Recommendations around Breaux Bridge/New Iberia/Abbeville ?
OK I'll wade in. I've never had a bad meal at Cafe des Amis in Breaux Bridge. In New Iberia I like the crawfish at Guiding Star the best. R & M boiling point also good. I like Bon Creole in N.I. for po boys and the like. As stated earlier, best crawfish in the Abbeville area is at Cajun Claws. I think Richard's is a close second. Good crawfish at John's Seafood Patio in Erath. I'll second the oysters at DuPuy's and Shucks in Abbeville. Ponce had some nice recs for boudin. I can't help but repat myself in these threads and say that IMHO Hawk's has the best crawfish in Acadiana. Bit of a drive from Lafayette but very worth it. I've been going to Hawk's for years and I have to give props to Cajun Claws for being almost as good as Hawk's. The best way to check would be to try an order at CC's (get there at 4:30-5) and then after a nice ride thru the country try an order at Hawk's. Oh my.
Take-out in Chinatown-switch from New Shanghai?
Well, I want to thank you all for your replies. I ended up getting take-out from two spots. I stop in at Taiwan Cafe but they were closed for renovations. The owner seemed like a nice guy and recommended we try his other spot on Washington St. but since the Gourmet Dumpling Sop was around the corner and I'd never eaten their food, I tried that. Also went back to New Shanghai. I'm still attacking the haul but so far I've really enjoyed the kidney dish from G.D. Shop. Pork buns were a hit as well. The beef tendon form N.Shanghai shown. Also the Sichuan wontons were great as usual. The salt & pepper squid were real good as well. Mala kidney at N.S. also terrific. I should add that I also went to the BBQ place next to New Shanghai (below street level)(sorry I didn't get the name) and was blown away again by their duck and pork. The crispy skin of the pork is amazing! Enough food for a few days. Thx again everyone.
Take-out in Chinatown-switch from New Shanghai?
Thx Niblet. Any more recs out there 'hounds?
Duozo or Haru
Thanks everyone. Douzo it is if we do sushi. Anything else? Breasserie Jo for breakfast on our way out of town.Any more info on the Salty Pig? I'll google it. We might try to get in to Sweet Cheeks even though it would be a cab ride. Any thoughts? Oh yes, I really like breakfast at the Trident Bookstore (great brisket hash) on Newbury St. Can we do better? Thanks you guys.
Duozo or Haru
Looking for a walk-to meal from the Colonade Hotel on Huntington Ave., Back Bay. We've been to Duizo and liked it very much. How does Haru compare? Other recs? Summer Shack is a possibility (been there). What do you think 'hounds? Thanks so much. It would be Dad and his not too adventurous 13 yr. old.
Take-out in Chinatown-switch from New Shanghai?
I'll be getting some take-out in Chinatown in a few days. My usual go to spot is New Shanghai. I have enjoyed much of the food from there over the years. My question is whether I should branch out to another resto. I've liked Sichuan, Shanghai, Hong Kong and a few other cuisines. If it matters, we won't get to the food for six hours or so. Fried food doesn't make it obviously. Specific food as well as any reataurants would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, hounds.
Good eats in Texarkana, TX
I've got three spots for you to check out. I've not been to any of them however. Big Jake's Smokehouse for BBQ. Bryce's Cafeteria for fried chicken and chicken fried steaks. And Cattleman's Steakhouse.
What discontinued products do you miss?
Liederkranz Cheese from Borden. Heard the factory burned down in the 80s. McSorley's Ale House in NYC used to serve it w/ Saltines, raw onion and hot mustard. Man, that was good. A true stinky cheese. Buy it and leave it on the top of the refridgerator for about a week. Gooey and smelly. My second one is a bit embarassing, but we all have our little loves, don't we? Betty Crocker Noodles Romanoff. Come home after a few adult beverages, add a few frozen shrimp and I was a happy cowboy. Where did it go?
