Blues, home of Dale's Pale Ale and other outstanding varieties.

Vegetarian Thanksgiving Options in Boulder, CO

You'll have absolutely no problem finding good vegetarian dining in Boulder. In fact almost all restaurants with the exception of the Cork have at least one if not several really good vegetarian entrees on the menu. I can't speak to which places will be open on Thanksgiving, but here are some suggestions:

Leaf. This is a true, fully vegetarian place.
Sunflower.
The Kitchen.
Trattoria on Pearl.
Alba.
L'Atelier.
Q's.
Restaurant 4580.
Organic Orbit.

Las Vegas Restaurants w/a Baby...

Are you looking for a "famous chef" place on the strip or would you consider driving a little? I've seen families with babies (and other young children) at both Rosemary's and Mayflower Cuisinier. The kids were actually better behaved than some of the adult customers.

Valentino's - Las Vegas

Wow, our experiences have been 180 degrees. First of all, I was given a menu after the server felt it was the proper time - which took what seemed like an eternity. From there, things went downhill fast. In my opinion, Valentino's takes mediocrity to new depths! Tasteless sauce and uninspired preparations, but at least the prices are astronomical. It's little sister, Valentino "Light" has also been terrifically bad. I'd go to Buca de Beppo before hitting Valentino again.
