Breakfast in Hebei

Does anyone have any expertise on what people in Hebei province in China tend to eat for breakfast, particularly in the way of rice porridge? I have a newly-adopted niece and nephew who grew up in Hebei until ages 10/12 and they're coming to visit us. I've heard they used to eat rice porridge in their orphanage, and they like it. I would like to cook something like that for them, but with so many different types of congee/jook, I'm wondering what type they might most appreciate.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts!

Anyone know if/how Elias' market has changed since it was Pichel's?

I never went to Pichel's, but Elias Market is middle eastern, mainly. With some latin food too. I saw all kinds of fresh meats, but for scrapple or other organ based meat producst (really?!) I'd go to the Allentown farmer's market.

Favorite restaurants in the Lehigh Valley, PA

I grew up in the Lehigh Valley and have since lived in NYC and SF. I'm back in the Lehigh Valley now and food here is nowhere near as good as any major city, but there are a few bright spots. My favorite place ever is Bolete. It's near perfection, but it's definitely fine dining with prices to match. I also really like Spice India near the mall, Soumaya & Sons in Whitehall for Middle Eastern, and Thai Thai II on Main St. in Bethlehem. Dolce Patisserie in Hellertown is as good a bakery as you'll find anywhere.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants in Park the Winter

Hey all. My boyfriend and I are former Brooklynites who are coming back for a visit tomorrow and bringing our small dog. We're spending Thursday walking around our old neighborhoods--Park Slope mostly, but also Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill—and I'm worried we're going to have to stand out in the cold eating because we can't bring the dog anywhere.

In the summer, plenty of restaurants have outdoor seating, but what about this time of year? Does anyone know of outdoor seating now with heat lamps and awnings? And what about cafes or bars? Know of any places that won't kick us out? The dog is quite small and mostly hidden in a bag.

Any help would be mucho appreciated. Thanks!!

Papalote-Inspired Salsa

Wow. Wow wow wow. I polished off a jar of Papalote salsa yesterday and made this today. It wasn't 100% the same color--maybe because I didn't blend it smooth enough or should add more pepitas--but the flavor was very, very close and it was delicious in its own right. Easy to make too. Thanks, Max La Rivere-Hedrick!

Indian Quinoa Salad

This salad is thoroughly not bad and very healthy. My boyfriend loved it. It's certainly easy to make. The recipe got cred from me for asking you to toast the quinoa. Some recipes make that optional and it's a mistake. Toasting imparts great flavor. I would agree it's a long way from authentic Indian, but it's good in its own right.

Cauliflower-Parsnip Soup with Beet Crisps

This soup is fantaaaastic. Just absolutely delicious and easy to make. I made it for Valentine's Day and cut the beet chips into hearts. You could cut them into any shape though. Letters might be fun.
