When to salt a steak? My research.

What I like to do is salt about an hour per inch; rinse all the salt off, pat very very dry. Just a bit of olive oil on both sides and season with pepper. (No more salt!) Totally divine. It's salted throughout the meat, instead of just the surface.

I thought I hated Tofu...

Try making tofu croutons - cut into cubes, toss with olive oil. Bake 375F until crunchy (40 min on convection) and then season with salt, pepper and sesame seeds. I also like to season with curry powder too.

filing for spring rolls?

Try mango, leafy lettuce and grilled salmon. Actually, grab a sushi menu - and anything that sounds good in a sushi roll will work great in a roll.

Also love Cashew Nut Dipping Sauce:

1 tbl sugar
1/3 cup hoisin sauce
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 tbl chili garlic sauce
1/4 cup water
3 tbl cashew butter

In a small saucepan over medium heat, warm the oil. When it is hot, add the garlic and cook until lightly browned, about 30 seconds. Add hoisin, sugar, chili garlic sauce, and half of the water, stir well and simmer for 15 seconds. Add the other half of the water if you want a thinner consistency.

An Asian flair to a top-notch steak?

I know I am SO late to this post - but I hate marinating good steaks too. The next time you do this, use a Szechuan Peppercorn Finishing Salt....
1. Toast a handful of Szechuan Peppercorn, once toasted and flagrant
2. Add equal amount of sea salt - toss a bit
3. Grind to consistency that you like
Use that instead of S&P

ISO Chinese Sesame Balls

I get them frozen at Ranch99. Its so easy to keep in the freezer and take out a few balls for a quick 10 minute dessert.

Need to feed 50 people on the cheap but good - ideas?

Go to your local warehouse - buy ground chuck & a tub of gorgonzola...make gorgonzola stuffed burgers.
I like the pork idea too - make your own tacos with a nice taco bar

Market with live seafood in Sarasota area?

Coming from CA, I've been spoiled with supermarkets that sell live fish/crab/shrimp. You'd think that being surrounded by water, we would have more markets that sell live seafood. Any suggestions? I wouldn't mind driving to St. Petersburg area or even Tampa.

Sarasota: good seafood, Italian, ice cream

Lesser known Italian restaurant is called Gios. There are a couple of locations - one in Ellenton near outlet mall and the other in Bradenton right off I75 on the SR70 exit. They have great pizzas there.

Need a great restaurant in Sarasota

I agree with Irwin - Michael's on East is overrated. Its ok food, service is a little snobbish. They do have a nice piano bar and the decor is great.

The Table is awesome. Beach Bistro is massively expensive and its such a small place that it would be difficult to accommodate a large party. Its more of a romantic dinner at the beach type of place. Try "Cork" in St. Armands. Its brand new and the executive chef there was the exec chef at Beach Bistro. I was just at Zoria last weekend and was not impressed. Its nice but not a memorable experience.

Euphemia Haye's Haye Loft features a dessert bar that is pretty amazing. The food there is good too, but I'd recommend the dessert bar if you are thinking of doing something after dinner.
