good mexican restaurant (not taqueria) in san mateo

hello, where is a really good mexican restaurant in san mateo that is not a taqueria, and good for a group of 6 on friday?

Challah

i second B&H!

Edible Insects in NYC?

when andrew zimmern/bizarre foods did their NYC segment, they featured gene rurka's farm in new jersey. he is the guy that creates the menus for the explorers club dinner. i know its not exactly what you were looking for, but maybe he could help you out..

Grand Sichuan. Did we go to the wrong location?

my favorite grand sichuan is on canal and chrystie, and i dont think its affiliated with the others in the city. dan dan noodles are incredibly fiery. the best thing is you can get sichuan hot pot too, but beware, it is ridiculously spicy! get the half and half.
i used to go to the one in chelsea all the time, which is great for the area, but some things are hit or miss. and the waitresses are not very friendly.

Black Hound Bakery, which cake to get?

i love the busy bee cake, but you have to be in the mood - it is incredibly heavy and sweet. its not for everyone though, i had it at party and some people thought it was too much.

Help - Need child's birthday cake that will please adults

i second La Bergamote on Ninth Ave (around 21st or 22nd). i've had their black forest cake many times for bdays. it is absolutely delicious. but the liquered cherries are maybe not suitable for a kid's party.

also, laboratorio del gelato makes custom cakes, but they are all gelato or sorbet with no cake..you pick up to 4 flavors, which are then layered with chocolate or nuts and then coated in chocolate or vanilla.

Hottest horseradish

the pickle guys on essex have fresh horseradish as well.

turkey burger?

where can you find a really good turkey burger?

paris restaurants in the 1st & 2nd arrondisements?

What are some recommendations for delicious, casual restaurants in the 1st and 2nd arrondisements (30 euros or less for dinner)? Some places I’ve been are Ardoise, L’escure, Le Souffle, and a few places on Place du Marche st. Honore, so something along those lines. Thanks!

Best nolita / east soho takeout

best sandwiches by far are from Parisi Bakery on mott b/t spring and kenmare. they recently raised their prices but still are super cheap, humongous, and delicious.

perbacco, quince, delfina, & canteen?

Thank you all for your help!
I think i'm going to go with Canteen and Delfina. Canteen sounds very interesting, and I was supposed to go to Delfina the last time I was visited, but cancelled my reservation at the last minute. I will definitely check out Quince next time.

perbacco, quince, delfina, & canteen?

hello, i'll be visiting SF from NY soon, and was wondering which 2 of these 4 places i should pick? many thanks for your help!

chinatown recommendations please

the spicy noodle soup was fantastic. its exactly what i crave, all the time.. very funny - there were about 5 other people in the place, no one was talking, all you could hear were slurping noises. thanks for the great rec.

chinatown recommendations please

yum, i LOVE spicy soup too. i'm going to try it tonight. will probably pass out from heat exhaustion..

Best iced coffee?

for decaf i love the iced coffee at cafe gitane. it tastes extra roasted and smoky.
88 orchard is nice cause they use coffee ice cubes.
there is a tiny place on bowery below canal that has iced half coffee, half tea. delicious!

chinatown recommendations please

your rec's sound wonderful! can't wait to try wing huang, moon house, and super taste. how does super taste compare to eastern noodles?

HELP! My BFF's b-day and she wants Benihana!!

maybe Gyu Kaku? The food is OK (better than Benihana), but it is definitely good for groups and birthdays.

Where's the cheapest place to buy fresh herbs?

manhattan fruit exchange in chelsea market as said above and also any of the open markets in chinatown (there are several around grand and bowery/chrystie) are super cheap.

Best M&M Cookies

Veselka on 2nd ave and 9th st has them

gascogne vs. la luncheonette?

thanks, i will definitely try gascogne soon and be sure to sit in the garden.. as for la lunch's ambiance, i find it to be pretty basic, but quirky and cozier compared to everything else on 10th ave. (but i can see how the room in the back toward the bathroom might be off putting).

Can Good Lunch Be Found Around 25th and 6th?

for dessert, if you like Yolato, there's one on 7th ave and 27th st. in a weirdly shared space. i must say, the yoggi flavor has really grown on me!

Chinese (Malaysian?) Curry Noodle Soup

i love the curry mee with young tau foo from nyonya (though i haven't had it in any other places in the city to compare with). in addition to stuffed tofu, they include a piece of stuffed eggplant, stuffed bitter melon (not a fan of that), and my favorite - a stuffed green hot pepper. is this typical for the dish? anyone have recs for where else serves a decent bowl?

gascogne vs. la luncheonette?

i've passed by gascogne a million times but have never eaten there. it gets a lot of love on this board, especially if you can sit in their garden..

i've gone to la luncheonette at least 10 times, and i've always been more than satisfied with their solid, classic fare.

how do the two compare?

Gertel's closing June 22

I stopped by Gertel's yesterday, and they had just put up signs saying it will be closing on June 22. They are relocating to Williamsburg.

Dinner Post Bowery Ballroom

Katz's!

See's Molasses Chips

does anyone else love these as much as i do?? i can't stop eating them! other things i can't get enough of - the california brittle (i love the saltiness), butterscotch squares (satisfyingly grainy and brown sugary), and butterchews (sooo buttery and chewy).

sadly there are no see's in NYC, but everytime someone visits or i go back to the west coast, i hoard boxes and boxes. yes i know they mailorder, but i love the whole experience -the process of picking and choosing each piece you want in a box, the cheerful ladies and their crisp white uniforms, and of course their free samples they liberally dole out!

all you people who have See's nearby are so lucky!

Good or Great Pub Food in Chelsea

i've never been, but when the weather is nice, there is always a crowd at the half king - tenth ave at 23rd st.

Dessert/Coffee near Bowery/Prince?

cafe gitane on mott and prince. i don't know how their dessert is but their coffee is good.
