Aldi Food Stores-Meat quality? [moved from Chicago board]

Thanks for this post, we are just now getting Aldi here in central Fl, we shopped there in the early 80's when I lived in the Chicago area, and they were so so, I am looking forward to shopping there next week, if i can make the time.

Guy Off the Hook

I've actually started to like guy on DDD, but this new show is odd to say the least, to me (and I only watched about 5 min) it was a lot like a bad infomercial.

Bourdain - Egypt - last one of the season!

While I certainly don't subscribe to their religious beliefs, I must say that everyone who consumes meat should see where it comes from, I grew up on a farm, raising and slaughtering almost all of our meat, and was taught that that piece of meat is something to appreciate, and that an animal gave its life for your meal, sadly very few people in society see that today, even veggies represent someones hard work to make it to your plate.

Olive Garden--was shockingly impressed

I agree, I went in the O.G here in Altamonte Springs , right after its re-do about a 1 1/2 years ago , and it was great, I love to see all the "foodies" stick their nose in the air about any chain....there is some really good decent priced food to be had there.

No reservations : southwest

I will admit Ted is an acquired taste, as for bypassing Santa Fe, I think that move was spot on, being a native New Mexican, we used to jokingly refer to S.F. as San Francisco east, it is a tourist town, with lots of high profile residents from other parts of the country, and that's fine, but for a road trip that us "common folks" would take it was great, uhhhhh except for the beemer!, should have something a little more common man, as for Ted being a hate monger?...hardly.

Imho, the best episode yet, I've traveled most all of those roads many times, I always wanted to try those date shakes, and get down to the Salton sea, but time would not allow, as for the red vs green chile,I love'm both, growing up in the Pecos valley of N.M., I ate both almost daily, and can vouch for them being as good a A.B. said, the visit with uncle Ted was the icing on the cake!, A.B. thanks for a great show!

Who has a jar of bacon fat in their fridge?

you're kidding, right?, i thought it was a law we keep bacon fat here in the south!, I use it from flavoring a package of ramen, adding to ground chuck for burgers, meatballs,to flavoring a pot of beans, i try to keep a little pork sausage fat on hand for gravy too.

I'm curious, how do these peoples preferences make them "idiots"?, could it be that these folks cant afford to eat at better places, or could there be many other factors in their preferences?, calling them idiots seems a bit harsh, and uncalled for.

Thanksgiving in Orlando

I would really reccomend Publix, they carry all you have described, and it is much better quality than average(albertsons, winn dixie, etc) grocery store pre prepared food, I think you have to order the ham or turkey in advance, good luck, and although it's early have a great holiday!

In-N-Out coming to Orlando?

When I read this ,I sent an E-mail to the IN-N-OUT co., already got a response neither confirming, or denying the rumor, but a note saying they were in the process of expanding, and buying real estate to do so....interesting!

Bread baking questions

I regularly bake bread, and do so for several families on the holidays, and while it is good, I wonder if it could be improved, my questions are,as follows 1. the recipe I use calls for shortening, in thinking about this I would really rather use butter, thinking it would add to the flavor, the shortening can gives a reverse sub, saying you add water when sub'n shortening for butter, so do I need to remove water from the recipe when using butter?2. while the bread becomes pretty lite in texture, it is much heavier than even a good bakery roll, sometimes this is good but not always, what would happen if i were to use cake flour in place of the all purpose flour?, in the articles I have read it says the cake flour lends to a more delicate texture.3. the recipe I use also calls for sugar, I am really not crazy about using sugar, and am curious about switching to honey, again the things I have read say to use roughly 7/8 as much honey as you would sugar, as it is sweeter, and to also remove some water from the recipe, I would like to make all 3 of these changes but do not like to waste things, and don't want to make an inedible mess, and my background in trying to go faster with cars and bikes tells me 1 change at a time ,so you don't get lost....what do you bakers out there far wiser, and experienced than I recommend?, thank you.

Is Publix key lime pie real?

Publix has an excellent bakery for a supermarket chain, the key lime pie is quite good, but i gotta go with you on better in the keys, my fave is Blonde Giraffe, second is an Orlando based chain,Bahama breeze, also has killer Key Lime pie, that brown sugar grahm cracker crust is obscenely good!...oh if you ever get by a Bruster's ice cream, try the Key Lime ice cream...better than most pies!
