2014 Restaurant and Food Store OPENINGS!!

Sado Sushi on Eglinton West has a bunch of food photos in the window and an "Opening Soon" sign. No idea if it's re-opening under that name, or if a new business is taking over. With Ken Fong, China House and Tasty gone, I'd kill for a decent chinese place in the 'hood.

Also, Rare in the Eaton Centre food court is out…to be replaced by a Tim Hortons. It also looks like Pita Pure has folded.

I'm not sure if anyone caught this, but it looks like Paul's Tomato Pie on Marlee has closed and is being replaced by Mama's (Caribbean/Jamaican).

2014 Restaurant and Food Store CHANGES and CLOSINGS

Perhaps a bit off the Chowhound track, but Fat Phil's, which had opened on Marlee, has closed. There's a Bailiff's Notice in the window.

If I understood correctly, the owners rebranded as "the 8th deadly sin" towards the end of 2013.

Denny's is opening on Dundas West, between the Eaton Centre and the Longos (sorry, don't have a street address).

Brisket Questions

Next time I'm going to try doing chicago-style italian beef. Meat is fun.

Brisket Questions

I don't think it was overcooked. It was marvellously tender, in fact. II think I just went to slice it too early.

Brisket Questions

In this case i was trying for what I'd consider more Vietnamese flavours (it evolved as I was cooking it). I wound up using cinnamon, star anise, cloves, lemongrass, chili, a bit of brown sugar, soy and bay leaves, in addition to the usual garlic, shallot, onion, celery and carrots.

Brisket Questions

Sliced acainst the grain, per butcher's marks. I did try to slice it while hot with a (sharp) chef's knife, so that could explain it.

best french toast in toronto?

New Yorker Deli on Bay Street South of Bloor. Discussion over.

Brisket Questions

Ok, so I made the brisket last night. Turned out pretty good. Braised for 4 hours (tested it at 3, but it seemed pretty tough). Flavour is great, but when I went to slice it, it fell apart. So, no sandwiches to take to lunch, but I will use it for dinner :) Thanks for all the help.

Brisket Questions

Really? I sear pretty much anything I'm going to braise. I know it doesn't actually seal in juices, but I find it just gives deeper flavour and better texture.

Brisket Questions

Thanks! I prefer dry if I can get it, although since this is my first foray into brisketland, I'm more conscious of price (if it fails I'd rather not throw $50 into the bin).

Brisket Questions

I'm not at an official recipe yet; I'm thinking of something inspired by Pho/Banh Mi sandwiches. Thought I'd add a stick of lemongrass, 1-2 star anise, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 bay leaf, 1/4 c brown sugar (or less; I know many people like their brisket sweet, but i'm more savory). , 3-4 cloves, some dried chili, 1 large onion, 2 shallots, a few cloves of garlic and ginger, a big carrot or two, tomato...

Season brisket liberally w salt and pepper, sear the living heck out of it, then braise w aromatics...I'm looking for it to be subtly flavourful. Not sure if I'll get proportions right but I'll let you know :)

Why is onion soup mix so good?

Brisket Questions

I'm looking to make an asian-style braised beef dish this weekend. I'd like to get dinner for two out of it Sun and Mon, plus through the first part of the week. I'm a healthy eater, my wife is more reasonable. How much meat do I need? 3lbs or so? Also, how much does brisket cost these days?

2014 Restaurant and Food Store CHANGES and CLOSINGS

First! Was walking by Sandwich Box on Bay Street this morning. Bike lock and keypad-combination lock over the front door. No letter indicating they were shut down, but that didn't look promising.

2013 Food and Restaurant CHANGES and CLOSINGS

Little House of Kabobs at Yonge/Dundas

Dragon Boat in Thornhill, and Cafe Cogo (same owners, but it appears there's been a split).

2012 Food and Restaurant CHANGES and CLOSINGS

Gill at Yonge and St. Clair has closed. It's a dumpling shop now.

2012 Food and Restaurant CHANGES and CLOSINGS

Garlic Pepper at Yonge and Wellesley has been vacated, with "For Sale" signs in the window.

Also, Biscotti on Bay Street just North of Wellesley shuttered and turned into "Portobello" overnight. I don't see a huge difference.

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

Granowska's (sp?) the Polish bakery on Roncesvales.

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

Sadly, Richman's Bakery has closed. It's a bad week for independent bakeries in the City of Toronto.

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

Honey's Beestro at Avenue and Lawrence has closed.

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

Looks like the Southside Grill in Forest Hill Village is finished. Overpriced, even by neighborhood standards. I don't think that it ever found it's niche.

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

Chimichanga in Yorkville has bitten the dust. Big "For Lease" sign. I can't imagine why that location would have worked.

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

Bar One is gone, according to the Star.

2010 closings

Lobby on Bloor Street across from the ROM has finally closed. Repeated attempts to sell overly cute, pretentious food and drinks with obscene markups to the hotel crowd. Not sorry to see it go. Unfortunately, it's turning into a Gabby's pub, which means that the Gabby's pub two doors down will also be closing.

2010 closings

There is a truly cursed spot on Yonge north of Wellesley. The building was carelessly painted a gaudy yellow; paint is spattered all over the upper windows.

At street level, the only activity was a sign promising the arrival of a middle-eastern/pizza buffet (???) but apart from some jumbled equipment visible through yellowing newsprint that apapered over the space, it never came to pass.

More recently, the ground floor was repainted adobo red, and a new sign and equipment announced "Chiltepe Mexican Chili and Burritos". I must have walked by a million times without noticing that it was open. More recently, Chiltepe was joined by "Mom's Jerk" a Carribbean place that apparently winked in and out of existence out-of-town. i walked into mom's jerk to find the place mostly empty and smelling of disinfectant. There was nobody working at the mexican counter, and no food for sale at Mom's jerk, other than a few sad patties.

Two weeks ago, a new sign appeared in the window. "FOR LEASE". Rest in Peace, Jerk-Mom, and you phantom prince of chili, wherever you are...

2010 closings

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the Ciccio Sanwiccio on Yonge South of Bloor closed up this fall. It's now a thai place. i've been to both...NEXT!

2010 closings

Well, they're both gone now, with a large "business for sale" sign in the front window.
