Great HOT DOGS up and down the state!

Let me answer my own question..we just tried Booney's and I would recommend them to anyone.. all types of sausages, in 3 sizes, and every type of topping you can desire or imagine..those natural casing dogs have a nice snap to them. The fries are indeed hand cut, and taste great, but I prefer a crispier fry.. I can even recommend the cheeseburgers..very juicy and flame grilled. The service is very friendly and prices reasonable.

Great HOT DOGS up and down the state!

Has anyone tried Booney's Dogs and More at Shaw and West in Fresno? I've heard they have regular size and jumbo dogs (up to 1/2 lb). As well as brats, polish, hot links etc.....in many different configurations as well as burgers and salads. They say they use "natural casing" dogs, but don't say what brand.

Smoke Bros. Southern BBQ - Fresno

Having been to QN4U I can say, they may be the best BBQ masters in competition, but they don't know anything about restaurant cooking.. all of our meats were cold on the inside as if rewarmed.. the meat tasted....well..old.. and the mac and cheese tasted of old socks.. they use some special cheese sauce ladled on overcooked macaroni...and it tasted mostly like stale bleu cheese... we were very dissappointed.
I can back you up 100 percent on the Basque Hotel however... best Basque in town!

Cambria- off times for meals

For the best light lunch (IMHO) grab some custom sandwiches (and sandwich accompaniments) at Soto's Mkt and head for Shamel Park.. eat in a pretty park with the sound of the ocean as your soundtrack... for dinner I agree with others for Sow's Ear, very good food, very friendly staff..

Chinese in Fresno

SG - We've been to IG's dim sum on both weekend days many many times and have never come across a "pumpkin dessert".. could you describe it? We love their dim sum and chicken salad, but not that impressed with the rest of the menu.. we've yet to find the "perfect" chinese place in Fresno that has it all.... especially great fried rice. Han's on Gettysburg and Fresno used to have the best fried rice and eggrolls in town, but they changed hands and changed recipes.. the place smells of rancid oil now. Ming's on First and Bullard has better rice and used to do perfect wings, but again, they changed the wing recipe.. why can't things just stay the same?

Soup and other remedies [Fresno]

Try the Hot and Sour soup at D'hou (Palm and Bullard) or Chile Verde at Maria's Taco Shop (Shaw and West)

Cambria Area -- Trip Report

Lisa, thanks for the great report! I agree with you about Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill... we must have had the same waiter.. the food was so-so and overpriced...but the view is breathtaking.

Thanksgiving Turkey???

Try Spencer's Fresh Market up the road in Atascadero..they are big on organic..

8665 El Camino Real
Atascadero, CA
(805) 461-3636

Crab Cakes in Fresno?

Frankly I get mine from Chesapeake Bay seafood company.. they are huge tasty jumbo lump crabcakes at a reasonable price from QVC.

Pastrami in Fresno

Fat Paulie's used to be famous for its Pastrami burgers piled high with everything..the last one I tried there was ok..but nothing of its former glory.. as for straight pastrami, I really liked the flavor of Lenny's.. when I had it, it was fairly juicy and bacony... and they know how to make a good egg cream.. pretty impressive for non-new york middle easterners..

Fresno, Fig Fest, and...Alice Waters?

cocktail queen did you get to meet alice waters? I drove by and saw the place packed to the edges!

Cambria...sweet cambria....what can I eat there and where can I eat?

I love Cambria too!... If you want to buy picnic fare, go to Soto's Market...great prepared to order sandwiches, and every kind of chip or drink you could want on the side..... for breakfast I like Creekside Cafe, for their Danish Sausage and Aebleskiver plate.. for a nice evening out I recommend The Sow's Ear for fine food and fine service... don't miss the clam chowder and the flower pot breads..

Fresno's Favorite Five

My fave 5 in Fresno are:

Imperial Garden (dim sum and chinese chicken salad)
Mike's (Calzone, minestrone, bread, linguine w/ white clam sauce)
Cool Hand Luke's (ribs, chicken fried steak, chicken n dumplings soup)
Mama Lo's (mac n cheese and best peach cobbler anywhere)
Chicken Man (german fried chicken....hard to find but worth it)

Fried Chicken in North SLO County

I will be in Cambria/Paso/Atascadero/Morro Bay,.....etc... next week and was wondering if anyone knew of any good fried chicken in the area... I haven't had any for a long time and it would be nice for the 4th.

Looking for great ribs in Fresno

Yosemite Ranch is probably more culinarily acceptable than Hometown, lol...but I'm willing to give credit where credit is due.. I need to correct my earlier post.. Chicken Man is on Hughes rather than Weber... still just as scary a neighborhood but at least the food is good.

Looking for great ribs in Fresno

The first thing to go for is the service.. the second thing is the best peach cobbler, anywhere, period. The third thing is the mac n cheese.. if you want great fried chicken, go to Chicken Man on Weber ...out of the way but memorable and different. If you want good beef ribs..go to Cattlemen's in Selma... I don't really care for beef ribs ...and theirs make me wanna order seconds.. ( if you can't get to Selma.. do something really sacriligeous and get beef ribs from..... gasp....ready? Hometown Buffet....kid you not.. ok you guys can lynch me now.

