Red's Savoy Pizza - Uptown Minneapolis

Galooney's will be missed. I loved getting their pizza with garlic and feta on it - pungency at its best.

Jfood's Nook (MSP) Experience - Huh?

But if you know that Mondays are off days....why spend the money then? It ought not be that way, but it often is...that's reality.

But the Monday thing doesn't really apply to burger joints. It's more for high end restaurants. It's sort of why some high end places were closed on Monday - they needed a day off, and the purveyors have crap offerings. Not the case for a place that makes stuff in house or sells frozen food.

Best Take-Out Chow Mein in Minneapolis?

Evergreen - hands down.

Pad Thai in Minneapolis

I always get really suspicious of the reddish colored pad thai sauces. The commercial stuff that comes in a bottle is essentially a ketchup, and the couple of places I have had the reddish sauce in restaurants in town have used the stuff from a bottle.

I have not tried the pad thai at Bangkok Thai Deli, so I can't really judge it, but my first instinct is nervousness. Since Anne seems to have good taste in everything else she talks about, I'm interesting in giving it a try.

Jfood's Ice Cream Tour (MSP) Continues - Sebastian Joes

The one flavor of SJ's that I have always been most impressed with is their pumpkin ice cream, which I assume is seasonal - fall/winter only. It's better than the other places' pumpkin flavors.

Minneapolis Restaurant with Good Asparagus Dishes?

Evergreen occasionally has a terrific asparagus stir fry.

MSP - Burger Jones opens today

This is why I don't visit a restaurant within the first couple of months of opening. It's always best to wait for them to get the kinks out. I'll bet by the end of the summer, many of the management issues won't be an issue.

Chow from MPLS to Chicago

Taking a road trip from MPLS to Chicago, through Madison not Milwaukee. I tried searching for previous threads on this - I'm sure there've been a few - but had no luck.

So, I'm in need of one good recommendation for something chowish and cheapish for lunch on the trip down. Ideas? I've always done fast food before.

TIA

MSP - Burger Jones opens today

Bottled water is $2.75, too. I can see $5 for a shake, and $9 for the alcoholic ones. But some of the low-end drinks are clearly overpriced.

MSP - Burger Jones opens today

Bulldog NE, where the burgers are really good, is $11.

You nailed it though - since the prices are running in line with 112, et all - that's the level of quality I expect.

MSP - Burger Jones opens today

Oh, and the Porter and Fry burger is $14.

High for burgers? Maybe, but not out of line with other places serving high-end burgers. The price certainly won't keep me away - the question is the quality of the burger.

And a $5 shake is nothing, really. I think that's a pretty average price.

I'm going to give them a couple of months before I try it. Let them work out the kinks. That will be the true test, then.

MSP - Burger Jones opens today

You go to Bulldog and pay $11 (I think) for burger and fries. Order of fries at BJ is $3, and the burger is $7 (depending on cheese). Prices are about the same.

Good french fries in MSP?

I second mentions of The Nook, Vincent, 112, Bulldog NE, The Weinery, and a couple of others.

I also really enjoy the sweet potato fries at Herkimer, and while I mostly am not enthused about Yum!, they go have good fries.

I also love the fries at Town Talk Diner.

More help for jfood from MSP Hounds

I would agree with TDQ that the tables at TTD are really close together. The loudness and the closeness of that place aren't cause for me to skip it or not recommend it, though. I think it's just worth it.

Minneapolis - Cinco de Mayo thoughts?

I really like Los Ocampo too, and it's probably better suited for lunch but the atmosphere isn't as festive. I eat there often - very chowish.

Masa and Barrio are both excellent.

Minneapolis - Cinco de Mayo thoughts?

Pancho Villa is the best SoMPLS option, IMHO. Margaritas are great, good specials, festive atmosphere.

Burger Jones [MSP]

The sign in the window says May 17 (or is it 19?). I am excited to try this place out - I love a good burger.

MSP farmers markets

For those interested, the Midtown Farmer's Market opens this Saturday.

MSP farmers markets

It was pretty dead at the MPLS market on Saturday. There were a few vendors selling stuff that had been shipped in, and several vendors with potted rhubarb. Lots of potted plants and seedlings. Some cut flowers. All the food stands were up and running, as well the meat/egg/dairy vendors.

Outside of that, nothing. Maybe a 1/4 of the stalls were filled.

Jfood returns to 112 Eatery (MSP)

It's true of most good restaurants that Monday is not the night to go. It's the day off for the seasoned crew, and the purveyors don't usually bring fresh stock until Tuesday so Monday is sort of leftover day.

COTTAGE CHEESE-MSP

Wal-Mart has it. Yeah, I said it - Wal-Mart.

MSP-Porcini Mushrooms

I have never found fresh porici mushrooms in MPLS, but dried ones are easy to find.

I appreciate a worthwhile difference between fresh porcini and fresh portabello mushrooms - at least, the few times I was lucky enough to have them.

I've bought fresh porcini this time of the year, albeit in NYC. I am pretty sure they were imported, given the price.

If anyone ever sees fresh porcini in MPLS, please alert me!

Good food near Burnsville, MN

I haven't been to Stefano's on 13 in years...how is the place these days? I remember liking it back in the day, and drove past it a week or so ago and was mildly surprised to find that it was still in business.

Japanese Knife Sharpening - Twin Cities

I've been happy with Kitchen Window. They offer a knife sharpening clinic where you can learn how to do it yourself, which I recommend. Carl Antholz teaches it, and he knows his stuff.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to Lunds or Byerly's. The way they sharpen knives ruins them.

Walk-ins at 112 [MSP]

I have actually never had a reservation when I've eaten there. To be clear, though, I've either gotten there at opening, taken advantage of a cancellation, or have been there late at night (10 or later).

112 Eatery (MSP)

Burger and foie gras pasta are my faves.

Best Bloody Mary in MSP

I am a big fan of the Bloody Verde at Town Talk. While not strictly a Bloody Mary, it carries the same concept.

It's made of pureed tomatillas, spices, tequila instead of vodka, and a little Belgian beer. It is very, very tasty - I prefer it to a bloody mary.

Rites of Spring MSP

I don't really celebrate spring - in an epicurial sense, anyway - until the farmers market opens. Can't wait for that - April 25th!

True Thai - MSP

I can tell you to skip the pad thai and the cashew appetizer. The pad thai is serviceable but not outstanding. The cashew app is not spicy - just warm. Chiang Mai Thai's cashews are much better - in fact, it's the only thing there I consistently like.

MSP- Need a recommendation: inexpensive place - good food.

It was at one point - don't know if they still are.