North Carolina BBQ TOUR
Qball- Looks like a great list. I might just add that if you're going all the way to Shelby, you might as well hit Alston Bridges on E. Grover St. as well. It's only 5 min. into town from Bridge's BBQ Lodge and well worth it for a comparison. Alston is a Stamey protege and he's been here since 1956. Just sayin'. Have a great trip!
North Carolina BBQ TOUR
Maybe I should add that I hit Parker's about 9:30. Got to B's around 11AM to avoid the inevitable crowd. After finishing with Wiber's, I think I got back to I-95 going S about 3-3:30 or so.Ate at Parker's (skip it) Ate at B's in my car. Take-out from Bum's but ate in my car in their parking lot. Weird, I know. Take-out at Skylight, Ate in at Grady's. Take-out at Wilber's. Last year, after breakfast at Fuzzy's, all stops were take-out. Enjoy
North Carolina BBQ TOUR
Here's two days of hard core touring I did in the past three years:Early October a loop from N-South off I-95.1) Parker's in Wilson. Saw no wood pile.Didn't care for the 'Q. 2) B's in Greenville.Excellent 'Q and chicken. 3) Bum's in Ayden. Real good bbq and f. chicken. 4) Skylight Inn in Ayden. Excellent s'wich. 5) Grady's in Dudley. Maybe my fave bbq of the day. 6) Wilbers in Goldsboro. Very good but I was pretty porked out by this time. Although that didn't stop me from going to Sweatman's in Holly Hill, SC for some very fine SC "Q. Intense bbq day. On a day last spring I got to hit some fine joints more to the West: 1) Fuzzy's in Madison for breakfast and a small taste of their bbq. Really, really good. 2) Stamey's in Greensboro. Not the one by the Colisseum. OK not great. 3) Cook's S of Lexington. Excellent s'wich. 4) Back Country in Linwood. Real fine 'q and hushpuppies..Then down to Shelby to sample both Bridges stops. Both excellent. Been to Jim's, Barbecue Center and Lexington #1 on other occasions. Lexington #1 my fave. BBQ center also v. good. Of the ones from your list that I've tried I'd say most definitely Lexington #1,BBQ Center and Cook's in Lexington, Wilber's and Grady's. And for sure B's, Bum's and Skylight Inn are all top flight. Sounds like a great marathon. Report back please.
Gautreau's?
Here's a very favorable rec for Gautreau's. As an out-of-towner, I find it refreshing not to be surrounded by tourists. The food (through the last three chefs) has been consistently good, if not great. Patrick IMHO remains one of the very best hosts in the city. I'm also a fan of their Sazerac.I highly recommend Gautreau's.
Why does everyone hate Jacques-imo's
Eating at Jacques-Imo's is a fun dining experience. Comparing it to Emeril's is absurd. The food compares very favorably to many NOLA neighborhood joints.

Five Guys Burgers coming to Station Landing in Medford
I stopped in Winchester, VA for my first Five Guys cheeseburger and fries. The burger was
good in the griddled/greasy variety. The "cajun fries" were terrible. Poorly spiced and mushy. Not crispy at all. Overall I'd go back if I'm in the mood for a fast food chowdown and I'm on the road and need food near the Interstate. Just sayin'...
Cheesesteak jones!
I'm looking for your fave cheesesteak spot in the Philly 'burbs near the NJ Turnpike. Five miles from the Pike is fine. Any ideas? Thanks much
Cheesesteak jones!
I'll add this to the Jersey board as well, but...I need a good spot for a cheesesteak in the Philly area but close to the NJ Turnpike. Within 5 miles of the Turnpike is fine. Thanks much.
Archibald's Bar-B-Que
Last visit was one year ago. Outstanding as always. I would think they'd be open for lunch. Always have been for me. Call to check (205) 345-6861. Closed Monday
Need help for Montgomery, Alabama
Hi 'hounds - I need some recs for a Monday evening near/in Montgomery. I'm looking for local fare:meat and threes, BBQ, soul food, etc.. Already on my radar are Martin's Restaurant, Isaiah's Rest. and Martha's Place. BBQ: Dreamland (been to the original but now I prefer Archibald's in Northport), Sam's?, Sophia's?
