Toronto Hounds spending a week in Ottawa
Hi All,
My wife and I are spending a week in Ottawa in September. Any suggestions? We are open to all food types and ranges. We are thinking at least one high end dinner, but we are flexible.
Thanks in advance.
Celebration dinner in Collingwood
Someone mentioned catch 22. Is this a good rec? I've been hit and miss with the guy that reccommended it. Sometimes he's brilliant, sometimes...
Celebration dinner in Collingwood
Hi All,
I've decided to take my wife up to Collingwood this weekend as a last minute celebration for her birthday. Could someone reccommend a good place for a nice dinner for Saturday night?
Thanks.
Brunch tomorrow (Sunday) - any ideas?
I have to disagree with the above posters. Inspired by this thread, my wife and I headed over for a late brunch. The restaurant is nice and homey, but very crowded. I could have lived with that if the food was worthwhile. My wife had the poached eggs with salmon and it wasn't bad, but nothing special. I had the meatloaf sandwich and was severly dissapointed. The meatloaf had no texture at all and I don't know about the taste as it had so much barbeque sauce you couldn't taste anything else.
I will agree that the service was great. When I mentioned that I wasn't happy they took the sandwich off the bill without even having asked. That little bit of care and the many fine reviews posted here means there is a small chance I may go back some day for a second chance.
Revolution teas
Hi
My wife had a tea at Crush from a company called Revolution. We are looking for somewhere to purchase these retail, preferably in the downtown area.
Thanks
best breakfast joint in Toronto?
No one has mentioned KOS on Bathurst just south of Dupont. Hands down one of the best breakfasts in the city. Their homefries are worth every penny. And as an added bonus it's cheap so you don't need that many pennies.
tourist in Paris
Hi All,
I'm hoping for a little help, my wife and I are a couple of foodies from Toronto Canada who are going to be in Paris for a week in October.
We are reasonably adventurous and fairly high on the carnivore scale. We are looking to spend up to 40 euros per person, but less is certainly prefered and if it is something really special we'd be willing to go higher. Wine isn't important as neither of us drink.
So with that in mind:
Where should be go? What restaurants would be a sin to miss? What dishes should be be sure to order?
Thanks in advance,
Best saganaki in Toronto?
Omanyia has always done a good saganaki. They now have a second version on their new menu, it is feta coated in sesame seeds. It's a little weird, not really saganaki, but very tasty. The good news is the traditional is still just as good, if you aren't that daring.
Best Japanese meal in my life...
When you say "must order the drink pairings" do you mean should order or have to order? As a non-drinker one of my pet peeves is tasting menu's that force you to pay for the drinks that you don't want. I'm excited, but just want to be clear before I go.
Thanks.
Propane tank refills in Toronto
No problem. On the north side of dupont just west of bathurst. Should be pretty close to you.
Brownie Craving
Strange as it seems, but the best place for brownies I've found, is in the little shop in Bathurst Station. They sell them with nuts and without. Rich Chocolate buttery goodness. While you're there you should pick up a spicy beef patty in a coco bun, they're also fantastic.
Summerlicious 2007
My wife and I tried Arriba, and were for the most part dissapointed. The restaurant was less than half full and the service was still extremely slow. We had a play we had to be at, I eventually had to get up, hunt down the server and get our desserts and the bill at the same time. We had sat for over half an hour by that point after finishing our mains.
The atmosphere was great, we had tables right by the window and there was an Argonaut game goint on. It was quite neat to sit and watch the game while having dinner. Neither my wife nor I follow football, but it was still neat.
The food was dissapointing. For apps, I had a cold pea soup that was just okay. The mint was a nice touch, but really it wasn't anything special. My wife had chicken spring rolls (they had a fancy name on the menu, but really they were just spring rolls). Again, okay, but nothing special.
For mains, my wife had a nice maple trout. It was tasty, but very small. I had the porkchop, which was quite large (nearly an inch thick) but very well cooked. It was moist in the middle and seared for texture. Unfortunately it was also very bland with no real flavour.
For dessert my wife had a citrus tart that could have been purchased at a second cup. Nothing special. I had a chocolate and raspberry bread pudding that was the highlight of the meal...even if I couldn't find any chocolate.
All in all, I might go back on a game night just for the atmosphere, but I won't bother with the licious menu, maybe the a la carte will make up for the licious experience.
Vosges Chocolate?
Does anyone know where I can get Vosges Chocolate bars in Toronto? I really want to try a few of there more exotic flavours. Bacon and chocolate=yum.

Thanks.
Best chocolatiers in T.O.?
Stubbe's chocolates on Dupont at Christie. Can't go wrong.
