Cupcakes at Target Field
Just figured I would bump this for the OP, I was at the park last night, and I spied a couple of these bakery/espresso spots (including @ 119), and there were cupcakes, individually packaged in little plastic containers. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, so I didn't try one, but they appear to have a healthy (or would that be unhealthy?) ;) amount of frosting.
On an unrelated note: Surlys Bandwagon is fantastic, I *might* even like it better than Furious, which is crazy talk for me. I'm hoping that later in the season they might have both available so I can do it up pepsi challenge style :)
There needs to be more than one surly stand though... I mean, shouldn't that have been obvious, especially when the price is exactly the same for a Surly as it is for a Grain Belt?
16th Street & Bethany Home has come alive! Come see, eat, drink, enjoy!
Can anyone confirm if Richardson's has actually opened? Someone once told me about that place and the awesome green chilies stuffed with potatoes they have there. I am heading to AZ from out of town, going to Sedona (flying into PHX), and was thinking about stopping there for lunch on the way up. Is it true I can still get them at Rokerij? Thanks :)

Melt-Your-Face-Vegetarian
Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! I was thinking of checking out On's myself, glad to hear there are veg options. I shall let him run thru this post and decide what sounds good, and report back
You guys all rock, and I like you :)
Melt-Your-Face-Vegetarian
Hey Hounds!
It has been far too long since I have posted here, I found myself almost putting (MSP) behind my topic, then realized, Hey! I don't need to! :)
Anyway, so I am not veg. At all. I do however have a veg friend coming into town (or back I should say, he lived here 10+ years ago) and I am looking for the places that make veg stuff so good, that a bacon worshiping carnivore such as myself would order it without a second thought of what meat containing dishes I may be passing up. In short, the best things you have eaten in town that are veg friendly.
I should mention that my friend has a very very loose definition of Vegetarian. He eats eggs, dairy, and even fish every now and then (but not shellfish). He is especially fond of Thai food, so I am especially interested in any good Thai veg dishes, but open to hearing about anything. Anywhere in the MSP metro area.
I realize this is pretty broad, I can come up with obvious things like pizza from Punch/Nea, Breakfast is pretty easy too, since he eats eggs, but if you know of something awesome that fits the above, I would love to hear about it. Thanks!
Thanks!!
State Fair MSP
For real! I tried a jerk chicken roti at the fair this year, and it ended up being the best thing I ate there. Spicy, flavorful, utterly craveable. Can you get these things at the restaurant too? Anyway, if you're headed to the fair this weekend and you love spicy food, do yourself a favor and get one! Food building. Also the hot jamacian beef patty from West Indies soul in the bazaar was pretty good. I just took their bottle of jerk sauce and squeezed some on top of the patty right into the little bag it comes in. It made for messy, difficult eating, but I think the sauce really made it even better.

I tried that shrimp cocktail, though it was a few years back. You get what you pay for. Shrimp were tiny, not deveined, and mushy. Avoid, your instincts are correct.

