Post Marathon- Dinner Party (Leg of Lamb)

I will def be adding dolmades and maybe some greek olives to the cheese plate. Hmm..the root vegetable idea is nice...

I think i will put my mom on dessert but use your pastry idea as back up.

Post Marathon- Dinner Party (Leg of Lamb)

I really love the brussel sprouts idea, I do love them and they would be easy to throw into the already hot oven at the last minute. Maye also do some cold roasted multi colored beets for added color. Hmm...

I may just go ahead and make small spinach triangles- which I am good at and everyone loves but will still think about that one.

I love both dessert ideas- my mom is a pastry chef so I will put her on that. If that does not work out then greek pastries it is!

Post Marathon- Dinner Party (Leg of Lamb)

I am hosting a post marathon party for my brother in law (who is running). He said not to worry about marathon related foods so I won't- but want to make it a special dinner. Being half greek, I want to greek it up a little bit without having it be too greek (does that make sense :))

There will be about 10 people

I was thinking of doing a nice chese plate with cured meets and crackers/olives just to have something to munch on when folks arrive. They will arrive aroun 4:30 and we will eat by 6:00. Is just cheese enough or should I do more hor- durves or something different. I have done just gourges before but with the big group I thought something platterish would be better so I thought of the cheese

For dinner:
Leg of Lamb (garlic, herb type of rub, nothingto fancy though)
Roasted Potatoes (any specific type better, I assume cooking times differ and I want them to cook with the lamb to get that great flavor
Pan Sauce for Lamb
Not 100% sure of the vegetable, its fall though so maybe a fall one. If not maybe string beans. Could use help/advice on the veggie

Dessert? I usually do whiskey with coffee and just put out ice cream or fruit and chocoalte but with such a large group I was thinking either some kind of cake or even a pumpkin pie. Any suggestions?

I want flavors to go together and I want everythingto taste good- with more of a focus on quality of ingredients and simpleness than fanciness. But at the end of the day we are all pretty fancy people :) who don't shy away from gourmet. I just don't want to try to hard and sacrifice quality and freshness

That was long! Any advice would be great!

Help! Need dessert for 25 people!

I doubt you are the only one bringing dessert so I would not really worry about people being lactose intolerant, etc... I think pastries/cookies from a really nice bakery is a great idea. If there is anyplace nearby that has award winning chocolate chip cookies. Everyone loves them (well almost everyone!) and they are inexpensive. I would not bring anything that could melt and I agree fruit/cheese could get expensive.

Bar in Red Hook

It really is quite lovely inside, a nice place to go and enjoy a relaxing drink. Totally worth checking out.

Bar in Red Hook

Botanica. I have only been there for drinks, I know they were going to have a small plates menu but not sure if they do.

Brown bag lunch?

Today I had a toasted tortilla with hummus, avocado, sprouts, spinach and cucumber. Sometimes I add a touch of harrissa (Tunisian hot sauce) to the hummus. It is good, filling and it holds up to traveling really well.

Moved in with fiance...what do I cook??

As someone who does most of the cooking I wanted to jump in. I do it by choice. If dinner is not made my boyfriend would be just as happy to order take out. Since I like to eat healthy meals and control what I put in my body, I prefer to have fish, veggies, etc... so I cook. He does the dishes and we share cleaning responsiblities.

I always have convenience foods ready so I can make something quick. Ex. pita or english muffin pizzas with salad (whole wheat pitas/english muffins, sauce, fresh mozz or goat cheese). No clean up and much better for you than delivery. BTW my sister's husband does 100% of the cooking.

Dinner in/near Red Hook/Carroll Gardens?

Good Fork is a great choice, but it is about a 20 minute walk. I love Red's Produce. They have spanish style tapas and a great wine list. I go there often since the are very reasonable. I would also suggest Ferdinanado's which is also a great value and has great Italian food.

Where can I buy a rooster?

I will check, I found a place that has fresh capon- which i a castrated rooster and can't figure out if it the same thing.

Where can I buy a rooster?

So is a capon and a rooster the same thing?

Where can I buy a rooster?

Thanks so much for the advice!

Where can I buy a rooster?

I need to buy a rooster for a special dinner I am cooking for my brother in law. We are making coq a vin and he really wants to make it with a rooster. I have done some research and I can not figure out where to buy one. Any suggestions? Looking in NYC area but will order one online if need be. Thanks! P.S we make it all the time with chicken, we just really want to try it with rooster.

What's off with my Thanksgiving Menu

Of course. Will post first thing tomorrow (don't have the recipe with me)

What's off with my Thanksgiving Menu

Thanks for all the great comments, I have some re-thinking to do.

What's off with my Thanksgiving Menu

I should have mentioned that the beets are going to be cold, your salad sounds very refreshing though.

What's off with my Thanksgiving Menu

Good suggestion, thanks. I don't really know how they fit in, just something we wanted to throw in and since the vegetarians attending do eat fish we thought it may be a nice touch. Does it sound too off?

What's off with my Thanksgiving Menu

I feel there is something off with my menu, can't quite put my finger on it. Cooking for 16 people. Breads, Appetizers and Desserts are going to be prepared by someone else. There are some semi-vegetarians attending. Any suggestions? Critics welcome. Thanks!

Great Chow Dinner around Red Hook Ikea?