Perogies
Every weekend in the summer there is a booth in the world cafe tent next to the harbourfront centre. Two very european mom types cook them on the spot and they are delicious. No bacon, but lots of onions, sour cream and dill (if you want it). They have cheddar and potato fried and boiled as well as saurkraut filling. They also have 8-10 other options depending on the day. Great place to pop down for lunch or a snack.
Toronto Ribfest
We went this afternoon and picked up ribs from both Camp 31 and Gator's. First thing we noticed is that the gator line moved at half the speed of the rest of the booths. This was due to a single guy working while numerous others stood around. The ribs from camp 31 were wonderfully smoky however the sauce was very lightly applied, I prefer a wetter rib. The ribs from gators were massive and a much better deal for your buck. While the smokyness is less pronounced the sauce is wonderful. Camp 31's were probably cooked better but not significantly so.
We have to agree that the pulled pork from gator's was a little too sweet.
harbourfront area?
Hi,
I've only just moved to the area and am still finding all the good spots. One place I can definitely recommend is Spice Thai Restaurant. It's located at 250 Queen's Quay. The food is excellent, even if the decor is a little much. The only dish to avoid is the beef salad as it actually is a salad with lettuce and carrots in addition to the traditional thai beef.
If you find something else that's good, please let me know.
Breakfast
I can't believe no one has mentioned KOS. It is located on the west side of Bathurst just south of Dupont. The atmosphere is not exactly astounding, but the food is the perfect greasy delight!
Cheap and great!
Queens Quay
Hi Guys,
I've just moved to a new (to me anyway) condo on Queens Quay near York, and I'm interested what sort of reccommendatiions you have for restaurants within a short walking distance?
Also who's great and delivers to this area?
Thanks
Help.. the time of day is against me
Salad King is just around the corner on Gould ave. Arguably the best Thai food in the city, however not the quietest place if you're looking for something a little more intimate.
Baton Rouge in the Eaton Centre is over priced but not bad for a quiet late afternoon lunch.
Meat on a sword?
Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a restaurant in the downtown Toronto area where the waiters walk around with various meats on swords or sticks and serve from them. My wife has always wanted to try such a place and I'm hoping to surprise her.
Thanks!
Pound Cake
That could be it. Sorry, I was just walking by and was lured in by samples. Sweet was definitely in the title, so that is probably it. You walk in and the right hand side is an overflowing counter of treats, then you go past some breads to a little sitting area in the back. Does that sound right?
Pound Cake
There is a great bakery on the north side of Danforth between Pape and Chester Stations. I believe it's called The Sweetest Thing or something very close to that. Can't go wrong, be sure to try a few of their other amazing treats while you're there. I especially reccommend the Croissant Bread Pudding.
Red House mini-review
My wife and I also just finished a very nice meal there. We tried one of their 19.99 for two combo's that included Hot and Sour Soup, Spicy Octopus appetizer, 2 entrees to be shared: Curry noodle with Shrimp and lightly breaded spicy pork. It also included a fried waterchestnut dessert.
The food was excellent and we will definitely be going back. We tried the Plum and Lime Tea and were pleasantly surprised. The sweetness was a little weird at first but quite nice once you got used to it.
The only downside was the speed of the service (I know how weird that sounds). While the waitress was very nice, we had both appetizers and the entrees sitting on the table before we had even made a dent in the soup.
Madeline's cherry pie and ice cream?
Almost directly across the street, there is a little greasy spoon called KOS. The pie at KOS will beat the pants off Madeline everytime.
KOS also has pretty good food. The Greek burger with Feta is great as is the Club sandwich. However it's the breakfast that steals the show. One of the best greasy spoon breakfasts out there.
tapas in toronto
A little bit out of the areas you've specified, but worth the mention is Mezzetta at the corner of Christie and St. Clair. It's only a short trip from little Italy and definitely worth the extra travel. They have more of a mediteranian flavour and each dish is sublime. I especially reccommend the Red Goat Salad and the Slow cooked shrimp.
Where to find Sapodilla and Genip (Quenepas) in SW Ontario?
I can second the recommendation for the fruit markets on Spadina. Over the years I've seen both items there periodically. Your best bet is the two competing shops on the west side of Spadina, just north of Dundas. They have the freshest produce on the strip and are constantly involved in a price war so you can sometimes get a good deal.
Keg Or Tulip - which would you choose??
Just my opinion, but I suggest the Keg Mansion. The food is usually a step up from the regular keg restaurants and a big step up from the tulip. And the ambience is perfect. Casual but a little more sophisticated. It can get a bit busy but the bar is great and you won't mind a little wait.
