Austin Monthly Barbeque Showdown

We went well after the lunch rush and were the only ones at Freedmen's (a big party had just left and another group arrived later) and at Ruby's, though Black's had a few people the whole time....

Hubby and I wanted to participate in the voting but were surprised that we had not been to or heard of some of the places listed or hadn't actually had their food in many, many years. We thought it only fair to go try these places out before we vote, We hit 3 of them today (the campus area) - Freedmen's, Ruby's, and Black's.

We were very pleasantly surprised by the brisket at Freedman's. Even the lean was nice and moist, a good, smokey flavor throughout and a delicious peppery crust. We can't say the same about Ruby's. That brisket had no flavor. It seemed more like corned beef or lunch meat. Bleh. My hubby did like their creamy slaw though. Black's was good all around. We'd had their bbq in Lockhart a while ago. Briskets had some smoke, the beef ribs were very good and meaty, and the corn casserole was tasty. We're stuffed and have plenty of leftovers for dinner, but hope to hit Micklethwait and Kerlin on the East side tomorrow before round 1 voting closes. Ahhh, the things we must do....

RIP April 2015

I find it a bit suspicious that they have 95 likes and 3 5-star reviews on their FB page and they haven't even opened yet! I hope it's not a sorry reincarnation of the same-old...

Indian Palace on Far West has closed and is making way for Saffron Indian Fusion or something to that effect. A solid Indian restaurant in the area would do so well! Everything else nearby is so mediocre....

Austin's first Twisted Root Burger has closed. I'm not surprised. Tried it once, and it was pretty awful. I went mainly to try one of their funky game meat options, but, they didn't have any! I may give their new location a shot if it offers the full menu, but with so many great burger options in town, who knows how long this one will last.

Pacific Rim coming soon to the spot that the Dojo just vacated. Also saw a sign that said Suzi's is (re)opening on October 13th, a mere 9 months past the projected reopening!

I think they are leasing part of the building to a Sleep Experts store, but are still on track to reopen. A post on their FB page from late July says they "can't wait until they reopen" (https://www.facebook.com/SuzisChinaGrill).

Azul Tequila coming to Dry Creek/2222

I'm not sure how big the South location is, but this location is not very big. They do have a small outdoor patio area, but given that it's in a neighborhood, I doubt there will be live music out there. I'd would love some mariachis - everything is so boring in this neck of the woods!

Azul Tequila coming to Dry Creek/2222

Their website says coming Spring 2014 and I have seen a lot of work the last few days, so there is hope.... I am excited about the interior mex as fajitas and enchiladas surely don't do it for me!

That little spot behind the Shell station has seen a multitude of mediocre places. Has anyone tried their other location down south? Any good? Reviews and menu are average, but I am really hoping for another decent choice in the area! Thx!

Custom-Decorated Cookies?

Looks like Rise & Shine Bakery, now Haley Cakes & Cookies, on 2222 @ Riverplace does custom work. Here are samples and looks like the minimun is only a dozen:

Paleta Cart Rental/Catering

Hi, I'm looking to have a paleta cart at an upcoming summer party. Any idea where or how I can find one? I know Goodpops and Mom and Pops could do it, but I'm looking for more typical Mexican flavors that appeal to kids. Mango Chile or Mijito probably won't cut it with this young crowd (though I'd be in heaven!) The good ol' cart on the street would be great, but I need someone reputable that I can count on showing up at the right time and place. Thanks!

Mesa Grill (near Mesa & Steck) has closed. Not a gourmet food mecca by any means, but it was decent for a neighborhood joint and a solid meal on busy weeknights.

Best Chili In Austin

Max's Wine Dive had a pretty decent bison chili with great flavor and spice, though looking at their menu, it looks like they've changed it up - bison, venison, beef and bacon chili.

Challah Bread

I would try the HEB on Far West with the Kosher Area or the Randall's on Balcones which has a kosher bakery. Central Market and Whole foods carry it as well. Sometimes you can find it at Great Harvest, but I would call them first before heading out. Good luck!

Is Lupe Tortilla Open?

I was there last Thursday and was completely underwhelmed by everything I had. The salsa was mediocre, as were the chicken fajitas in my "taco" salad. There was nary a taste of the dressing that was supposed to come with that salad. I have given them the benefit of the doubt since they weren't officially open, but I was quite taken aback by the steep prices. I really don't think they can command them.

Ladies' Luncheon/Tea

Don't discount the Four Seasons. We had a bridal luncheon there for my sister-in-law and we were in a small private room. I am sure they could do the same for you and provide whatever you would like in terms of food/drink. They even prepared some kid-friendly fare for my daughter! I don't remember the menu since it was over 5 years ago, but I remember we all enjoyed it!

Pomegranate Molasses source in Austin area

I'm pretty sure Central Market sells it as well. One of the classes I took at the cooking school had a recipe that required this ingredient and the chef mentioned they sold it downstairs, I believe by the sodas. Ask them to show you where.

It looks like Blue Baker (http://bluebaker.com/) is coming in next to where Estancia Churrasqueria will be in the Arboretum and Masala Wok will be a new addition at the Shops at Arbor Walk. New life for the Arboretum, more craziness for the Arbor Walk center!

Family oriented restaurants with good food and music?

We've also had success at The Nutty Brown Cafe, just south of the Y at Oak Hill. Nice outdoor area and amphitheater and some kids' nights with child-friendly entertainment.
