Paleta Cart Rental/Catering

Hi, I'm looking to have a paleta cart at an upcoming summer party. Any idea where or how I can find one? I know Goodpops and Mom and Pops could do it, but I'm looking for more typical Mexican flavors that appeal to kids. Mango Chile or Mijito probably won't cut it with this young crowd (though I'd be in heaven!) The good ol' cart on the street would be great, but I need someone reputable that I can count on showing up at the right time and place. Thanks!

Mesa Grill (near Mesa & Steck) has closed. Not a gourmet food mecca by any means, but it was decent for a neighborhood joint and a solid meal on busy weeknights.

Best Chili In Austin

Max's Wine Dive had a pretty decent bison chili with great flavor and spice, though looking at their menu, it looks like they've changed it up - bison, venison, beef and bacon chili.

Challah Bread

I would try the HEB on Far West with the Kosher Area or the Randall's on Balcones which has a kosher bakery. Central Market and Whole foods carry it as well. Sometimes you can find it at Great Harvest, but I would call them first before heading out. Good luck!

Is Lupe Tortilla Open?

I was there last Thursday and was completely underwhelmed by everything I had. The salsa was mediocre, as were the chicken fajitas in my "taco" salad. There was nary a taste of the dressing that was supposed to come with that salad. I have given them the benefit of the doubt since they weren't officially open, but I was quite taken aback by the steep prices. I really don't think they can command them.

Well, if we're really going to nitpick - it's Kerbey Lane :)

Ladies' Luncheon/Tea

Don't discount the Four Seasons. We had a bridal luncheon there for my sister-in-law and we were in a small private room. I am sure they could do the same for you and provide whatever you would like in terms of food/drink. They even prepared some kid-friendly fare for my daughter! I don't remember the menu since it was over 5 years ago, but I remember we all enjoyed it!

Pomegranate Molasses source in Austin area

I'm pretty sure Central Market sells it as well. One of the classes I took at the cooking school had a recipe that required this ingredient and the chef mentioned they sold it downstairs, I believe by the sodas. Ask them to show you where.

Blue Baker and Masala Wok Coming to Arboretum Area

It looks like Blue Baker (http://bluebaker.com/) is coming in next to where Estancia Churrasqueria will be in the Arboretum and Masala Wok will be a new addition at the Shops at Arbor Walk. New life for the Arboretum, more craziness for the Arbor Walk center!

Family oriented restaurants with good food and music?

We've also had success at The Nutty Brown Cafe, just south of the Y at Oak Hill. Nice outdoor area and amphitheater and some kids' nights with child-friendly entertainment.

Hard Hat Report Vol 7

I think this must be Noodles & Co. I saw an article a few weeks ago that they were coming to Austin, but they hadn't announced a location.

Just went for lunch a couple of days ago and was disappointed. To start, we wanted aguas frescas, but apparently, everything on the back side of the menu "is not available". My hubby ordered the carne asada enchiladas and I wanted some tacos a la carte as shown on the "front" side of the menu. Well, the waitress told me I couldn't get them. That they don't sell those anymore. I could get a taco plate with the tacos and rice & beans, but not just the tacos. I couldn't believe it. Ended up getting the same as hubby. The meat was OK, though a bit tough and with a lot of gristle. The red salsa was the absolute highlight of the meal though. If I could just buy a bottle to take home, I'd be happy. I don't think we'll be going back....

good views around lake travis & in austin?

Since you're not looking for "good" food, here are a couple of other options:

Iguana Grill, Carlos 'n' Charlie's, and I think you mentioned the Travis at Lakeway Inn.

Steiner Ranch - Am I Missing Something?

I also love Los Pinos - good homemade food and delicious salsa. The word must be out because it always seems busy. Another favorite of mine and my family's is Rocco's down at 620 and Lakeway Dr. We always have good food and it is consistent. I usually go for the Pepper Steak Marsala and am never disappointed. Tomato Caprese salad is great too. There's the new Kahuna's Icehouse right in front of the Home Depot/Target on 620 near 71. I haven't been there, but it seems to attract a pretty good crowd.

piri piri peppers in Austin, TX?

I get it at the Randall's on Balcones @ 2222. It's where the hot sauces are, usually near the top shelf.

piri piri peppers in Austin, TX?

I haven't had luck finding the peppers. Have you tried talking to the produce folks at Central Market? Even if they don't currently carry them, they may be able to procure them for you as a special order item. They have offered to do that for me when I wanted ostrich steaks. In the meantime, I get my fill with Nando's Peri Peri sauce which I get at my Randall's or thru mailorder. Good luck!

"Unpretentious" must have some other local meaning that I'm unaware of; Or, what's with the service at Chez Nous?

I had a taste of this "attitude" before even being seated. My husband and I went to Chez Nous to celebrate an anniversary. I tried to make reservations, but they only take reservations for parties of 6 or more. Wouldn't you know it, we show up and the place is full of 6-toppers with diners. There were a handful of 4-tops and maybe 2 or 3 2-tops. The wait for these small tables was so ridiculously long (over an hour). I expressed my displeasure with the fact that they had refused to take my reservation earlier in the day and were now wanting us to wait over an hour for a table. The hostess did not direct us to the bar and was so high on her horse that she never came back to get our names for the wait list. Needless to say, our anniversary starting on a sour note, we were forced back out on the street to try to search for another place to dine - sans reservations - on a Saturday night. Thanks a lot Chez Nous!

Hungarian/German Meat Market?

I'm sorry I don't have any sources for you, but maybe you can ask the folks at European Bistro in Pflugerville. Not only do they serve Hungarian food, but the owner used to have (and I think still does) catering of Hungarian and other European delicacies.

Good luck!

knife sharpening in Austin?

I may be mistaken, but I think Faraday’s Kitchen Store on 620 also offered knife sharpening every so often.

Mirabelle - big disappointment

I was at Mirabelle for lunch a couple of weeks ago and also had a bad experience, though this time it was the waiter who gave us terrible service! He was absolutely rude! We were a party of 8 or 9. Maybe thinking that the tip would be automatically included, he figured he didn't need to do us any favors. Luckily, he did not include the tip. We all paid separately but the waiter decided to pocket $20 in cash that was meant to go towards the food bill. We eventually sorted it out, but he could not have been any more contemptuous! I was quite disappointed since I usually enjoy this place tremendously.

The only place we like out there is Rocco's. Good, consistent food and a great patio.

Great Patios in the Spring

I think maybe you mean Cafe Bleu? Right color, wrong language ;-) . I'm not sure if it's still open. I think we went last summer and it was definitely the most decent food on the lake, though not out of this world. I think they close in the winters and re-open in the spring or summer. I also enjoy Aunt Tilly's and Johnny Fin's patios, though more for the patio than the food!