Cambria - Paso Robles recommendations?

In Cambria we like the Sow's Ear, Wild Ginger, Robin's and Linn's (ONLY FOR PIE)... Coming from the Mexican food saturated San Joaquin Valley, (I have at least 5 authentic Mexican restaurants within a 1/2 mile of my house.. there are over 200 in Fresno itself.).. I can't imagine craving Mexican food on vacation...but to each his own..

BREAKFAST and bed

My absolute favorite place 'mid-way' is Pelican Suites in Cambria... the beds are as nice as the breakfasts.. buffet style, with 2 good egg entrees every day, plus other breakfast goodies.. the chef is right there to make sure you are happy and to fix it if you aren't.. they also offer afternoon cheese, wine, cider, crackers and fruit, evening desserts, plus coffee, tea, or cocoa all day.

Looking for great ribs in Fresno

well i attempted to try Big Al's, but I dont think they are ready for the public yet. I went there, found a "Grand Opening" sign, neither of the bbq grills going.. and was told he had "chicken breasts today with organic corn on the side and maybe beans".. looking at the menu, I just about gagged at the prices.. these were sit down restaurant prices.. not drive thru prices.. there were actually 20 dollar items on there.. and i'm not talking family paks either... maybe i'll try again when he's has more items.. but the prices don't entice me.

MaRoo in Fresno--Report

well foodwise we will never catch up to the bay area..... but speaking of asian offshoots.. I heard we just got a new Hawaiian place out by Willow and Herndon that is favored by former Hawaiians...

MaRoo in Fresno--Report

Thank you both GBG and PB for your extensive reports on MaRoo.. there is a little tiny place (can't remember the name) in the strip mall on Maroa and Shields that serves an odd combination of Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and American.. I enjoyed a mixture of Korean and American styles.. short ribs with kimchee, rice and french fries.. and fried chicken wings with kimchee and fries.. everything was tasty and the Korean owner was very friendly especially as we discussed a mutual love of a Korean miniseries..

There is also a Filipino place in the same strip mall... has anyone tried it?

Looking for great ribs in Fresno

Thanks for the report PB, I love chicken and waffles and I do like a lot of smokiness to my meats, so maybe I'll give this a try. Perhaps the reason the chicken took so long is because real fried chicken is made to order and takes a bit of time to fry. In the best KC chicken houses, it takes 45 minutes to get your chicken. I intend to try Big Al's this week and will report back.

Great HOT DOGS up and down the state!

I've heard about that cafeteria from my hubby who works downtown, he and his co-workers like it pretty well....be on the lookout for rotating daily specials..

Mother's Day Brunch/Lunch Restaurants Fresno...any ideas or leads??

The only suggestion I have is where NOT to go... the hotel across the street from Selland Arena, I think it's a Doubletree Inn... typical open buffet problems.. warm stuff cold, cold stuff warm, and none of it very tasty.... I've been looking for good Mother's Day fare myself this year.

Best Burger, Pizza or Chinese in Paso Robles?

My sister in Paso says her faves are: Good Ol Burgers, 1145 24th st,.....Paso Pizza Kitchen, 1131 Creston Rd, .......Dragon Palace King Buffet, 826 Spring St.

Heading to San Simeon, any recs

although the baked goods aren't great at the cider place , I have to put in my two cents for the cider and especially the bag of caramel puffs, which taste like a dessert version of the best breakfast cereal you ever ate.. they are crunchy, sweet, and very addictive, I never go down 46 without grabbbing a bag or two or three.

Heading to San Simeon, any recs

Truth be known, at the castle visitor center, they serve a pretty good tri tip sandwich.. while in Cambria, we like Robin's, The Sow's Ear, Creekside Cafe for breakfast, Wild Ginger for Asian take out, and Linn's for pie.. we love to stay at Pelican Suites with their lovely ocean front rooms and full breakfast buffet, along with afternoon wine and cheese, and after dinner dessert bar.

Great HOT DOGS up and down the state!

I most always get the minimal dollar dog at Cali's because I really don't need many condiments with a Nathan's .. (personally I could eat them plain).. sorry to hear that the Lowe's stand doesn't have all the traditional condiments the way they used to.. it's almost impossible to find a true Chicago dog here in Fresno..

Deli Delicious and Bread Mill-Fresno

have you tried the sandwiches at Great Harvest Bread Co near Champlain and Perrin? I have heard nothing but good about that place.. as for pastries you might want to try either Eddie's Bakery at the NW corner of Cedar & Herndon or Ernie's Bakery on Kings Canyon near Chestnut for the best fresh strawberry cheesecake I've ever tasted. I don't know how long you've lived here, but I really miss Greg's sandwiches which used to be on Kings Canyon near the old bowling alley.. their BBQ beef with cheese and wax peppers was spectacular.
