The CHEW

Too loud, no focus, Oz is a bad fit. If they keep the gadget segment, and give some food and kitchen equipment testing, I would give it a try, Carla might settle down, I can only guess that the director asked for lots of energy. He got it.

Kindle and Cookbooks

I would love to have a cookbook on my Kindle. Which cookbooks would you recomend for an intermediate home cook, who likes uncomplicated but tasty meals. I like American food and Italian and French. Not big on desserts or sweets. TY

Jiff versus Skippy (and more) Marriage, how common?

When my husband and I started staging taste-tests to convince each other that we really couln't tell the difference between our so-called favorite brands, it was just for fun. Now its just crazy how stubborn we are about these foods.WE don't just prefer our brand we detest the other.
I love Jiff he loves Skippy
Pepsi vs Coke
Pregresso soup vs Campbells
Frenches mustard vs Guldons
Barilla pasta vs Ronzoni
Tuttorosso tomatoes vs Cento
Bumble Bee in oil vs Chicken of the Sea
Temptee Whipped vs Philidelphia regular in silver box (never the tub)
Dunkin Dark vs Eight O Clock regular coffee
Aunt Jemima vs Bisquick Mix for pancakes
There is more, but what brought this up today was my new favorite Dukes Mayonaise over Hellmans. Living in Florida now, I just tasted Dukes, and it was tangy and my coleslaw tasted so much better with it. Of course MR. Hellmans thinks I have gone over the edge.

BONES IN SLOW COOKER

I am new to slow cooking, so far I have made stew and soup. I would love to make chicken cacciatore. I would prefer whole chicken, bone in. Most receipies I have found call for boneless chicken. Is that the only way?

Electric stove vs. cast iron

I always used my much loved cast iron pans until I moved to a Florida condo. Gas stove cooking was the only way I knew. Can I use cast iron on electric? It just doesn't seem like you could control the heat as well. Ready to take your advise.

How do you get a nice black patina on a cast iron skillet by seasoning?

Honestly I didn't develop a reliable patina for years. I mean a patina that never goes away, and show dry spots. In the past I made southern fried chicken often and left the pan in an my cold oven to cool off, and cleaned it with dry paper towels until amost clean and then a damp cloth till all clean. I have a 25 year old pan that looks like black marble. Its my favorite for pancakes.

CONDO OK ELECTRIC GRILL

Condo living is wonderful but for one thing. No gas or charcoal grills allowed. After years of grilling steakes and burgers, fish and chicken I am missing that outdoor cooking experience.I have a great terrace space, but what to buy? I do a good job indoors with a hot cast iron pan, but the smoke and after odor , yuk. Help!!! I would like to keep under $150. All suggestions appreciated.

Debbie Meyer Green Bags for produce - Any Good? [Moved from General Topics]

Any produce in a bag will rot.
Produce should be washed, dried, wrapped in a paper towel and placed in fridge. Just don't forget that its there!
Never put produce in a bag!!!!!

Nesselrode pie?

Or is its Nestelrode pie. I remember my parents loving this pie in the sixties, and haven't
seen one since. I would love to make one, just to re-visit those memories. All I can recall is that is seemed high like a lemon merangue, but with colorful bits in it. Thanks in advance.

GREEN BAGS TO PRESERVE FRESHNESS : DO THEY REALLY WORK?

I hate to repeat myself, but produce should never be in any bag ever. If you shop once a week, and keep things like parsley in paper towels, onions and potatoes in a dry dark spot in baskets, and fruit and veggies in crisper drawers in frige, you will have not spoilage. Dad was a produce man so I learned this at the source.
