Mexico City - Aguila y Sol or Izote?
PAXIA Avenida de la Paz in San Angel... Just loved it
Review w/ photos: Izote de Patricia Quintana
My personal experience September 2009 at IZOTE was very deceiving. No complaints as such, but being a Hound , honestly: Prices too high , even for appetizers, wine list expensive and limited, decor and amiebience was univiting and on the boring side. Service was good , the tortillas were REALLY small and the food just OK.
Would not go back. Suggestion: instead, try PAXIA at Avenida de La Paz in San Angel. We were pleasantly surprised by this young , unpublished , not yet famous chef: Daniel Obadia. this is a place our party really went WOW, why have we not been here before?

Thanks Nopal, you got my point...saludos
Authentic Gorditas
I must disagree with the person saying tlacoyos is a variation of gorditas... they are actually a different size , shape and are put in the comal already witha filling of frijol, garbanzo, or a differnet kind of bean... usually with queso fresco , cilantro and salsa on top.
Gorditas are usualy more in Northern Mexico, usually made of corn masa. But in Torreon, state of Coahuila you will find some that are made with wheat "flour" masa.
From my father's home town Ciudad Victoria, state capital of Tamaulipas comes the most famous gordita name "Doña Tota" who was famous for many years and would even serve personalities such as the President himself when they came to town. She passed away, and who ever kept the one restaurant and owned the name, decided to go Franchise! Surprisingly enough, and I guess because gorditas are so easy to make (masa, comal, and good stuffings) You will find several succesful "Doña Tota's" scattered all around Mexico.
A variation on a usual , regular gordita: Bocoles served in Northern Veracruz state & Tamaulipas . Smaller, they use some rendered beef and pork fat , to make them fluffy and the stuffings might be slightly different too.
The Baja Med Movement:La Querencia, Villa Saverios,Baja Med Pizza Co., and beyond at the frontier of a gastronomic revolution
ok you have made your point...I will do so when in northern Baja.
By the way Tampico is the name of a city in the state of Tamaulipas.

Great info on what is happenig in Baja. I Appologize for being a purist , it would be interesting to see more regional Mexican food over there. Baja does not have a long standing, Mexican culinary tradition, but they can always borrow these kind of recipes from other areas (Oaxaca, Veracruz, Yucatán, Tabasco, Michoacán, Jalisco, Puebla)
San Jose del Cabo has two restaurants that are doing a decent effort for "real" quality, upscale Mexican food with a twist (no fusion) El Chilar and Don Emiliano
Kudos to them for being proud of their heritage.
Try them next time , when in Los cabos

Los Xitomates Puerto Vallarta closed?
I have heard that los Xitomates in Downtown PV has closed for good. Have not been in town recently , but a good friend told me there is a sign that says "Closed for renovation"
People around the area know they had problems at their first venue, and when they moved just across the street we all hoped it would go better for them. It would be kind of sad to see yet another original restaurant close , if this information is accurate....
Does any one have any moe information?

Restaurants in the vicinity of Puerto Vallarta
Most of the variety and recognized restaurants are in Puerto Vallarta proper, maybe rent a car or stay in Town. Here are my commnets on the places mentioned above:
Le Fort: overpriced , not tasty
Frascatti : only some salad dishes and pastas and beef yummy, dont order fish
Mark's : Great
Mezzogiorno : Great
Also "Tacos on the Street" in La Cruz on weekends very tasty , not far from Frascati
Columba, in la Cruz, tasty, fresh seafood for lunch
Roots: Vegetarian , fresh regional produce
San Pancho: Mar Plata, Cafe del Mar very good both maybe not open during the summer time
ZIHUATANEJO "chowing" suggestions needed :)
I have not been there in a while but I fondly remember a few places:
Ruben's Burger, La Sirena Gorda fish tacos, if you can drive a little outside town , go to
Barra de Potosi, a beach not too far from Zihua, going South. There you will find differnet "enramadas" little restaurnts that only sell limited seafoos and fresh fish a la "Talla" . Marinated with mild spices, and Grilled whole. Served with totillas and rice, fresh salsas.
Fanci Place in Ixtapa: Villa de la Selva, upand comig chef form DF with interesting menu
40th Bday: In Mexico City
Mybe for something really festive, authentic, yummy, instead of fancy dinner seriously consider lunch at El Bajio. You can reserve a large table in advance, it is near Polanco, on Avenida Cuitlahuac. Arrive around 1.30 pm for lunch , with live music, amazing daily specials, and excellent carnitas, aguas frescas, gorditas petroleras. They have been around for 35 years or so... Family operated Recently written about on NY times and CNN

Report: Puerto Vallarta
There is all kinds of restaurants for all kinds of pocket sizes. Some people don't realize even in Mexico it is expensive for the local owners to operate a place with full bar, bilingual staff, clean decent bathrooms fans or a/c. If you like good food and dont mind paying for the little extras that make it confortable, you will find several places in Vallarta that have both. Anyway if you convert it to US dlls it is still good prices...
Puerto Vallarta Restaurant: El Arrayan
Excellent place, they have been voted best Mexican Restaurant fo rthe last 3 years.
Their site: elarrayan.com.mx is very informative and has lots of pictures...
food/research suggestions for baja/ensenada - por favor!!!!
