Courthouse Seafood?

Hi all,

I have some friends in town this weekend from Chicago, including one who has never been to Boston. They've requested that we have some good seafood (chowder in particular) and I'd like to go somewhere reasonable and casual (entrees under $16, say). Not a fan of super-touristy places or of long lines, so will probably avoid Neptune.

Would you recommend Courthouse Seafood? I live in Cambridge, so it would be convenient, at least!
I can't seem to find too much about it on the board.

Thanks in advance!

random San Francisco reviews (Scala's Bistro, Eos, Zam Zam, Dottie's, Anchor Brewing, Monk's Kettle, Slanted Door, Zazie, Moylan's Brewpub)

Just wanted to say that thanks to the rec of this board, we hit up Zazie on a trip into SF from NYC. We loved it! Shared the bananas foster french toast (one slice) as an appetizer, then each had an egg dish. Mine was the "Greek" scramble, with feta and spinach. The bread was excellent (made there?) as were the potatoes (really nice garlicky flavor). Thanks for the rec! Will try the gingerbread pancakes next time...

Pizzeria Picco report

Just wanted to say that I stopped in here today (am visiting SF from Chicago, though am originally a New Yorker) for a pie and loved it. We had the "Klein" which was pizza with two kinds of olives, rapini, tomato sauce, mozzarella. Really excellent crust with a nice char and a good chew. Salad was also delicious (especially those radishes! I love your California produce) and ended it all with the vanilla soft serve from Strauss. Thanks for the recommendation!

affordable north end, or go to other neighborhood?

Hi all!

On your recommendation, we went to Massimino's in Boston tonight, and I must say that we were a bit disappointed! While the chicken piccata and the chicken paradiso were very well done, the marinara sauce was frankly a bit watery and lacked good flavor. Unfortunately, the problems with the sauce carried through to the rolled eggplant dish, which didn't taste like much because of the sauce.

I wonder if it's changed?

My two-week Chicago feast (a report, or more like a catalogue)

Ditto! Will have to track down that salty lemonade with soda. And must finally make the trip to Sticky Rice - thanks for the encouragement. On behalf of Chicago, glad you liked it, Josh! Come back soon.

best gelato/ice cream in barcelona

Hi there,

I'm posting for a friend who is making the trip in about 2 weeks. Are there any can't miss gelato or ice cream stores in the city? Places with homemade goods and exciting flavors, perhaps?

Thanks!

moderate or inexpensive, miami beach, eating solo

Just wanted to update that she did try Manolo's and loved it. Very friendly folks there, and quality food.

Yays and nays from Trader Joe's, lately [OLD]

I had never tried them before now, and am snacking on them now. It is interesting how they seem to have a bit of apricot essence to them. I think I like them, but I'm just not sure...

also, NAY on the tomato bisque in a can, which i tried for the first time last night. Not good.

Yays and nays from Trader Joe's, lately [OLD]

YAY: Bite size mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches. Addictive and not as bad for you as you'd think. Pumpkin butter. Morningstar farms Pizzaburgers (I can only find them at TJ's). Baby cucumbers, usually come 6 to a pack, unsweetened applesauce. Turkey meatballs. Chicken teriyaki (frozen)

Oh, and those incredible flax veggie tortilla chips. AND THE REDUCED FAT CHEESE CRUNCHIES - watch out, these are addictive.

Still unsure how I feel: Apricot kernels. Anyone try them?

NAY: Chipotle Lime Chili Chicken Burgers - they were recently recalled! Sprouted wheat bread (very dry, falls apart)

Lunch in the Keys

I was just about to suggest the same, as I was there just two days ago (now back in Chicago! boooo) and had a really nice dinner at the Island Grill. Great view, very laid back, small place, very delicious!

moderate or inexpensive, miami beach, eating solo

My mom is vacationing in Miami Beach this week (45th and Collins), and she is at a loss about where to eat. She's from Brooklyn, likes ethnic food, casual, moderate to inexpensive (entrees under $16, preferably). She often has a glass of wine with dinner, but it's not critical.

Any suggestions? She'd love to walk (and walks a lot) but is also willing/able to take a cab. I guess the most important thing is that she not feel too out of place eating alone, as it's her first time vacationing alone after a divorce (and without me or her sister).

