Trader Joe's YAY/NAY - April 2014

I love those citrus gum drops, too...can't buy them most the time cause I'll eat way too many. They are my go-to candy to sneak into movie theaters :)

Weight Watchers Foodies -- No Fooling, It's the April Edition!

Down 1.2 at weigh in yesterday, which was better than I had feared definitely (especially since I had a really nice dinner out with friends the night before). And then came home and got struck down with an awful stomach virus-a horrible 24 hours, especially since it was a beautiful saturday. Bright side-down 2 pounds since yesterday morning :) and feel better today, though only snacking on saltines so far.

We had friends over for a barbecue last weekend and made these chicken red onion and mint kebabs, which are one of my very favorites-turns out to be about 5 points a serving (I didn't count all the olive oil since it's a marinade and most of it stays in the bag). Served with brown rice, a little feta and salad and some homemade tzatziki.
Fabulous meal

Where to eat near the swisshotel singapore?

Talked to him and he said the s election is just overwhelming. Thanked you for the recs and asked where you'd recommend in that list for the best local/regional food. He's curious about pepper crab. Any tips?

Thank you both! I emailed the link to him and I'll get back to you if he has more questions :). The time zone difference is making our communication a bit challenging.

My husband is working for ten days or so in Singapore, and isn't familiar at all with the city. He'll have very limited time to sneak away; where should he head from this hotel? Thanks!

Weight Watchers Foodies -- March Forth Edition! -- March 2014 [OLD]

I did an investment cooking day with a couple friends a week or so ago, and one thing we did was a ton of poached chicken, which I then shredded in my Kitchenaid and we froze in one pound portions. I love beans and lentils, so those are easy to cook in advance, filling and healthy. My favorite crockpot recipe is a jar of pepperoncini poured over a boneless pork roast-shred the meat and make the most fabulous little tacos or put on shredded cabbage with a little cotija or feta for a really flavorful salad. I also roast a ton of veggies at a time and then put them in meal sized containers-my fridge has been freezing everything in the produce drawers, so this helps me not waste stuff and also have filling food to grab.

Feel your pain. We are selling GS cookies this year and still have cases in the house! It has helped that I've decided to only put things in my mouth that are really worth the calories...not always successful, but makes me more able to ignore the cookies when I know there's sticky toffee pudding tonight.

Big travel week again for me too...down .2 of a pound, but I'd expected to gain with three dinners out in a row. I did OK traveling-but had three nice dinners out in a row and wasn't completely on my plan. I find it almost impossible to track points when eating out (esp since I'm not at chain restaurants) so just do the best I can with ordering and go from there. This week, the biggest problem was activity-I'd been really active earlier this week, but then drove 13 hours in a few days and worked those days too-so just didn't get much movement in at all. Fortunately, sunny weekend and hopefully I'll get moving today (although today is both high tea for my 8 year old's birthday and our annual St. paddy's day progressive dinner-I'm really gonna have to move to make up those calories!)

I'm in the same boat; currently out of town one or two nights a week. I've only been doing WW this go around for about 3 weeks, and am losing steadily (not a ton, but steady, so yay!)-my travel days are the toughest. Coworkers of mine always bring frozen meals to eat in their hotel room, but I hate that-if I have to be away from home and family, I want to do something that is enjoyable, not sad :). I've been trying to eat a nice meal out, but focus on good fish or steak at dinner with veggies and a salad, rather than pasta and cream sauces. Skip dessert, but have a nice glass of wine. I am usually able to be more active on my travel days, so that helps (no kids and kid activities to juggle those nights). Sushi is a great idea-though fairly slim pickings in Southern Oregon! Toughest travel times are meals out with coworkers-I'm a fan of finding the top-reviewed local restaurant and getting something smaller and wonderful, but some of them would rather go to the big chain restaurants and indulge. Not many healthy options at the Black Bear Diner :/.

Weight Watchers Foodies -- Groundhog Day Edition! -- February 2014 [OLD]

Dairy Queen, you are amazing! I actually picked a pork loin instead of the roast, so I should be good there. I don't have oranges on hand, but only 1/2 a cup of juice split into at least ten servings should be fine (my loin is four pounds, so I'll get more servings out of it). Same with the avocado...one divided up that much shouldn't be bad. Figure I'll serve with brown rice...I'll report back.

