Cape Coral FL to NJ Shore...where should I eat?

My DH is moving his sister from Cape Coral FL back home to the Jersey Shore. He will mostly be traveling along I-95.

Where can he stop along the way to get some of the best regional cuisine?

Road side stands to nice restaurants are welcome! Oh and make sure breakfast is included! :)

Thanks in advance!

Peeps Cuisine--Any recipes?

Saw this in Taste of Home magazine and been dying to make it.... standard yellow cake layer, covered in chocolate icing, yellow peeps around the edge and chocolate chips in the middle...I looks like a giant sunflower!

food sayings

My grandfather used to say this "prayer" before dinner:

"The Father, Son and Holy Ghost..
..Who ever eats the fastest, gets the most"

Sitting around a dinner table of 13, I think my brothers took this to heart!

Homemade food related gifts - for office

Every year I bake TONS of Christmas cookies and candies and always give them as gifts to co-workers and other collegues. I even have had my kids make chocolate covered pretzel rods decorated with sprinkles to give to their wide group of friends.

Like I tell them "everyone likes food!".

This year I am using the Chinese take-out box look for the "wow" factor.

Do I want to say "Yes" to a wild turkey offer?

I don't care for 'gamey' protiens like venison, but I have eaten a few wild turkeys and they don't have that same gamey taste. But as stated above, they are less meaty, kind of dry and rather stringy. My dad has a smokehouse and the smoke flavor is a great improvement on the taste.

Eating Potatoes Raw

Everytime I peel them to cook I eat at least 1/2 of one! I love them.

Is this cooking?

If you start going down that path....then is it 'cooking" if you don't blend your own spices and grind your own flour?

Where do you draw the line?

IMO she used the soup as a base .... just like you would use a boxed stock.

What do I need to know about rendering my own lard from pork fat?

It smells really bad!
My mother has been rendering lard from home grown hogs forever.....I can't stand to be in the house when she is doing it.

What is your favorite kind of old fashioned cake?

My grandma always made a deep dark chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting

Holloween themed food

I made Emeril's "brain cookies" once.....Basically you use regular sugar cookie dough that you color to a gray-green-purple kind of color with food coloring, then squish it through a potato ricer (the biggest holes) into cookie size portions. Bake as usual. Then drizzle with some red gel icing for the blood effect.

Another thing my kids always ask for is "Hand Punch".... it's so sad, but it's just hand ice cubes made by pouring kool aid into latex gloves and freezing them . (Close with a rubber band and lay on a cookie sheet in the freezer). Then add them to a punch bowl of Fresca (they love the cloudiness with the hands floating up and down!)

Just moved Atlantic Highlands/Middletown area

Welcome!! I also live in the Atl. Highlands/Middletown border (in Navesink actually) and I suggest that you try everywhere in Atlantic Highlands and Highlands.
Julia's, Copper Canyon, and Harborside Grill in Atlantic Highlands are good (I just haven't tried all the other's yet :) )
Neil's, Windansea, Inlet Cafe, Off the Hook, and the Sugar Sack are all good in Highlands.....

Explore and report back!

PS The cheesesteaks at Ciao Bellas on 36 on the way to Highlnads, in the Quick Check plaza are to die for!

The odd cravings and dislikes of a pregnant woman [Moved from General Topics board]

With my first daughter, I craved spaghetti O's and grilled cheese sandwiches. I couldn't stand melted cheese on pizza (the delivery guy would always confirm that it was a pepperoni pizza, half no cheese!)

With my second daughter, I couldn't stand cake.... any kind of cake just sounded repulsive to me.

That was 13 years ago and everything went back to normal

Let's say I have grapevines and want to use the leaves...

My dad makes a great crock pickle with layers of grape leaves. It gives the pickles an effervesent quality. It actually works the best with those end of the season huge pickles

Red Beans - Slow Cooker

Anyone out there have a good red beans (think red beans and rice) recipe for a slow cooker?

My favorite resturant that made them has closed down and I've been dying for some!

I like them to be the nice large kidney type beans that aren't mushed up like refried beans, but are left whole with lots of flavor.

I've never made them in my life, but I'm not afraid to start with dried beans...

Thanks for the help!

Drinks for BBQ - besides beer...

It's very simplistic, but I've made this for a few summer parties and people love it...get a bottle of tropical blue pucker and some sprite. Mix 1 part pucker to 2 parts sprite with lots of ice....enjoy!

Neil's original Oyster i Highlands!

tasty treats for 50+ people! ( not too $$$ )

Taco Salad!
Romaine lettuce
1 can chick peas, drained
1 can red kidney beans, drained
1 red pepper, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
tomatoes, cherry or grape
1 med onion, chopped
1 lb ground beef prepared with standard taco seasoning then cooled
1 bag shredded cheese
1 bag doritos nacho chips broken up
1 bottle catalina french dressing (trust me!)

I usually cut everything up an bring it to the event and assemble it at the place. Sometimes I even prepare everything a couple of days ahead and then put the chips and dressing on at the last minute.
Make 2 if you are the only one bringing salad. Some people actually like it the next day when everything is soggy and the flavors all meld.

You might see some signs for Quaker Steak and Lube....it's a local chain, but fun. The original is in Sharon PA, just outside of Ohio and there is one just off interstate 80 in Bloomsburg.....