The Red Hook Food Vendors at the Ballfields and The Good Fork are great choices.

Dieting Foodie??? (moved from General Topics)

I used to go to the gym more but get less done, now i really work out while i am there and only have to go 3 days a week to get the same result i used to get when i went 5-6 days a week.

I eat lots of fruits and veggies (always have) and eat only whole grains and lean protein. My problem has always been my cravings for nachos and pizza.

For pizza i take a thomas 100 calorie whole wheat english muffin and add tomatoe sauce, veggies and goat cheese. I eat it with a side salad for a quick meal and love it.

For nachos, I take two corn tortillas and cut them into pieces (100 calories total) and toast them in the oven. I then add black beans, soy jalepeno cheese (35 calories a slice, I usually use 2 slices), and then add lettuce, green hot sauce, jalepenos and plain greek yogurt at the end. It tastes so good, is portion controlled and you get your fix without sabotaging your diet.

My biggest problem is that I associate the pub with wings and nachos and once i have had a drink (or two) I lose all self control. I have to learn to go to a pub and have a drink without eating, or to eat something more sensible like a grilled chicken sandwhich.

Making rabbit stew, what to serve as an appetizer

You two make a great point. I think some spiced nuts or olives with some sparking wine (we always begin with sparkling wine when we meet anyway) is the way to go.

Thanks!

Making rabbit stew, what to serve as an appetizer

I am making rabbit stew this weekend, Rabbit Brittany (rabbit with red wine, mushrooms...). I usually just serve a few cheeses so that my guests have something to eat when they first arrive but was trying to think of other options since the stew seems heavy. My other go to would be shrimp cocktail which seems like a strange thing to mix with rabbit stew. Any suggestions would be great. I was thinking of serving the stew with crusty bread and following the meal with a light salad.

Thanks!

Trader Joes... Please, just ring up my groceries.

Thank you so much, you took the words right out of my mouth. I go to the Trader Joes on 14th street and I hate how annoying the cashiers are. I always stock up on soy nuggets and the cashier always assumes that i am vegan and they comment on how cool it is. Meanwhile i like my meat rare, i just happen to like soy nuggets. God those trader joes folks are ANNOYING.

What to do when the restaurant's out of your budget?

Well you if you do not want to be honest, why not just do some research and find an amazingly raved about restaurant closer to your price range that serves a cuisine that you know your friend will enjoy. Your friend will probably get why you made a new suggestion and will hopefully gracefully suggest going to your choice. Just say you have been meaning to try it.

Bill came- items were more expensive then they were on the menu

UPDATE: I just received the following email.

Dear Consumer:

DCA conducted an inspection of *************** on 10/4/07 the following was determined:

A violation was issued for failure to post service price posted

Thank you

** I bet the violation was much higher then the couple bucks they tried to jip me out of. That will teach them!

Bill came- items were more expensive then they were on the menu

So to update I reported them to Consumer Affairs and received an email that they were going to randomly inspect/check this and let me know the result. To me that was a good choice for me. I did not want to ruin a perfectly good morning with calling cops or risk now wanting to go back if i had so chosen. I now know that i will not return, a place like this does not deserve my business.

Bill came- items were more expensive then they were on the menu

You are right. Since the waiter had to go get the owner blah blah blah I felt he spent extra time, but now i am just making excuses. I get take out coffee in the morning and did not want them to think i was complaining about the price and being cheap. I thought if i left a bad tip the owner would assume i did it to punish the waiter for the increased price, not the lack of cheese. The total bill was so small that it is sometimes easy to add in an extra dollar or two without thinking about it. I do agree with you and won't do this again :)

Bill came- items were more expensive then they were on the menu

This morning i went to this little cafe with my boyfriend. I go there in the morning for a cap to go, which is $1.75. We got the menus and ordered 2 coffees ($1 each). If it matters this was in Brooklyn in a place a block or two from our house. We also got a muffin and egg sandwich. The food came out on the cold side and there was no cheese on the sandwich like we had specified. Whatever, we ordered two more coffees. I am completely aware that many places charge for an extra cup and was not surprised when four coffees showed up on the bill. I was surprised that the coffees were each $1.75. I mentioned to the waiter that the menu clearly states that they are $1 and he sent the owner over. The owner explained that they changed the prices and have not updated the menu. I explained to him that i ordered off the menu according to prices on it and expect to be charged that price. He changed them to $1.50 each. We paid it, left a generous tip (it was not the waiters fault, or was it) and left. I like the place but do not think I will go back. Now don't get me wrong the coffee was worth $1.75 and i would not have complained if the bill had not said $1, It is the principle.

Dieting Foodie??? (moved from General Topics)

I just recently found out that fiber one had aspartame in it and was very surprised. With so little calories, I was so excited. I would eat a breakfast of fiber one, skim milk and fresh fruit but be starving an hour or so later. Fake sugar tends to ignite my hunger. I now realize that if something is to good to be true it probably is.

Greek in Astoria?

Tavernas Tyclades (sp?) or Agnanti. I am greek, have lived in Astoria and have brought non-Greek out of towners and everyone loved everything. These places are heavy on the seafood. For 4 people be sure to remember that greek people eat family style. The prices at these places are very reasonable. Order a big salad a few dips and sides and a meat and fish dish or two. Everyone shares, you can try new things and it is super yummy. Get the grilled octopus!