The two recipes you list below sound fabulous! And really, I think I'm just gonna do my two weeks on Simply Filling rather than Simple Start...it works better for how I cook, and I like the exercise incentive that being able to count my activity points gives me.

Next week, two nights away from town traveling. I always eat the worst then....will need to make a plan ahead of time.

I think I'm trying this slow cooked jerk pork with caribbean salsa today: http://www.skinnytaste.com/2013/02/sl...

Most the ingredients seem to fit the Simply Filling model....thoughts? Has anyone tried it?

I didn't see this before my note above...you're a woman after my own heart, Valerie. I'll try the yogurt you recommend.

To make things even tougher, I'm not a fan of artificial sweeteners either (common on this board, not so common in WW land....). Picked up some Stevia and Agave yesterday, after reading that they tasted the least artificial.

I'm supposed to be doing Simple Start but the first meal I made last night drifted to Simply Filling. Simple Start is really limited IMO.

I often do a half sandwich-whole wheat PB and J-on the run for breakfast. Like banana PB smoothies, bacon and scones :)....I see some pancake recipes on Simply Filling. My favorite low cal breakfast is toasted sandwich thins, each spread with with half of a wedge of Laughing Cow light, with sliced radish and some lettuce. I'll look at smoothie recipes more closely.

Hey, all. Believe it or not, I take credit for starting these threads way back in the day-of course, I immediately fell off the wagon and now am at my highest weight for any time I wasn't pregnant. So, here's to feeling motivated! It helps that it's starting to stay light longer so I don't want to just hibernate after work. Went to my first ever meeting today-I've always tried online before-and am going to take a stab at the simple start.

About to head to the grocery store to stock up on some healthy choices. I really need help with breakfast-I don't like eggs unless they have have a ton of things added that make them not taste like eggs-and not a huge fan of yogurt or hot cereal. Ideas?

I love, love love these triple ginger cookies from Epicurious. The candied ginger makes them chewy and extra wonderful.

COOKIES - Home Cooking Dish of the Month (December 2013)

I have been fooling around with making my own flours but honestly, the Bobs Red Mill is great and not nearly as expensive as the others. We've been stocking up in the freezer when it goes on sale. With cookies, I'll add 1/4 tsp xantham gum to the recipe but I'm not sure that's really necessary.

Re the size-I make the cookies smaller than she recommends and bake them quite a bit less.

I've made the cornmeal lime a couple times and they were just fabulous. Had to make them gluten free, too, and turned out beautifully.

healthiest meal you can think of (that you still want to eat)

oh yes! a good red lentil soup with smoked paprika and just a drizzle of fabulous olive oil-feels way richer and more indulgent than it really is.

healthiest meal you can think of (that you still want to eat)

I make a mental list of "healthy things that taste so awesome that I would eat them even if they weren't healthy". Roasted veggies is firmly on this list-especially cauliflower, brussell sprouts, garlic, onion, green beans.

Other things on the list, not roasted: Mangos; ahi tuna poke; avocado and oranges with a little salt and pepper and balsamic vinegar.

My kids will eat unsweetened apple sauce every single day. Garden produce of most kind. Zucchini ribbon salad with a little lemon juice and olive oil and parmesan.

Chocolate brioche

I just posted on the what are you baking thread, but ended up making Joanne Chang's brioche recipe from Flour, which sits over night. The next morning, made roll sized brioche (instead of the loaves she makes in the recipe) and tucked chocolate chips in the center. Yummy! I'd prefer something a little meltier in the middle but this was a nice result with little fiddling around

What are you baking these days? September 2013 edition!

Made the brioche from Joanne Chang's Flour this week and they were great. Not for the impatient-you make the dough the day before, which I hadn't realized-but it worked out well. Made enough dough for about 3 dozen roll sized brioche, and I made them three days in a row, keeping the dough in the fridge. Not quite as much rise by the third day but the flavor was better, I think. The first day, I tucked a few chocolate chips into the center of each one and that was a huge hit.

Any recent info on dining in Friday Harbor?

Wow, thanks all! I'll start checking all these places out. We're here for a family wedding with reception at the yacht club, but we have three nights on the island, at a rental house. We'll probably eat at least a couple of meals out-with kids and adults-and maybe one meal for us as a couple, sans kids.
