Baru?

I'll have to agree with Overweight's assessment. We stopped in about a month ago. We had several tapas plates, including the tuna tartar, which was literally inedible (to their credit, they did take it off the bill). Our major complaint was the price/value equation, which we found to be quite out of balance. There's just nothing at Baru that we found to justify the pricing or bring us back again. For tapas, Vega is so far superior to Baru that it's not even worth the discussion.

Sunday brunch / Itinerary

Agreed. Dante's is great for brunch. If you want the FQ, you might want to try Cafe Amelie, or Marigny Brasserie in the Marigny. Stella! for dinner is well worth checking out.

New Restaurant

One can only hope it is better than the post-K incarnation of Santa Fe, which managed in a few months to utterly destroy the good will built up by the previous owners for years. Caveat Emptor!

Breakfast (and bed) help needed in Savannah

Travelling to Savannah this October for my 40th. It'll be the wife and I's third straight fall trip, but we need some recommendations for a cool bed & breakfast. Location, location, location, of course. Any suggestions?

Report-Camillia Grill, Mandina's and Sucre

Sucre last night...I wish as much attention had been paid to the product as to the branding. The place looks so darn slick, and it is clearly having no trouble reeling in the customers, but I found the desserts uninspired. Fortunately, the experience was preceded by dinner at Dick and Jenny's and pre-drink and appetizer at One on Hampson street. Both very nice.

Best Burger in NOLA?

Not to mention being the unquestioned best jazz club in the city! (but, for some reason a terrible wine place...always has been, and I suppose it always will be)

Advice on Peristyle?

G,

We ate Saturday, and Mike was indeed our server. What an interesting guy. Excellent wine list, and very inventive dishes, but the overall service was uneven and the base of the entrees was unremarkable. For example, I had a very unusual tuna in a lemon sauce with peas, non-sour sour crean, and Louisiana caviar. The pairing of ingredients was unique and harmonious, but the tuna itself was overcooked. Overall, a good restaurant, but not a great one. I'd rank it a notch below others in the same price category ($175+ for dinner) such as Bayona, Stella, etc

French Quareter restaurant with great food that has a courtyard.

Agreed. Kevin, I don't know where you are, but it's like a blast furnace in NOLA right now. If you are determined, I'd also suggest the beautiful courtyard at Cafe Amelie. I love the crab cakes there...but I love them more in October than June

Help. July 4 a disaster for chowhounds!

Try Alberta on Magazine. Intimate and romantic. A newcomer, but a very fine restaurant. I'll also be the third to suggest Marigny Brasserie. Very good food, and the most wine-centric place in the Marigny.

Napoleon House has an interesting room upsatairs if you're thinking of a party event with passed foods and etc, rather than a sit-down dinner.

Just had lunch at Willie Mae's

Yes, I believe one of the ladies I met was her granddaughter. And yes, the veal chop was on the menu.

Just had lunch at Willie Mae's

Arrived at 11:00 anticipating potential crowd. Until about 10 minutes before leaving, we were the only people there. The fried chicken was outstanding, but part of the vibe of the place pre-K was the great mix of people. Hopefully, that will return soon. I was interested to learn that Willie Mae herself has now retired. This was news I'd not heard reported previously. The staff was extremely polite and welcoming, however. They are open for lunch only, from 11:00-3:00 Mon-Fri. They will open on Saturdays when special events are occurring in the city. I must admit that I am perplexed by the lack of media attention on the reopening. However, I am also full of fried chicken at the moment, and that is a very good thing.

A very nice breakfast

Impromptu brunch at Cafe Atchafalaya Sunday. Remodeled 13 months ago with a great look and feel. We had a gulf fish omelet in a habanero sauce and pulled pork and poached egg atop a grit cake, both of which were very good. The food was certainly as good as that at Dante's or Elizabeth's. Also, very good coffee, an essential for any breakfast place. Finally, every member of the staff we encountered was professional and positive, going out of their way to thank us for choosing their restaurant. Given that we'd visited on a whim after a morning walk on the levee and looked more than a little like something the cat dragged in, this was particularly gratifying. In short, a charming place that I highly recommend.

Quick NOLA trip report.

I second that emotion...Mulate's is a complete waste of time and $$$. Tujague's, while not in the same class as some of the best restaurants in the city, is still an authentic dose of old New Orleans, IMHO

Staying at 214 Rue Royale - suggestions?

You must have a drink at the Carousel Bar in the Monteleone. Also on the must do list is a drink at the Napoleon House, St Louis and Chartres. You have an embarassment of options from there: Seafood @GW Fins, Oysters @Acme, Fine Dining @Bayona, great breakfast @Petunia's. Great Italian @Irene's, classic lunch @Galatoire's...I'm sure others can and will give you many more suggestions! More specifically, what vibe/types of places are you seeking?

Vintner Dinners

Bill,

Thanks for the feedback.

The dinner was of course last night, and the wines were from Foley and Lincourt of Santa Barbara. We tasted a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, two Pinots, a Cab, a Shiraz, and an Italian sparkling dessert wine. I must say that we thought the pairings, and the food quality, were fantastic.

There were passed canapes, including a terrific foie gras, scallops, a trio of very interesting tomato dishes (paired with the pinots), roulades of pheasant, veal chops, and an interesting dessert.
I can certainly understand your negative review. Had I taken my wife for a special occaision and been on the receiving end of the same service, I'd feel the same way. However, I am pleased to say that our experience was far more pleasant. We had a terrific evening, and we left feeling we got good value for the $125 per person.
On another note, I agree with you and I am more than a little surprised that there's been no discussion of the various dinners on this board. Anyone else out there attended the Windsor and have an alternate take? Any reviews of any of the other dinners?

La Petite Grocery

Certainly much wine was lost in the storm, and I have not been to Petite, but I've seen very nice wine lists at Cuvee, Emerils, and Bayona, just to name a few. Even as a local, I have to agree that after two years, unless your standard is verticals of Margaux or Petrus, a good wine list is a reasonable fine-dining expectation.

New Breakfast Place?

Petunias: love it, if you get there early enough
Oak Street: funky, cash only, live piano, nice place
Refuel: modern vibe, great coffee
Elizabeth's: I like it very much post-K
Slim Goody's: I agree, laid back, good food, friendly service
Eat: Nice new place; good grillades & grits
La Peniche: once one of my favorites, has seriously slipped post-K
Rosie's 24/7: one of the rare "I won't return places"

Vintner Dinners

Anyone attending a NOWFE Vintner Dinner next Wednesday? I will be at the Grill at the Windsor Court, my first vintner dinner, and my first time in that restaurant in 18 years. I'm curious for any input on vintner dinners in general and specifically how the Windsor Court has been recently. Also, would love to see some feedback next Thursday on any of the other dinners.

atmospheric patio dining in french quarter/marigny for lunch?

Cafe Amelie has one of the nicest courtyards in the Quarter. They are in the 900 block of Royal, across from the Cornstalk Fence Hotel. Check to be sure they're open at the time/day you want to go.
