Guppy Teahouse in Cerritos (my first review!)

I know this is an old post, but I just had Brick Toast from guppy's for the first time and I LOVED it. so yummy! They still have the huge portions of shaved ice, but we didn't get one.
The service wasn't very efficient. We spent a total of 1 1/2 hours there.

las vegas group dining abt. $25 pp, ON THE STRIP

I don't know if you've considered, but my girlfriends and I went for a bachelorette party and made reservations a day ahead at the Rum Jungle restaurant in Mandalay Bay. I don't remember if the food was good, but it's not family style and we all spent around $25 for food only. Oh and there were about 20 of us. The place is really nice too.

What's With The 6 PM Line Outside Sprinkles?

ok, i'll speak for the people in the long line. (even though i've never waited in a line for a cupcake)
if you take away the overrated-ness and take away the fact that there might be something better down the street, you've got a sweet delicious cupcake that you didn't have to bake yourself and you've got something to do like wait in a line instead of sitting at home.

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)? [old]

For seven years I was a Call Center Trainer/Customer Service Rep for a catalog company that specializes in supply for museums/galleries/photographers such as mat board, framing, archiving etc. Being very stressed everyday turned me into a chowhound. All I wanted to do after 10 hours a day of hearing customers tell me they want to kill me because their frame wasn't in stock made me want to come home to something good to eat.

let's share a cooking "trick"

my cooking trick is a bit ghetto but when i fry stuff in a pan the oils get everywhere all over my stove. so what i do is i save all the junk mail i get and tape them all over my stove whenever i fry. clean up is easy. i just remove all the junk mail and the stove is clean!

What to order at a Thai restaurant?

i usually order the BBQ pork noodles dried. It comes with soup or dried. and then I ask them to add the moo krob (roasted crispy pork) to the dish. I drench it with fish sauce and vinegar. delicious! just like in thailand!

Where can I find Prosecco?

I checked at my local supermarkets and the workers don't even know what prosecco is. So I went down to Bevmo and the worker there didn't have any clue as to what prosecco is. He said they didn't have any after checking the computer and checking the back of the store. So where can I find some prosecco? Also, I wasn't even sure if this stuff is sold at specialty stores.

What should I infuse next?

My cousin just made an infused vodka with salted plums. I really like salted plums, so this vodka was really good to me. I know there are different versions of salted plums, and my cousin used the one found in asian markets. It's color is pinkish/peachy. Anyway, he filled 1/4 of the bottle with the salted plums and added some sugar (don't know how much) and let it sit for one week. If you like ginger, lemongrass and kaffir lime, I think you'd like this. For the drink he made, he just mixed the vodka with club soda and squeezed some lemon in it. If you try it, let me know if you like it!

The first time I tasted durian was when I went to Thailand. OMG. I was in heaven. The piece I had was so creamy. SO creamy. just so wonderful and light. I would describe the flavor as a creamy pineapple.

I have old bread & want to make croutons, but my oven is broken.

so I just made my croutons!
I sauteed them in some butter and seasoned with salt, pepper and garlic powder.
I will be topping my roasted tomato soup with these croutons!
they're so good! yum!

Las Vegas Buffets, 2007

I agree w/you on some of those places going downhill. I used to go to Rio & Bellagio
but my favorite is still Cravings at the Mirage. They have the usual international fare like other buffets, I just think the food here is better. A little secret if you do go, in the asian section, they serve roasted pork and peking duck. You have to ask for it. It's not laid out like all the other food.

If I came to visit...

if you came to pomona, Ca. i'd take you:

to eat at a taqueria. there are tons of little taco and burrito shops here.

to a pan bakery to get some fresh pan, flan and chicharron.

to the curb in front of my house. around 5:15 pm a man carts around a shopping cart selling durritos (wheat chips) splashed w/lemon juice & chili sauce, a corn topped w/mayo, butter, parm cheese and chili, and a shaved ice---all for $1 each.

this is what pomona is all about! lol!

yes very italian and very good.
this place is perfect for a dinner setting because its dark inside and the bar is pretty big too. they serve alot of different wines. and signature house drinks.
this place seems a little sophisticated imo for the shopping plaza but they never give me any problems when i wear my flip flops inside.

there is a restaurant located in the spectrum shopping center called pizzaioli. its right behind chopsticks house/islands.
they make their own garlic-ranch dressing for their salads which is very good.
that's really the only thing i eat there but i often see people ordering the gnocchi and the antipasto sampler platters.

Hot Pot City mini-review

I just ate here today.
The meat was very good. We had two orders of the rib-eye and one order of short ribs @ $3 per plate. I used your suggestion of using the butter for the beef and it came out so tasty! We also made a soup with a veggie combo plate w/cabbage, corn, seaweed, tofu, and egg noodles and added a plate of jumbo prawns-including their heads! (5pcs-$4). I thought it was kind of plain. There were alot of sides including blood, dried fish, kim chee and spicy pickled cucumbers to name a few. These were $2/plate. We had the pickled cucumbers-which I really enjoyed.
Our total came out to $20 and some change.
I liked that we got to pick out our own food and control how much food we'd actually eat.
Overall, I enjoyed this place and would eat here again.

What to make with spring rolls?

my mom usually makes spring rolls bigger and heartier like you for a meal.
she makes a hot & spicy soup like a thai soup or the vietnamese canh chua to sip on while eating the rolls. i think its the perfect compliment to the fresh, cold rolls.

LIVE TO EAT. It's what we're here for right?

So I'm new to Chow and I use it alot to find places to eat. I usually make a decision based on what people write about their experiences.

I feel like I waste more time reading about some people having arguements about who's restaurant is better or "do you even know what authentic is?" than the actual food itself.

When someone poses the question: "What should I order here?" there should be suggestions right?

I thought this was a place were people talked about food - not if a person knows what authentic is or how much a person has eaten or if they even know how to eat a certain food or if they're even skilled or highly trained enough to eat.

Sometimes I'll want to write about food I've eaten but I'm almost afraid to because I don't want to get bombarded by replies saying, "You ate there?" um...yes I did!

If I'm wrong, please correct me. I don't want to leave this site!!