I took my chowpup here for lunch. We went at an "off-time" on purpose, as he has multiple allergies/food intolerances. One of the owners, Holly, was very helpful in assisting us with navigating the menu for gluten-free options (not as many as you might think) as soy sauce is used in many of the noodle dishes, so even the pad thai is not an option for him.
We started with a deep-fried tofu starter. I liked it quite a bit, especially the sauce, which was totally addictive, sweet and tangy, pefectly balanced. For entrees, I had the Pad Thai, which came with chicken at lunchtime (listed on menu as shrimp, with chicken optional at a lower cost). It was a good version of Pad thai, not the overly sweet, gloppy ketchup like version that is often served around the cities. That being said, it seemed like it was missing something, some tang, or brightness that I usually associate with the dish. I much preferred my son's entree of pad prik, which had the brightness that I was missing in my Pad Thai, along with some curry spices and a mild amount of heat. He gobbled down the majority of it. Unfortunately, the curries of the day are only offered at dinnertime, because I really wanted to try one - I am sure we will go back for dinner, though.
The restaurant itself was decorated nicely, had a good neighboorhood vibe, family friendly.
The only issue I had was that there was a stong chemical odor permeating the place the day we went - The owner seemed very apologetic about it and mentioned that a new roof was being put on the building. I haven't noticed anyone else mentioning it, so maybe it has settled down a bit?
Overall, a good addition to the neighbohood, and we will be back!
Arthur Treatcher-style Fish? (MSP)
Not sure How you are planning to get there, but if you take snelling north, it splits off on the right just after you make the turn where it turns into 694. So if you take 35E to 694W, just watch for it around the snelling exit. The signs say Anoka on them IIRC. The Taco Bell/LJS is on the right, just atter you cross above 35W. There are now 2 "HWY 10's", so I can see how an internet map could get confused. The LJS is off the "old Hwy 10" I also do not recall any old country buffet around there, unless it was just recently built.
*re:Northtown - that is the right Hwy 10, LJS is about 1 mile east (closer to St. Paul), as I stated above, it will be on the right hand side just after you cross above 35W, it's up on a hill.
Neptune Cafe Italiana - Blaine, MN
Interesting. I've never heard of this place, looks like it has sprung up more recently with all the new development up this way, but what I saw on the website really grabbed my attention:
Considered "Blaine's Hidden Dining Secret" by the locals, this chef-driven gem headed by Bryan Feist, formerly of Goodfellows, California Cafe, Ciao Bella and the D'Amico Family of Restaurants, offers up inspired Italian cuisine with a notable wine list to complement it
Could it be that there will finally be a restaurant up in the northern suburbs that is worth the drive up there?
Curious to hear a report back on this, as we used to live in that area and still have friends up that way that we visit occasionally.
MSP-Hot Sauce stores
If you can handle heading out to the Maul of America (or happen to be stuck there for some reason), there is a specialty store for this sort of thing on level 3 somewhere. Not sure what it is called. Don't know if they carry the brand you are loking for.
*Edit* - I looked around a little to figure out the name of this place, and it would seem that it has closed down a couple of years ago. I don't go down to the mall much.
MSP: The Fall of Saigon
I was eating lunch there just yesterday - Bahn Mi was great, as usual. Noticed that they had a sign up by the register announcing they would be moving in Nov. to the following address: 704 University Ave. West. I paid attention on my way home, and that is the storefront where Thai Bazil was located. So Saigon has their new home, and hopefully some of the original poster's concerns will be addressed once they move into their new digs. My thought is not that Saigon is struggling - they are busier than ever. (And just check out the Hummers and Escalades parked directly behind the building), but with their uncertain future, and with the economy being what it is right now, of course prices need to be increased. I can also understand placing a minimum on credit card orders, as that is a huge, huge cost to a small business. But as to the cleanliness, run down shop, well, if they knew they were leaving, and the place was being torn down, I am sure they were not planning on spending a lot of time or money to keep it fixed up. Hopefully they will have a more secure feeling in their new place, and that will be reflected in how they take care of it and run it.
2008 MN State Fair
I think she means the Nitro ice-cream stand (uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the ice cream), In the food building.
MSP-Minnesota Renaissance Festival
I bought this really great Foccacia Bread there once, many (about 10-15) years ago. I believe that it was just being sold by an independent person/baker, I actually don't even remember it being in a stall. It was warm and fresh when I bought it, and had incredible flavor. I liked it so much, I bought a second bagged up one to bring home for later. When I went back the following years, I never could find it again. So if anyone sees anyone hawking foccacia bread there, please post.
I have often been fond of the soup/stew in a breadbowl, if it happens to be a crisp or drizzly fall day.
Big Fat Bacon (MSP)
I stand corrected. The Preferred Pickle is in the food building, doing up deep fried pickles. The stand I mentioned above is called The Pickle Dog, and it is indeed where you can get the fire dog. This Fire Dog looks like another new food that didn't make the Fairs New Foods list. Street corner for the Pickle Dog is Ligget & Carnes.
Big Fat Bacon (MSP)
Maybe at the preferred Pickle Stand? They sell the original pickle dog (same thing as the fire dog, except dill rather than jalepeno marinated pickle). Their stand looks like a pickle and is on a corner across from the main Midway, next to all of those places that serve beer with thier food (sorry bad at names & streets when it comes to the fair)
2008 MN State Fair
I can always find a way to regroup the cost of the book. But I have a kid. I paid $4.00 for the book buying it early at Cub. There is a coupon for $6.00 off a sheet of tickets for the midway. I will get all my $ back, plus save two dollars just from that one coupon, everything else is gravy. Your mileage may vary.
2008 MN State Fair
OOOOH - second the Fried green tomatoes!! They became my new favorite after trying them for the 1st time last year, I was sad I had waited so long to try them. The Corn fritters sold there were not that special in and of themselves, more useful as a delivery tool for the incredible honey butter served with them.
I also love the fried pickles. I know of a lot of people that don't though.
2008 MN State Fair
The West Indies Booth was in the food building, for sure...you are not losing your mind.
Apparently the Bazaar has been redesigned, I saw on the Fair website that they are having a "grand opening" on Thursday. Hopefully they made it easier to get around in there on crowded days. I mean, before if you had a stroller or were wheelchair bound, you were pretty much SOL.
So it looks like they have done a little rearranging as to where certain booths ended up.
Hyderabad house minneapolis - Closed? Changing?
Oh dear, well this is dissapointing. The new signage is up for Bilal's. It claims to have the "best taste in Afghani and South Asian cusine". Not really sure what to make of that.
[MSP] All foods at the State Fair (more or less)
Just wanted to add a link to the thread I started for 2008, with the new foods listed so far for this year. The list Anne compiled in 2006 still has a ton of great info, but this link will update you with some of the new stuff for 2008!

