Mexican Restaurant with Mariachi Band?

No. Mama is closed, all three of them it seems. As our search went unrewarded, we deccided to take the family to our house at the Jersey Shore and go to a restaurant down there.

Mexican Restaurant with Mariachi Band?

Thanks. Will look into it.

Mexican Restaurant with Mariachi Band?

Our daughter-in-law is graduating college and her mother is visiting from Central America and we want to celebrate at a Mexican Restaurant with a mariachi Band. Food must also be good.

Other suggestions for places with good food and live music would be welcome. I don'teat seafood, so, please no places that specialize in food from the sea.

TIA

Offering the chef a glass of wine

Well, if $50 is common .
Well, two buck Chuck it isn't but.....I can't see a conga line of employees heading to my table to taste my Chateau de NoName Pinot Noir!

Offering the chef a glass of wine

True about the list. I brought a bottle of expensive wine, well, expensive for me, (not the P '82), only once to a restaurant. Their policy is; "It cannot be on our wine list."

My point was why would a chef, or other employee want to taste a (pardon the expression) common wine?

Offering the chef a glass of wine

Ocean County, NJ, where we have a home has some weird liquor laws so most of the places we dine at are BYO. I have never thought of offering the chef or waiter a glass of wine. I am curious, why? I've read that if you bring a very expensive (Petrus '82?!!) to a very expensive restaurant that has a corkage policy, you should offer the wine server a taste. But my $50.00 bottle of Gigondas? I think not. Interesting question, tho.

Where should I buy wine online?

I buy almost 95% of my wines from WTSO. Not only are the prices great, in addition to no tax to NYS or shipping, but they donate a case of good mixed wines to my charity auction. Nice people.

Rao's?

Is there a bar you can have a drink? Or, perhaps a bowl of pasta?

Good Chinese 1st, 2nd or 3rd Ave. 14th - 60th?

Thanks. I'll try the Peking Duck House one night. Cafe China another.

I appreciate your responding.

Good Chinese 1st, 2nd or 3rd Ave. 14th - 60th?

I will be visiting my wife in The hospital for Joint Diseases from Wed. - Sat. or Sun. After I will walk up one of those Avenues to the Roosevelt Island tram and would like to have a nice Chinese meal along the way. Grand Sichun on 2nd and 56th I am familiar with. The resturant can be Cantonese, Sichun, or Hunan, or anything as long as it's good and "A" rated.

TIA

Tips on tipping - pleeease [moved from Manhattan board}

on a $40 retail wine you would tip an additional, what $8.00, $10.00?

Tips on tipping - pleeease [moved from Manhattan board}

I WAS refering to NJ as we have a house in Mantoloking (Ocean County) where very few restaurants have licenses and we ONLY dine at BYOs. I didn't realize that they couldn't pour the wine. All places open it and some pour the first glass. Whispers in Spring Lake does pour all meal long as does Daniel's Bistro. But some places don't even pour the first glass. I always thought they were "rude!" :)

Tips on tipping - pleeease [moved from Manhattan board}

One thing that always has puzzled me is do you tip at BYOs if, and only if, the wait staff pours your wine? If so, how much? 5% of the value of the bottle, 5% additional on top your tip?

Soul Fixins' (Chelsea)

I've never been there and won't based on what I've read on another foodie board, yelp. It sounded awful.

Best Mexican Food in NYC

I first went to El Parador back in the '60s when Craig Claiborne turned his readers on to it. I agree about the mole sauce, but the decor is tired and the service is dicey, on some occasions. Spending ten days in Playa del Carmen in February eating Mexicn food every day usually gives me my Mexican food fix for the year.

Favorite NV Champagne?

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Perrier Jouet.

What are your favorite online wine websites? Where do you shop?

I second that. I've been a customer for many years and never disappointed with their shipments. (Caveat: They donate a case of wine to my charity's silent auction.) True, selections are limited and if you "need" a special wine in a hurry, they are not the place to go. For me no shipping costs and no tax (to NYS) also helps. I do "check out" each wine I want to purchase by checking their price v other places via wine searcher and checking out the taster comments.

Great Red Wines for under $30

I didn't read all of the replies, so I don't know if anyone recommended Wines til sold out www.wtso.com. They have some good buys in reds. Free shipping if you meet the minimum order, usually 4 bottles. Also no tax to some states. I've never been disappointed in what I purchased.

What is the best restaurant in Manhattan...with one caveat...

four meat dishes on it's menu.

You missed the point. Four out how many, 12, 15? That's the OP's point. It's not what Bruni likes, it's what's available, and as a non-seafood eater I find my selections minimal. Especially on daily specials. But I am off the topic.

What is the best restaurant in Manhattan...with one caveat...

I (another non-seafood eater) have to agree with the OP. Today's Pete Well's review of Junnsik has his best dishes: "Mushroom with dashi broth; sea urchin; barley in anchovy broth; miyeok; spicy kalguksu; crispy snapper; Arctic char."
And prior Frank Bruni's reviews 75% of his favorite dishes in his reviews were seafood.

Osso Buco Dinner for 2 with Bottle of Wine...only $55

Yes. For the record; we figured the "bottle of wine" would be a real stinker so we brought our own and offered to forsake their wine for ours and they wouldn't do it! Go figure.

Osso Buco Dinner for 2 with Bottle of Wine...only $55

Avoid, avoid, avoid. My wife and I tried it a few months back and it wasn't worth it. The wine is a $10 or less bottle, the service so-so and the food forgettable. The only saving grace was it was early autumn and we sat outside.

Sigiri review: delicious Sri Lankan food in East Village

Thanks, Simon for the rec. I looked at their menu and it sound delish.

Mr. Chow on 57th St...?

If it's Asian food you want and don't mind vegetarian or Korean, you could go to Hangawi on East 32nd Street (5th and Madison).

Zen-like experience. Hint: Wear easy to take off shoes.

Wine Stores with great bottles

It may be too late for you but www.wtso.com always has some great buys on $150+ wines at 40-50% off. Free shipping and no tax to NYS.

Kimchi Specialist?

Does anyone know where I can get kimchi WITHOUT any shrimp or anchovy sauce/paste in it? In other words, vegetarian.

Deninos Pizza new Brick Location

My wife and I have been there three times. Once a 20 minute wait, the other two times no wait. We second the salad review, pass on it. The pizzas are excellent. We've only had the "standard" with garlic and peppers, and extra sauce on one-half (mine).

Since our last visit we've tried three times to get in and won't wait 45 minutes. No pizza is worth it.

A second best goes to the new (?) coal fired place on Arnold Ave. in Point Pleasant. On the subject of Arnold Ave. skip Spanos (sp?). Just awful, over salted food.

Astoria bakery for a birthday cake

Their website states "Custom Cakes available by appointment."

I guess I didn't make an appointment! :)

Ring ring. "Hello, Astor Bake Shop."

Me: "I'd like to make an apointment for a birthdaycake."

ASB: "We have an opening on November4th at 2PM"

Me: "Uh, the party is this weekend."

ASB: "Sorry, that's our first open day."

Me: "????????"

Astoria bakery for a birthday cake

I don't believe Astor makes birthday cakes. I ordered one from la Guli and was very disappointed.

Upscale Mexican birthday dinner

Sadly, I have to agree with you. El Parador was one of my favorites for many years (I started dining there in the early 60s when Craig Claiborne was touting it), and a meal there two years ago was abysmal. Carlos (the original owner) must be spinning in his grave.
