What are you baking these days? June 2011 [old]

I just made lemon cardamom scones in my new mini-scone pan -- what fun! And served them with homemade strawberry jam made from farmers' market Gaviota strawberries.

where to buy heirloom beans?

yes, so glad to know Nicole's has heirloom beans! I too did not recall a variety of beans there. It's much closer than Surfas, although a field trip to Culver City might be in order soon!

The best uniquely LA food gifts

Tangerine marmalade (or any of their other marmalades) from E. Waldo & Co. in Sierra Madre.

Pasadena Recommendations

Saladang Thai on Fair Oaks Ave. always gets good reviews on this board.

Anyone know anything about the Charcuterie that's supposedly coming in Sierra Madre?

Where is the new farmer's market?? I haven't heard of this.

Macaroons & More at Europane

I've had one of those macaroons, and you're right, they are FABULOUS!!!

Best live/eat neighborhood in LA

I found that the commute home during rush hour is what killed me. I'm tired, hungry, and it just took forever.

Best live/eat neighborhood in LA

Yes, the 10 is horrible, even worse than the 710 or 110. Like I said, I really liked Long Beach, just hated the commute.

Strawberry Cupcakes

I haven't tried them, but here's a recipe for strawberry banana muffins that uses fresh or frozen strawberries. The same website has a recipe for strawberry tea bread that I'm sure would work just as well as muffins.

Best live/eat neighborhood in LA

Plus, Central Library is awesome. Okay, that's not related to food, but it's true!

Best live/eat neighborhood in LA

I love Long Beach, and I've been to a lot of these places and they're great. However, the commute to downtown, whether by car or light rail, is HORRENDOUS. I think I took 5 years off my life the year I commuted to downtown from Long Beach. Don't know what it's like from San Pedro, but would imagine it's just about as bad.

Cherry Picking and other you pick Fruit..

Sorry, geography was never my best subject! Thanks for the clarification.
And I agree, it does get awfully crowded on the weekends, but I still find it fun.

Ramps are BACK!!!

I was wondering what would be a good way to cook them. This sounds wonderful!

Cherry Picking and other you pick Fruit..

In the fall, you can go apple-picking at Oak Glen, a small town out past Temecula on the way to Palm Springs. There are a bunch of apple farms there with the most incredible apples. Lots of fun for kids and grown-ups. http://www.oakglen.net/

Underwood Family Farms in Ventura also has a U-pick operation, with blueberry picking starting late May. http://www.underwoodfamilyfarms.com/CropCalendar.htm

Closer to home, it looks like you can pick strawberries at Cal Poly Pomona, although I've never been. http://www.csupomona.edu/~farmstore/index.html

Happy picking!

Ramps are BACK!!!

I saw them in Whole Foods Pasadena recently. Horribly expensive, but intriguing.

Best Farmers markets in L.A.

Wednesday Santa Monica is phenomenal, but just too far of a drive from Pasadena area to go very often. The Saturday Pasadena farmers mkt at Victory Park is quite respectable, especially if you get there early. That's my go-to weekly farmer's mkt.

Bad Experience in Pasadena..........

Your reservation was for 6:45, and you left in a snit at 6:50? Huh.

Donut Man, at last!

You guys are making me hungry.

Pasadena/Eagle Rock Vegetarian-Friendly Dining?

All India Cafe in Old Town Pasadena has both vegetarian and meat dishes. There are several other Indian restaurants in Old Town that probably have both vegetarian and meat dishes. Thai would be another way to go. Lots of people like Saladang on Fair Oaks Ave.

Afternoon tea ideas =)

Has anyone ever been to the Four Seasons Tea Room in Sierra Madre? It's on Baldwin, above Sierra Madre Blvd. It looks nice.

What is faloudeh?

Mouth watering . . . drool gathering . . . faloudi with fresh lemon juice . . . best frozen dessert EVER . . . ..

What is your favorite Cooking Magazine

Hear, hear! Eating Well is a wonderful magazine, one of the few that I read from cover to cover. The recipes almost always turn out well, and some are standouts. I made half my Thanksgiving dinner from the November issue, and it turned out beautifully.

Where are some of the best bakeries in LA?

Europane in Pasadena
Wildflour Bakery in Sierra Madre (good croissants)

Best Ice Cream Parlor in LA (like Farrells used to be)

I predict that your kids will LOVE Farrell's, and your husband will be slightly disappointed, but still happy to see a bit of the old Farrell's. For those with fond memories of going to Farrell's as a kid (like me), there is really no substitute. The current Farrell's is not quite like what I remember, but close enough to count for a trip down memory lane. I vote for the long trip out to Santa Clarita.

TESCO Fresh and Easy

I went to the Arcadia location yesterday and left feeling underwhelmed. I didn't like all the plastic packaging which, along with the warehouse-style feel of the decor, felt very sterile and unappealing. I'm sorry, but acorn squash does not grow shrink-wrapped in plastic! Blecchhh.

Trader Joe's is so much more interesting and fun to shop at, and to me the food is much more appealing than F&E. I would more likely go out of my way to shop at TJ than at F&E.

Annual Sons of Norway Lutefisk & Meatball Dinner

I think it sounds like great fun! Thanks for the heads up on this, WildSwede. I'm always looking for Scandinavian food/gifts/stuff.

Unlike some others on this board, I'M not a big pansy about trying lutefisk (wink, wink, grin)!

Take-Out Dinner for 6 in Pasadena -- Recommendations?

DH has asked for help in arranging food and drink for a small party of 6-7 people from church. I was thinking of getting some middle eastern food: chicken/beef kabobs, rice, hummus, tabouli, etc. Based on reading CH posts, it looks like Good Times Pita on Arroyo Blvd. might be a good choice. Alternatively, I was thinking of getting the "fajita party pack" from Baja Fresh. The food does not have to be dinner food, but the party will be held at 7 p.m., which is most people's dinnertime.

Any recommendations?

Need suggestions for GOOD meal home delivery

Are they open to having a personal chef come in and cook a bunch of meals for them in their kitchen? This will give a more personal touch and would be geared specifically to their preferences and dietary needs.

Girls lunch in Pasadena?

Green Street Cafe is very nice. It's off Lake Ave, behind Williams Sonoma. Very good salads, and I'm pretty sure they serve alcohol.

Chow Gold Line - rails to good food

Robin's BBQ