MSP - Pham on East Lake rumors...
Alexis (aka Girl Friday) seems to be pretty chummy with Thom Pham from what I've read on the interweb, so I would be inclined to believe what she has to say. I know a guy that works for Thom, if i get the chance, I'll see if he knows anyhting.
Hyderabad house minneapolis - Closed? Changing?
Okay, I took a closer look this evening when I drove by again. The sign does not say Biryani's, but rather Bilal's (apparently I just really wanted the place to stay Indian) and there are all sorts of Halal signs hanging up in the windows, which makes me think the place opening up here is possibly going to be catering to the Somali/Muslim community. Perhaps the new Hyderabad house is planning to move into the building next door, where the new Holy Land bakery will be opening soon? I do hope it reopens somewhere. I wonder what the plans are for the now defunct Burger King site too. Hmmm....
Hyderabad house minneapolis - Closed? Changing?
Today I was driving home from dropping my son off at school and as I approached 18th and Central, noted that the sinage was off the Hyderabad House restaurant that is attached to the Patel's, prompting me to take a closer look as I drove past. In the window, I noted a handwritten sign on a piece of tagboard: Coming soon, Biryani's (or something like that).
Anyone have any scoop? Is this a totally new place? Are they just changing the name? If I recall correctly, it seems that Biryani is a dish of the Hyderabad region, so I am hoping that this is just a name change or something along those lines. I believe that the restaurant is being run by the same people that own Patel's, so it seems strange that they would close it or sell it to someone else. I don't think I will have time this afternoon to stop in and ask them about it. Anyway, I am going to be so bummed if this place changes much, because it sounded like they had a great lunch buffet that I was looking forward to trying.

first sonic in minnesota, what the..?
If you're all about supporting "little drive ins", then may I make a suggestion? Go to the Dariette Drive-in (close to this Sonic) in St. Paul or If over near Minneapolis, the Wagner Drive in, located in St. Louis Park. These are the local, family-owned "little drive in's" that need your support. (I'm guessing that a national corp. chain like Sonic is doing OK). Oh yeah, the food is waaay better at both of them too. If you must, stop into Sonic for your slushy drink and chewable ice afterward.
