I have an overabundance of boxed crackers, mostly wheat thins and the like

I wonder if the crackers would work well in place of matzo in matzo brei:

Maybe the crackers wouldn't have enough air pockets in them, but might be worth a shot!

How do I follow someone?

To add to carolinadawg's excellent answer, if you're on a mobile device, the Follow button will be found under the expandable bar at the top of the user's profile page, where the user's avatar and username are displayed with a blue link that reads "All Discussions." To the right of that blue link there is a gray arrow; click the arrow, the section will expand, and if you're logged in, you'll see a +Follow button as the last option.

BunMee new 2nd location in Downtown SF FiDi opens Wed 1/15/14

Went here today for the first time. There was a long line that moved quickly, and despite limited seating, my friend and I got a two-top no problem.

I was disappointed that this location didn't serve the Mekong Shrimp Salad listed on the website. But in the end I was very happy with my Caramel Citrus Rice Bowl (pickled papaya, citrus segments, avocado, crispy shallots, house caramel sauce over brown rice and organic tofu--I skipped the jalapeños, they offer garlic rice as well as brown rice, and your protein choices include pork, chicken, steak, or shrimp; $11 and $2 more for steak or shrimp). The pickled papaya was delicious, and the blend of flavors and textures (citrus, avocado, sweet caramel, crunchy bean sprouts--not listed on the menu) was very pleasant. The amount of food was perfect too.

My friend got the Hawker Bowl with chicken and was very happy as well (fried egg, spicy cucumbers, Vietnamese herbs, bok choy, pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, spicy mayo, and fried shallots over garlic or brown rice and grilled pork, chicken, tofu, or steak [+2]; $11.50).

I thought the decor was charming, and each table had the requisite bottle of "Rooster" sriracha.

I'll definitely be going back to try the Hanoi-Style Crispy Catfish banh mi. Or the Smoky Eggplant banh mi.

Afterward we popped into the Japanese sweets store next door and got a black sesame-red bean paste-mochi treat to top it all off.

Not Being Able to Reply More than Once

Yes we're aware of this issue, but as mentioned here:

we've been unable to reproduce it, which makes it incredibly difficult to troubleshoot the problem. We are continuing to look into it.

I'm able to reproduce in IE8, but IE11 works fine. We'll see if we can pin down the issue, but as Jacquilynne mentioned, your best bet for the time being is to use a different browser.

Thanks for the detailed reports.

No notifications

Hi c oliver.

The filter is something you actually set up in your individual email program, not a setting in your Chowhound account.

For instance, if you use Gmail, while you have a notification email open from Chowhound, select More from the menu at the top of the email, then Filter Messages Like These, and choose the parameters for filtering the messages. A good one might be to filter the phrase "New reply to" in the subject line.

Hope that helps!

Agrihoods

This new development concept for housing/small farms is fascinating to me: building housing developments around a small organic farm. And it's very surprising that it hasn't taken hold in the Bay Area, where I live. (Though I suspect it's because land is too expensive here?)

From The New York Times:

Farm-to-Table Living Takes Root

Home buyers who crave open spaces, verdant fields and fresh food are flocking to “agrihoods.”

One suggestion for folks who find the number of notifications they receive overwhelming is that you could create a filter so that those notification emails go straight into a folder you designate in your email, rather than flooding your inbox. Then you could scan them at your leisure.

Irish Cheeses - Cheese of the Month (March 2014)

I did not like the Somerdale; flavor and texture (too soft, almost like a whipped cheese) were weird to me.

I really liked the Cahill Irish whiskey cheddar. Eating the cheese solo I thought the whiskey flavor was quite strong (though it should be noted that I don't drink so perhaps am more sensitive to the flavor of liquor than other folks), but eaten on thin sesame crackers it was perfect.

As for the Kerrygold Kilaree, I also liked it very much on crackers, but on its own it was far less appealing.

Skillet Cornbread

Hi andabien.

In step 1, you melt the butter in the skillet in the oven. So in step 2, you pour the melted butter out of the hot skillet so it can be mixed with the milk and eggs, and place the skillet back in the oven to stay hot for when you're ready to bake the cornbread.

Hope that helps!

Hi dmjordan.

We're aware of the bouncing issues, though it sounds worse on your iPad Mini than is typical--we're not sure why.

We're also unable to reproduce the other two issues. Without being able to see an issue ourselves, it's difficult to diagnose the cause, but we'll keep an eye on it.

Fish Tacos - SF Dish of the Month March 2014

Five of us went to Garaje today. Three people ordered fish tacos, one had vegetarian tacos, and one had the double cheeseburger. Someone also tried the “surf and turf” taco (El Camino).

We had three kinds of fish tacos: the Plancha Grilled Mojo Fish + Guac (sustainable tilapia, cabbage, cilantro, lime mayo; $5), the Seared Wild Ahi + Avo (chimichurri, chipotle mayo, cabbage, pico de gallo, corn tortillas; $6), and the Ale-Battered Farmed Tilapia (cabbage, chipotle mayo, flour tortilla; $5). Consensus was that the beer-battered fish was the best. It was also the simplest, just a *hefty* serving of deep-fried fish (the size you’d find in fish and chips rather than in a taco) on top of a nicely spicy chipotle mayo and some cabbage. The chimichurri on the seared tuna taco was very good, but the tuna itself was (for me) disappointing--tough and fairly tasteless. The grilled tilapia was pretty good, and the avocado on top was delicious. However we agreed that all of the fish tacos were on the bland side and really needed spritzing up with the lime wedges provided--even could’ve used extra lime (only one wedge per taco was served)--and for my money, using real coleslaw instead of plain tasteless cabbage would be a big help. The tortillas were lovely though, whether corn or flour.

As for the Street Style veg tacos (grilled corn tortillas, onions, cilantro, salsa; $3 each), they looked great--in addition to the listed ingredients it looked like they contained beans and corn--and the person who ordered them seemed happy, though he commented that they were more like a snack than a meal. (Note that options for vegetarians are extremely limited at Garaje. The vegetarian in our group would’ve appreciated a tofu/tempeh/fake meat option among the tacos.) The El Camino taco (skirt steak asada, plancha Gulf prawns, Jack cheese, roasted salsa, guacamole, corn tortillas; $6) earned a meh. But the double cheeseburger (1/3-pound hand-formed Marin Sun Farms grass-fed chuck, double American cheese, grilled onions, pickles, lettuce, tomato, Thousand Island, Acme bun; $9) elicited oohs and ahs from the table, even this pescatarian. The person who ordered it said it was good but that it had a bit too much char on the meat for his taste.

We all agreed that the portions were exceptional for the price, and friends/coworkers tell me the beer selection is good. (I don’t drink so can’t say.) Service is fast and friendly.

Note that Garaje is CASH ONLY.

Chow eye exam??? New small font?

Ha. Just for future reference, to clear the cache in Safari on your iPhone, go to Settings, scroll down and select Safari, and under the second section, Privacy, there are four buttons. You want the last two: Clear History (to clear your browsing history) and Clear Cookies and Data. Select each of those (and when you do you'll have to confirm your selection), then go back to the browser on your phone and return to Chowhound or whatever other site you were previously looking at to see if that resolved any display or login issues for you. Hope that helps!
