Restaurant recommendations for an upcoming visit
Ok, last but not least: can anyone recommend a bar nearish to Union Square where about 10 of us could meet for happy hour?? One friend has recommended Harry Denton's Starlight Lounge -- but it seems very swishy for after work. Other recommendations?

Thanks, everyone - this is really helpful, and gives me a lot of interesting options! For those who asked, the gallery is near Union Square, thus making Zuni a perfect hit for a smaller group, or anything in the Ferry Terminal.
Oh, and I do want to try Smuggler's Cove - someone else mentioned that. Where is it?
New Bern restaurant recommendations?
I don't think anyone has posted about this since early last summer, so I'll ask for 2012! Does anyone have any restaurant recommendations in New Bern these days? BF and I are running away for a quick overnight, and in need of a nicer dinner and any old place for lunch. Last year's favorite appeared to be Persimmons. Is it still? Are there other places we should consider? Thanks!

Thanks, KelsEats! Is Aziza in North Beach? If so, I think my sister mentioned them as well.
Restaurant recommendations for an upcoming visit
Hello, Bay Area Chowhounds!
I'm going to SF for a conference in April and I'm already planning my meals. Three things:
1. Is Zuni Cafe still yummy? When my sister lived there several years ago, Zuni was one of our habitual stops and I have delicious memories. Is it still as lovely as I remember?
2. Any newer recommendations I should try to hit for good meals or cocktails? (Recognizing that this is a huge question...)
3. Specifically, I am thinking about a place where 10 of us could go to celebrate a friend's gallery opening.
Looking forward to your ideas!
Mardis Gras dinner party
We are far enough south (and have a large Mexican/Caribbean community) that you can actually find mirleton in the grocery store. With a heavy start and heavy main, I'm actually making a roasted mirleton, red pepper salad. It's not traditional, for sure, but with traditional ingredients.
Mardis Gras dinner party
The dip was actually inspired by Cochon's lunch menu yesterday! It's like your basic crab dip, but with an added kick.
And thanks for all the suggestions! Just what was needed!
Mardis Gras dinner party
I'm throwing a dinner party for 10 for Mardis Gras next weekend, and I'm seeking some first course inspiration. Hors d'oeuvres will be crab and jalapeno dip, alongside some pickled veggies. The main will be jambalaya. Dessert will probably gateau de sirop. But I'm at a loss for a first course that fits the theme, isn't too too heavy and perhaps even a palate cleanser between heavy hors d'oeuvres and heavy main.
Oysters mignonette and salad?
Pan barbecued shrimp?

Tracy's Deli - Chapel Hill
Thanks for the recommendation! Ever since I moved here I've craved a basic, not house-cured-pickled anything, old-fashioned deli. Not that I don't love the fancy places too, but sometime you just want a turkey and havarti sandwich on a kaiser roll. Or just a half Reuben and a delicious house-made chicken tortilla soup. Good, but well-made comfort food. I'll be taking colleagues back.
What bourbon are you drinking these days?
What a great question! I drink George Dicket No. 17 at home for mixing with ginger ale (Schweppes, please). I have Eagle Rare and Woodford Reserve on hand for drinking straight (after dinner). When I'm out and ordering a Manhattan, my preferences are Eagle Rare or Bulleit (in those bars that carry them), Maker's Mark or Knob Creek otherwise.
I had Pappy Van Winkle after dinner at Herb Saint in New Orleans, on the recommendation of the waiter, and I'll be forever grateful.
Asian restaurants in Cary
Thanks for your suggestions. Keep 'em coming! Some friends I met also suggested BombayBeijing (http://www.mybombaybeijing.com/), and last night my BF and I checked out the Lotus Leaf Cafe, which is my favorite Thai restaurant so far. Spicy! Fresh! Yay!

