Des Moines Update

Haven't been to Lucca this summer but in the past, they infused their own vodka to make seasonal martinis.....chocolate chili martini in winter, lavender lemon martini in the summer....you get the idea. You might ask at the bar.....there are only a couple of tables in the bar area and about 5-6 stools on the side of the bar against the wall. If you are hungry, it is well worth a dinner reservation! Great spot!

Des Moines Update

You are close to Lucca, a wonderful Italian restaurant with a small bar area. Very upscale place with minimal decor. We love it and enjoy their martinis......ask what special martinis they have. 420 E Locust St

Ceja Vineyards in the Carneros region....best chardonnay ever. The tasting room used to be at the vineyard....now I think it may be in downtown Napa.....darn. Worth a try though. http://www.cejavineyards.com/

Good bakeries in the Des Moines area?

I like the Highland Bakery on the North Side for cookies and pastries....I am guessing they do cakes too. I have just never had one from there.

Smitty's tenderloin on Army post road has the best tenderloin in DSM IMHO.

Outer banks n.c.

Just returned from Corolla. Best meal: Red Sky Cafe in Duck. Also Sam and Omies was out of soft shell crab....said we just missed the season for their provider. Worst meal BY FAR was at Sunset Grille in Duck. Had to send appetizer back twice! They just couldn't get it hot.....not too hard. Finally took it off the bill. The food there was horrible! Service was not much better. Steamers in Corolla was great....we ate at picnic tables outside.

What shouldn't I miss in St. Louis?

Fitz' Rootbeer.....a great lunch place and the kids can actually watch them bottle rootbeer behind a glass window...our family loved it! The rootbeer float is huge as are other portions! You should share if you want a float!

Nebraska, SD, ND, Iowa Trip

It has been about 10 years since my stay at Chestnut Charm but I was disappointed. May I suggest that you drive about an hour East to Des Moines and stay at the Butler House? http://www.butlerhouseongrand.com/ It is a wonderful B&B......plus there are some great restauurnats in DSM and the owners can ssist in making recommendations and reservations. My hubby and I stayed there for our recent anniversary and were thrilled with the accomodations and dinner assistance!
