Cheap Eats in Astoria

I recommend Tamales Lady on Astoria Blvd. between Crescent and 23rd St. She appears around 4pm. Tamales Piquet (green sauce w/chicken) is delicious and only $1.

Her Tamales Piquet?, the one with green sauce and chicken, is delicous! Get 1 or 2 pieces for snack or appetizer, or get 4 or 5 pieces for a meal. Haven't tried anything else but should be good too.

Discount/Wholesale Liquor in NYC? (wedding)

I realized the other day how much I have wasted over the years for not buying at Costco liquer store. No membership needed for liquer store and cafeteria. Love the pizza at cafeteria too.

Costco croissant, awsome!

12 delicioso croissant for $6. Just warm it up in oven toaster at 300 degree for minutes and it tastes like just baked. Worth paying $50 to become a 1 yr Costco member just for that croissant. No need to pay $2 for a croissant at some fancy bakeries anymore.

Alert! Tamales lady in Astoria. Tasty tamales for $1.

I just found a mexican? woman selling tasty tamales on Astoria Blvd. around Crescent St. She has a shopping cart and a sign with menu and price on it. I bought her tamales yesterday and today. I recommend Tamales Verdes which is spicy green chilli and pork tamales. It's as good as the one I had in Jackson Heights. She said she sells almost every day from afternoon (maybe after 3 or 4 pm. If you are in the area, try it.

I recommend Australian Shiraz to go with her Tamales Verdez.

sushi rolls...your favorite, who, what, where and why.

Tuna roll at Tomoe Sushi in NYC. Their tuna roll is a little bit different. Tuna is much tastier than other places.

White Tuna warning! Banned in Japan for consumption.

"Not toxic. It's just that you can't digest the oils so they might leak out."

I don't want that happen to me. LOL.

It just "looks" toxic with very white flesh.

White Tuna warning! Banned in Japan for consumption.

I'm lobbying for a ban on this fish right now spending all my life savings. Money is running out, but we may win soon. You should still be able to eat your own catch of escolar even if the ban is realized.

Just kidding about lobbying, but calling the fish "white tuna" should be outlawed at least. It's totally misleading.

Sushi question: white tuna v. albacore

So called "White Tuna" usually isn't tuna at all. It's Escolar, deep sea fish. It is banned for consumption in Japan. So, you will never find that "white tuna" in any Sushi restaurant in Japan. Escolar is also a cheap fish. Escolar's high fat content is indigestible to human and can cause problem. That's why it is banned in Japan and some other countries. It tastes good, I admit it. However, I stopped eating it after I found out about the possible danger and ban in Japan. It's also high in mercury.

It's called Walu in Hawaii. Many people still eat this fish. Good luck if you still eat it!

I'm just staying away from this "white tuna" stuff since I found out about it. It looks very toxic in my opinion. Good luck if you eat it.

White Tuna warning! Banned in Japan for consumption.

If you like so called "White Tuna" at sushi places, be careful. Those really white and oily fatty fish was banned for consumption in Japan in 1969 because its high content of fat is indigestible to humans and having laxative effect. You can get really sick if you eat a lot. The white tune isn't really tuna either. Albacore tuna is a kind of tuna, but the white tuna I'm talking about is really a deep sea fish called escolar.

It's fatty and tasty, but can make you sick or run to a bathroom. Watch out.
I consider any sushi place serving this "White Tuna" to be unauthentic. We should eventually ban this fish in the U.S. too.

real good astoria italian sausages

I like when cheese leach out and add wonderful grilled cheese flavor to the sausage. It's the best part of Joe's cheese sausage. So, don't worry 'bout it.

Joe's Pork Store - The Best There Is

Yeah, Joe's is the real deal. It's a gem of the neighborhood. I love their salamis and fresh sausages. They close early in the evening. They are between 37th and 38th.

Best homemade Salami / dried sausage in NYC?

I am a salami fan. I don't like vaccum packed salami because of they don't have flavor and texture of homemade salamis you find in some stores

My recommedation is, "Joe's Pork Store" in Astoria. It's located on Ditmars Blvd. bet 37th and 38th Street. Small pork specialist who make their own salamis. They only make two kinds of salamis (sweet and hot) in various shapes and sizes. Their sweet salamis are very mild and soft taste that's so addictive. They also make fresh sausages. My favorite is skinny sausage with cheese. When grilled or pan roasted, grilled cheese flavor adds tastiness to delicious fresh italian sausage. Joe's is one of the gem which is not discovered yet.

Any other recommendation in your area? Doesn't have to be Italian salami.