Asian restaurants in Cary
I have cause these days to venture forth from the food mecca of Durham and Chapel Hill to Cary, which I know isn't exactly a food desert, but my boyfriend hasn't been particularly adventurous up until this point. I'm psyched to explore the Asian restaurants in Cary. Do folks have particular recommendations?
What happened to La Russa's?
I had a hankering for an Italian sub yesterday (and some homemade cannelloni), so on a whim I headed to La Russa's in Meadowmont -- only to discover it had closed! Admittedly I hadn't been there in a couple of years, but I liked knowing that there was a source of good basic Italian sandwiches and frozen food to take home (even if I rarely took advantage!).
Does anyone know what happened? And where do you go for a good Italian deli?
TOO MUCH CUCUMBER
And boy are they! I tried the garlic dill pickle receipt here , and for some reason, while the flavor was terrific, they were too salty to me. I just did BIttman's "real" kosher dill recipe (no vinegar), and again, terrific flavor, but I think I prefer some vinegar in my pickles. It looks like I'll have an opportunity to try more next week, so I can come to some happy medium...
And thank you all for your suggestions! I don't have a good cuke soup recipe, so that's really helpful. I have just gone through a round of gazpacho. I should also recommend something that I picked up at a local restaurant here: cukes (seeded and thinly sliced on the diagonal) and tomatoes (thin wedges), tossed with olive oil and red wine vinegar, salt and pepper, topped with crumbled good-quality goat cheese and whatever fresh herbs you have at hand. Heaven.
TOO MUCH CUCUMBER
Ironically, the Kirby (pickling) cukes are not nearly as prolific as the basic slicing cukes! I'm enjoying testing different pickling formulas tho. And I must remember next year to plant dill next to the cukes...
TOO MUCH CUCUMBER
With a new sunny garden this year, I decided to try to grow cucumber. OH MY GOD! Every time I go out there, I'm surprised by a huge behemoth of a cucumber that wasn't there two days ago. I'm beginning to run out of cucumber ideas! What do you do with huge cukes? Does the flavor change as they get so large?
Also, what are your favorite cucumber recipes? I usually make Asian cucumber salad (rice vinegar, sugar, red pepper) and variations on Greek salad. These are lovely, but getting repetitive.
Thank you!
Visiting Seattle - where should we eat?
Thanks, all. Sorry I can't be more specific with my questions - I'm just not that tied to one direction or another. I do eat meat, but I also love seafood. I like fine dining, but I like a good diner. I'm staying near Pike Place, but I have a car. Happily, we're staying next to Lola's and Dahlia bakery, which can take a girl a good ways.
Visiting Seattle - where should we eat?
Hello Seattle Hounders! I'm coming to Seattle this week for the first time in a decade, and I'm seeking recommendations for food and drink. I'll be staying downtown, although I will have a car. Is there a place (either fancy or plain) that we shouldn't miss? How about a good cocktail bar?
Gratefully, Tarheel Hounder
Can New Orleans Pan-barbecued Shrimp be <shudder> lightened up??
Wow, this is all amazingly helpful. Obviously the only thing to do is to keep making and testing!
(Oh, and yes, the real thing must must must have butter, I agree without reservation. But I simply can't do that for a regular ole weeknight supper.)
Thanks everyone!
Can New Orleans Pan-barbecued Shrimp be <shudder> lightened up??
I saw this and was thinking it might do the trick. Same amount of fat, but a slightly healthier option. Maybe I'll give it a try.
Can New Orleans Pan-barbecued Shrimp be <shudder> lightened up??
I accidentally made too much spice mix for the pan barbecued shrimp that I made for a dinner party last night, and I thought it would be fun to make again for a weeknight supper this week -- but maybe without all the butter?? (How appropriate that the recipe I use is from this months' COTM author, Paul Prudhomme.) Does anyone have any suggestions for reducing the 1-1/2 sticks of butter?
Cooks Illustrated Chewy Brownies
For those who have found these disappointing, have you tried Hershey's Best Brownies recipe? http://www.hersheys.com/recipes/recipes/detail.asp?id=5008 It is my never-fail, go-to brownie recipe. I was startled how easy it is. (I generally use better cocoa tho.) The recipe recommends an icing too; I don't think it's necessary, they're just fine on their own.
German sausage in the Triangle or Triad?
Report back from Halgo's: a delightful discovery although sadly not a stop for German sausage. Great for Polish kielbasa tho! And who knew there were so many kinds of pierogis? And the owner are delightful themselves - the missus makes all their polish baked goods right there. I came home with a nice smoky keilbasa and potato-mushroom perogi for dinner one night this week.
German sausage in the Triangle or Triad?
Ooh! Halgo's sounds like a good field trip for a rainy day like today! Right after I posted I went to the Durham Farmer's market and saw that one of the farmer's (Fickle Creek, maybe?) also had brats.
Thanks!
Any other suggestions, y'all?
German sausage in the Triangle or Triad?
I had lunch the other day at Milltown in Carrboro, and while I am generally bored by their limited and unchanging menu, I always enjoy their German sausage plate. The sausage is distinct and flavorful, like the sausages I would buy from Polish or German butchers in Chicago. It's coming up on October and I'm thinking of an Oktoberfest dinner at home. When I asked where they got their sausages, the waiter said they were from the Bavarian Sausage Company in Greensboro. I can't find any listing for such a company online, so I'm turning to this august community: Have you ever heard of such a company? Does anyone know of a local source for good German sausages?
BBQ on or near 64 and the Outer Banks?
Hey, thanks for this recommendation! After driving around in circles for awhile, I finally found my way there. Excellent 'cue, but even better sauce. I brought home a pint. And of course, just getting off the highway and seeing the country is a worthy adventure!
BBQ on or near 64 and the Outer Banks?
Yup - I have them jotted down. I love getting off the highway in Eastern NC in search of 'cue. Thanks!

And thanks for the hint about Blackbeard's - I found it on the map, and it looks like it would be a good stop along the way.
