Gaznates

Hello,

Okay, after much searching and banging my head against my monitor, I've come to ask for some help. Does anyone have a recipe for gaznates?

Thanks,

- Nate

Rockford, IL food?

I don't know that I'd recommend El Burrito Loco to someone as Rockford's top-notch Mexican. It's good at 2 in the morning, but it's not exactly great. El Molcajete in Belvidere, Los Portales near State and 3rd and many of the places in the South Main area are better.

I'd recommend 5 Forks and Cru before anything else, I think.

Rockford IL restaurant

I remember Luigi's being around as far back as 1991 or '92 but don't know how long before that it was there.

Papa Johns, Domino's and the like stay in business because of Rockford's love of mediocrity. These chains are voted "Best of Rockford" by the Register Star because they've got more advertising money to sink into the paper than Capri and Primo's do. It's just sickening, but it's the way it is.

Cru is about a block from City Hall, they've got a nice lunch. Kuma's is worth a visit too. As far as downtown pizza, Capri is about the only way to go.

Rockford IL restaurant

I don't believe so - I know the place on Rockton is closed, and I don't think they moved.

I love that Thunder Bay is listed on there as "fine dining". Good grief.

That sounds like Parthenios that you lunched at.

The best barbecue around Rockford are out at the Smokehouse, a little bbq place attached to a gas station on the corner of Harrison and South Main. Everything is very good and you get a ton of food.

Luigi's had a bar in the past, so I'm guessing they still offer alcohol. Their pizza is indeed very good, but I think the Capri is still my favorite pizza in town.

Where to buy Matcha in Rkfd/northern IL?

It's powdered green tea.

Where to buy Matcha in Rkfd/northern IL?

Anyone know of markets/groceries/etc. in the Rockford, IL area that sells Matcha? I had hoped to find some at Woodman's and/or Cost Plus, but I fear that I may have to trek to a Whole Foods or something like that.

BEST BREAKFAST EXPERIENCE WANTED!

Yeah, I've gotta throw in a second for Wishbone. I'm a big fan of their breakfast & lunch.

This is my summer of canned beer

LaCrosse Lager is a must for any canned beer extravaganza.

My itemized tacqueria "best-of" list, national chains included

I've always found Chipotle's steak to be considerably better than Qdoba's. That said, I agree with Eat Nopal - if you can't find better food than the chains in a big city, there's a problem. Of course, Rockford's "best-of" Mexican is perenially Taco Bell, but that's (a) Rockford and (b) not exactly a clean survey.

port of subs vs togos vs blimpie vs cousins etc?

whew. I thought maybe they just hid the soup when they saw me approach the building.

I have to eat at Maggiano's (moved from LA)

I nominate this for Maggiano's new ad campaign: "Come for the minestrone, stay for the music."

Favorite Beer in America?

Has anyone had the re-released Celis line? I used to drink all of their beers and toured the brewery about 10 years ago, but learned that they had shut down at some point. I learned a while back that they had been purchased and just last weekend saw a POP display with a re-rollout for the whole line. I'm curious whether the recipes are the same of if tinkering has occurred.

Noodles and Company?

I've generally been satisfied with my trips to the Madison locations. Some of the dishes are pretty eh, but the Japanese Pan Noodles and the Thai dish are generally pretty good. I've noticed that the beef (if you choose to add it) hasn't been as good lately, though. It's worth going to but not necessarily worth going out of your way for.

port of subs vs togos vs blimpie vs cousins etc?

I don't know if it's just the local Quizno's shops, but I'm pretty sick of going in the evening hoping for soup and finding the tureens empty and getting cleaned for closing up at SEVEN O'CLOCK. The POS website doesn't look like they're anything out of the ordinary, but you never know.

Togos and Cousins have been around our area for the last few years but neither has ever thrilled me that much. With a few good local sandwich shops here, I find it very hard to make room for any sub chain besides Quizno's. Port, I'm not familiar with.

It could be worse. It IS Maggiano's and not the Olive Garden. I know what you mean, though - it's frustrating when you rotate dining choices among a group of friends and your turn only comes up once every 7 or 8 meals and you go nuts trying to break the cycle of trips to Chili's and Outback Steakhouse. ugh.

Sun View Market

Does anyone in the Chicago area go to Sun View Market? We're getting one in Rockford (if it ever opens, that is) and was just curious what to expect. As far as I know, there are only a couple of other locations and they're both somewhere in the Chicagoland area. Any input would be appreciated.

mmminneapolis,mmmilwaukee,mmmadison

The brats at Miller Park are certainly fine, but I think the Polish and Italian are even better. Most of the bars that I like in Madison are within a block or two of the capitol building, so if you stay close to there you'll be well set.

Who are the main wine writers in Chicago

The Tribune has a food blog now at www.chicagotribune.com/stew. I know Bill Daley is listed as being active on there, I'm sure they'll have other wine folk.

Spartan Pizzeria - Good Enough?

I think a place would have to have a dirt floor and standing water for me to pass up 89 cent cans of beer.

Taco Bell breakfast?

Taco John's breakfast is much better than one would expect. Worth a shot if in the area and leaning toward fast food breakfast.

Janesville, WI - Excellent Mexican - El Jardin

I'm a big fan of El Jardin. Their ceviche always tastes very, very fresh and has a great flavor. I think the waitstaff enjoys watching stupid gringos overestimate their tolerance for hot food. I am one such stupid gringo.

Not exactly right around the corner, but El Molcajete in Belvidere, IL has good (and very reasonable) Mexican too. Los Portales in Rockford is worth checking out too.

Beloit, WI - Hansen's Tavern - CLOSED

hooray! this is truly good news. I've spent a lot of Saturday afternoons enjoying a burger & onion rings at Hanson's.

How Are Nonalcoholic Beer and Wine Made?

I always thought non-alcoholic beer was the work of the devil.