Thanks!

Best Short Ribs in the City?

I'm still thinking about a short rib flatbread dish I had at Mercat a la Planxa in January...

seeking restaurants in key largo,fl area

Was about to post looking for roughly the same thing...hope others do chime in!

How to cook thin bone-in pork chops not on the grill?

I have had great results cooking these in a cast-iron pan on the stove. Just make sure you get it nice and hot first.

What do you put in your pancakes?

i really like raisins in pancakes but lots of people say i'm nuts...

suggestions - looking for character

I'd put Mercat a la Planxa in this category - great/unique atmosphere, excellent dishes (everything I've tried so far was great), and a decent value if you are ordering and sharing (plus if I recall they offer many wines by the glass)

Wicker Park

You might also consider Forno for brunch. I haven't been, but I love dinner there, and I've heard good things about brunch.

People's Lounge is, IMHO, no more than a mediocre tapas joint - you could do better elsewhere in the city, for sure, but if you're fixed on staying in WP, it's the only option I can think of.

What's your Salt Fetish?

It's interesting to see how may people chimed in here with low BP/fainting probs. I have one too, so I'm supposed to eat enormous quantities of salt every day. In my quest to get more salt in me, I've discovered some foods that are high in salt that I love:
-bananas with salt are surprisingly delicious
-kraft french dressing with cucumbers and chunky sea salt (yes, i know, kraft)
-oatmeal with sea salt and butter
-fries with ketchup pack a punch
-any soup - but particularly campbell's, with more salt poured in
-trader joes canned chili
-cottage cheese!!!

"Jazz"-ed up about apples

ipsedixit, have you seen the jazz website? i was also in love with jazz last year too, and i looked them up on the internet to learn more, only to find this!: http://www.jazzapple.com/

what kind of apple has a website?!

The power of suggestion - or not knowing the ingredients

I don't know if this counts, but I can think of a number of dishes I've made that had a "secret ingredient" that the tasters loved til they found out what it was...

E.g.,: brownies with black beans, smoothies with tofu, mashed potatoes with tofu, etc.

Help - My quinoa is mushy, not fluffy

OK, well, I haven't tried the tried and true quinoa suggestions on this page yet, but I did make millet yesterday. And guess what I got? MUSH.

Sigh.

Les Halles: a review

Perhaps they've changed the salade nicoise - it was definitely not canned tuna when I last had it (about 6 months ago).

Les Halles: a review

I've only ever been for lunch at the Park Ave location, but I've been happy with everything but the service. The salade nicoise is quite dependable, and the creme brulee is excellent.

Help - My quinoa is mushy, not fluffy

thank so much everyone! i made my mushy quinoa today, so it'll be a few days before i try again, but i'll let you know how it goes.

Help - My quinoa is mushy, not fluffy

I'm following the recipe in terms of proportion, bringing it to a boil then turning it down to a simmer...but I keep getting mushy quinoa. What's the secret??

South County, Rhode Island / Mystic, CT

Well, that's encouraging at least... what is normally so great about the place?

South County, Rhode Island / Mystic, CT

Yes! Blue Wave..

Maybe true about better pizza elsewhere, but for the gluten-free among us, it's exciting to have the option to have pizza at all.

GOOD Gluten Free Cupcakes??!!!!

I WAS SO EXCITED to see that risoterria had GF black and white cookies. I miss them so much. But I didn't get to try one - are they good?

Last time I was at Risoterria (last week), I wasn't sure I'd go back - the service was pretty bad (they were rude about us waiting inside on a 95 degree day, when there was clearly space to do so, the hostess twice consecutively told us that the wait would be 15-20 minutes, the panini was cold on the inside and asking them to re-warm it took another 10 minutes) and though I'm excited about what they offer (and I know many people are) I feel like that doesn't excuse them from offering good service..

Best Gelato

Tried the Grom gelato (W.village location) a few days ago and maybe my expectations were too high, but I was disappointed! I prefer il laboratorio, without a doubt. I tried the vanilla chocolate chip version, as well as the apricot. Apricot was definitely better, but still think laboratorio has them beat..

Best Method for Blueberry Storage?

I'm currently experimenting with storing blackberries this way...not sure whether to leave top ajar or not!

Would definitely appreciate additional advice :)
