Where to buy ramps?
Have anyone seen ramps for sale or is it too late? I've looked at the Takoma Farmers Market as well as balduccis (which is where i got some last year). Does the dupont farmers market have ramps? or any vendors in eastern market?
Takoma Park dining recommendations
If you want to stay in the downtown area Roscoe's is probably the only place worth going to if you don't live in the neighborhood. Mark's kitchen and the Middle East are both good but not really a destination restaurant. If you want to further a bit out of downtown I really like Samantha's near the intersection of university and piney branch.
Rib Pit on 14th Street?
shellicopter, judging by your profile it sounds like you moved here from boston? If so we did the same a few years ago and live a bit north of petworth in brightwood. I don't want to be uber negative but one thing that dc doesn't do very well is great execution and mid price restaurants. Not exactly sure why but more often than not I leave disappointed. There are a few places that I'm never disappointed at though. One is Dino in Cleveland Park. Always happy there. Also, right in northern columbia heights is Taco Districto Federal. Really good. If you have a car definitely check out some of the ethnic restaurants in Wheaton and Langley Park. Two of my favorites are Ruan Thai for Thai in Wheaton and Tiffin in Langely Park for indian. Out of the way but for me worth the drive. And enjoy that DC has happy hours. Drink enough and it'll be all good.
Where is awesome BACON in Washington DC?
I haven't had it in a few years and don't know if it's still on the menu but the Black Squirrel had an awesome BLT. Very good bacon.
aji dulce in MD?
I want to make sofrito tomorrow night and I'm having a heck of a time trying to find fresh aji dulce. I've tried the bestway in takoma park, a few small latino markets and the H-Mart in Wheaton to no avail. Any other suggestions?
Where can one find Queso Chihuahua in the greater D.C. area?
I think the beltway in takoma park on piney branch carries it
Silver Spring
i'm a fan of 8407. not everything there is perfect but they have a lot of options at different prices. the simpler the better usually.
James River Barbecue sauce?
Has anyone seen this sauce in a grocery store in the NW DC/Silver Spring area? Now that my beloved Patriots are in the super bowl I want to recreate the iconic new england roast beef sandwich and apparently this is the sauce all the joints use. I can get it on amazon but i'd have to buy a pack of 4 which i'd rather not do.
Good mid-priced French, Italian or Mediterranean Restos from Bethesda to Upper NW
dino would be a great pic for an italian restaurant. cleveland park is very easy to get around and not far at all from CC
Christmas in Salem?
Hi all,
I miss living in Boston/Cambridge. 3 years away in DC is just not the same. My wife and I and our 3 month old son are traveling to Salem to spend X-mas with my mother. In lieu of cooking Christmas Brunch for our small family I thought it would be easier just to go out for brunch/lunch since we'll be seeing extended family later on at night. Have any places advertised Christmas brunch? Back in the day we did the Hawthorne Hotel a few times but I was wondering if there was someplace better. Thanks!
Ray's Steak and Cheese
Steak tips are amazing. As are the roast beef sandwiches on the north shore I'm heading back to the homeland on Friday and my first stop will be Nick's in Beverly.
Ray's Steak and Cheese
Unless you got a steak bomb! Having grown up in boston but spending 6 years in Philadelphia I can definitely appreciate both.
Hazelnuts!
You can also go to http://www.superiornutstore.com/ They're mostly a mail order business but they do have a small retail shop in cambridge. I've gotten hazelnuts there before and I've been happy.
stores w/ Scharffen Berger chunks or Guittard wafers?
Whole foods carries bars of scharffen Berger but not chunks
How is this list for DC Trip
your silver spring recs are good though i may also swap out jackie's for cubanos. cubanos is good but not amazing. jackie's is better though in the same vein as 8407 so not sure if you want to try different ethnic food or not.
Where can I buy lard near Silver Spring, Maryland?

El Centro DF?
I'm going to El Centro DF tonight. I know it's gotten mixed reviews but are there any dishes I should make sure to order?

PJ Clarkes -- K Street Now Open
Sorry for the reply to an old thread but went to dinner there tonight (Mother is in town and seemed like a safe bet) and it was really bad. I really don't think anything was made in house. The caesar salad was clearly out of a bag. The calimari were cut in large chunks, something i've never seen before. I assume cut and frozen. I got the French Dip Sandwich. The beef was ok but the "jus" was clearly their french onion soup. I assume this means that the beef was not roasted in house so they had no cooking jus. And while not terribly expensive it was not worth the price at all. I mean, almost 14.00 for the french dip sandwich served with stale chips? Not so much. Service was good though, so that was nice.
Jaded California food snob seeks like-minded fusspots to recommend good DC restaurants
I hate to also be an ahole but i kind of agree. it's taken me a while to find some places i like in the DC area. A few places I like in DC are Dino for rustic Italian and Againn for scottish. In the Md burbs I really like Tiffin for Indian and 8407 kitchen and bar in downtown silver spring for new american.
Help me please my parents!
definitely dino. it's great food at great prices and parents will love cleveland park

Wine pairings at Komi
My wife and I had an unbelievable dinner at Komi last night. One of the top meals of my life. Every bite was perfection. My one gripe is with the wine pairing. When I asked my server to describe the pairings she said that it was 5 glasses of wine. I was excited to try a variety of wines with the courses so I ordered the pairing. The first wine was a great sparkling greek wine and was definitely a full glass. However, after that I was barely poured 1.5 ounces at most of the other four wines and literally a splash of beer. While each wine was amazing it was definitely not worth the 70 dollar cost. I wish that the server told me that the 5 glasses were really half glasses at most. I didn't say anything because the night was so enjoyable and my wife wasn't drinking so I didn't want her to think I was just trying to get drunk. Has anyone had a similar experience or was it just me? I happened to notice that other tables were getting fuller pours so maybe it was just my server?

Food books that changed your life...
In the past year I'd have to say Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc at Home has completely changed the way I cook. All his hints have made my food so much better with a much more complex flavor profile.
Great meal at 8407 Kitchen and Bar
I finally tried 8407 Kitchen and Bar last night and really enjoyed it. The ambiance was great and was just what we were looking for in a neighborhood restaurant close to downtown silver spring. We started with the fried calimari, and two salads the spinach salad with a great feta and the duck proscuitto salad. All excellant. For the mains we had the cuban sandwich, gnocchi, crab cake and the tagliatelle. The only weak spot was the cuban sandwich which lacked flavor but the french fries served with it definitely made up for the sandwich. Prices were decent and service was good. Overall a good experience