I'd like to keep it near the Interstate from Mobile. Downtown is fine. Any ideas?
Thanks 'hounds, Rockbound

Somewhere near the Interstate coming from Mobile would be nice. Downtown is fine. Already on my radar are Isaiah's Restaurant, Martin's Restaurant and Martha's Place. Can I do better? BBQ - Dreamland?, Sam's?, Sophia's?
Anything else? Thanks 'hounds
Breakfast in Lafayette,LA
Hazelhurst- I know what you mean. I'm usually too concerned with the rest of the day's boudin, cajun food and crawfish searches to think about breakfast. This time I'll need the breakfast stop before taking a friend back to the Airport in NOLA. I suppose the breakfast doesn't have to be in Lafayette. Could be anywhere between there and the Airport. Either side of the river would do.
Breakfast in Lafayette,LA
Hey 'hounds- What are your fave breakfast spots in Lafayette? I'm a fan of Dwyer's Cafe. but I'm looking to expand my breakfast options. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.
SC bbq: McCabe's or D&H?
On an intense BBQ tour last year, McCabe's stood tall. That same day I ate at Sweatman's,Grady's (Dudley,NC) and Wilber's in Goldsboro. McCabe's held its own. A really good and smokey sandwich. I agree with Sue both on her Maurice's comment and the reliability of Littleman's cut and paste review system. Definitely give McCabe's a try and tell us what you think.
Jazz Fest Food Recommendations at Fair Grounds
Welcome back to Jazzfest. Here's what still slays me at the Fairgrounds:
Bacquet's trout w/ crab
Duck and Pheasant Gumbo (Prejeans)
Natchadoches meat pies
Shrimp + grits
The Galley's soft-shell crab po boy
Crawfish Struedel
As you know there's many more, but these are hard to say no to. Enjoy
The Sad Decline of Dreamland in Tuscaloosa
scrumptiouschef - I'm with you about Dreamland. My go-to is also Archibald's and I can't agree more about Miss Paulette's sauce. I usually get about a half gallon to take home every May when I go thru town. Can't wait.
Oysters/Crawfish (non tourist spots) AWAY from NewOrleans, New Iberia,Lafayette etc
Best crawfish in Acadiana IMHO: Hawk's. Call for hours and direction (or Google) .You won't be disappointed and you may never forget it. Enjoy.
B'ham fried chicken- Max's Deli of Seafood & Chicken Box?
Thanks for your comments. I'm with you curej about trying them both. I'll stop at SCB on the way to NOLA and at MAX's on the return. Thanks again.
B'ham fried chicken- Max's Deli of Seafood & Chicken Box?
I'm looking for Birmingham's finest take-out fried chicken. My search boils it down to a choice between Max's Delicatessen or Seafood & Chicken Box. What are your thoughts? Should I add other places to my search? Thanks ahead 'hounds.

stone crab craving
Hi hounds-Middle of next month I'll be picking up a friend at the Orlando airport.Does anyone know of either a good seafood market or reataurant in the area to take care of my craving for stone crab? I would definitely go anywhere in the greater Orlando area to eat my fave Florida food. Thanks
Fred Plotkin's recent Q&A in the NYTimes with copious restaurant recommendation for all Italy
Thanks for the heads up barber.I used Fred's "Italy for the Gourmet Traveller" as my primary source on a trip twelve years ago and I must say it was the very best (along with "Guide to Cajun Country") guide book I have ever seen. His knowledge is encycopoedic on all matters food (restaurants,markets,etc.).I feel sure a trip to Italy with Fred as the guide would be amazing-and I don't even like opera.A truel great resource. Thanks again barber.
