Where can I find Vana Tallinn?
Gonna try some making some Vana Tallinn ice cream this summer! Any suggestions for Mix-ins?
Where can I find Vana Tallinn?
Thanks, Cluenaws! I've been waiting about 9 months to get some. I ordered some too; I notice they don't carry the cream liqueur, but that's easily made by mixing it with half and half or cream. :)
In search of: Vana Tallinn
Anyone out there in the U.S. have access to this liqueur? It's wonderful, but apparently not sold (yet) in the States. Recently returned from Estonia and would love to get my hands on some. Will pay reasonable price.
Good place in St. Peterburg
Try the Zhababar on the corner of Kazanskaya and Gorokhovaya. Had a superlative meal, including entree, drink (prosecco), and dessert for $32 pp. This is cheap for a fine meal in Russia. Entrees included salmon-filled blini, medallions of veal with a wine sauce, excellent salads in an otherwise salad-starved country, and the best cheesecake (chis kek) of your life. Highly recommended!
For a nice, filling, cheaper lunch (blinchiki), try the Samovar across the street on Gorokhovaya. It doesn't have as many filling choices as other blinnayas in town, but those they had were delicious (mushroom and potato, ham and mushroom---don't miss the sweet cheese (tvorog) filling, drizzled with honey).
Where can I find Vana Tallinn?
Just returned from Estonia and must find some Vana Tallinn here in the States. Does anyone know where I can find it? (that sticky dark liqueur that tastes oh so much better than Bailey's; poured on ice cream, it is bliss). Please help!
Good places to eat in Albany, Corvallis or Lebanon?
Oh yeah! Shakes are the best. Anyone ever stop at Allann Bros. for eats (besides coffee)?
Foods you love at Trader Joe's that got discontinued? [OLD]
I too mourn the loss of the various varieties of Corn Maiden tamales. I suppose they were discontinued due to supply/demand issues. I've considered mail ordering from Corn Maiden (they do ship) or making them myself (so labor intensive for one person)
Poutine in the NW?
Tony Bourdain did a show on poutine in Quebec last year that intrigued me. I heard a vague rumor that someplace in Seattle also serves a version of it. Does anyone know where that might be? Sounds like the quintessential cure for a hangover, with of course, a beer or two to wash it down. (If anyone is aware of another version to be found in Portland, OR, that would be even better).
Tourtiere, a Quebec specialty - Meat Pie (recipe)
My in-laws (French Canadians) eat it with ketchup. go figure.
SEA: Cheap Eats around Uni and Downtown
For a great South Indian experience, I'd recommend Neelam's on the Ave; nice lunch buffet and excellent dosas with multiple filling choices.
Need help for group of 10 in Portland Orgeon
Depends upon your budget. I have had excellent meals at Andina (nuevo Peruvian---lots of seafood, sebiche) and believe they could accommodate ten. Other ideas: Higgins (NW cuisine and superb charcuterie), Paley's Place, Carlyle, Wildwood. I'd call ahead to make sure they could accomodate your group size; some of our best restaurants here are intimate and might not seat a group of 10. Check out extramsg's website on food; it's quite comprehensive, entertaining and informative. (www.extramsg.com)
xiomara v. mi place v. other late nite old town eats?
Bummer! The food was excellent and they made killer mojitos with cane juice (yum).
Best noodles in PDX?
I like Pho Hung's "homestyle" pho as well, even better than Pho Van, who gets all the press. Their bun also are quite tasty. All food there is priced better than Pho Van. However, I do love and crave Pho Van's lime ade. It's what I dream of on a hot summer day (which we better start having pretty soon!)
Best noodles in PDX?
Extramsg, I apologize for lauding you as a food god and will henceforth snarl at you as you wish. However, I do wish to point out that your recommendation of Hakatamon for udon was spot on. Their tempura was not fried to a dark crisp; rather it was tender, lacy and pale and the shrimp oh so sweet. The sushi I saw coming out of the kitchen looked great----must try it next time. Question: how DO they get such a fine chiffonade on the green onions for that udon broth? Splendid and tasty.
Voodoo Donuts
Maple bar with bacon strips is the BEST! so thought Tony Bourdain and so do I. A brilliantly simple concept with undeniably the best flavor combination. Voodoo, I salute your genius!
Good places to eat in Albany, Corvallis or Lebanon?
My kids have moved to Albany, OR. Where to eat out? I'll eat anything but fast food; ethnic preferred, but NW cuisine as well. Help me out, Chowhounders! Thanks.
German food - undeserved bad reputation
Schreiner's deli in the '50s was the deli of my childhood dreams. I remember going in there as a small kid and being handed a slice of wurst. Most of all, I remember the smell of the place. Whenever I enter a German or Polish deli, it takes me right back to Schreiner's. I've been in there recently, since the family still lives in La Canada, and they're modernized it, of course. They USED to sell a braunschweiger with pistachios that made me swoon, but don't know if they have it anymore. Wish time transport were possible, because I'd surely like to go back to Schreiner's for a few minutes in 1955-58.
Any good (strange?) jerky in Seattle?
Check out Uwajimaya. They carry some excellent unusual jerky, some from British Columbia with exotic flavors and also some Jerky from Salem, OR that is just plain delicious (Bakke Brothers, several different flavors). Most of it is beef-based, but it's as far from Oberto as you can get.
porkchop stuffing ideas
A cornbread stuffing with pecans and dried apricots or dried cherries is one of my favorites. Fruit and pork are a happy marriage.
Doner kebab in PDX?
Please say yes!....extramsg, you food god who knows all, tell me where to go. Others, please feel free to chime in. Loved it in Europe, but it's harder to find here.
Navarre
IMO, there's one reason to go to Navarre (although there are probably others): Chef Taboada's Portuguese pork loin, slowly braised with some tomato-based sauce and anchovies (yes, anchovies). One slice is all you need to go to heaven. I ate it there a few years ago, and hope he still does it, because I'm going back for my fix. Menu can be uneven, but my dinner at Navarre for six family members is one we still talk about. (Maybe the three bottles of damn tasty, expensive wine had something to do with it). Still, I remember the food and especially the pork.
[PDX] Chinese in Beaverton?
I second the motion on Chinatown. The strip mall location is a disguise for the best Chinese I've found on the west side. Dim sum all the time, but best in late morning or early afternoon. Golden mushroom hot pots....this chef is gifted. Even my Chinese friends recommend it. Another reason to eat there....this hardworking chef was robbed last fall. He works too damn hard to have such a loss. I'd eat there for that reason even if the food was not as good as it is... You won't be disappointed. Location: SW Walker Road and Murray, across from Nike. As for dim sum, ask for eggplant stuffed with shrimp....silky brown shoyu-flavored sauce, creamy texture, ambrosia! Good prices too. My favorite west-side Sunday "brunch".
Kiel, Germany?
Fish, fish and more fish. Local sprats, eel, herring - and don't forget the marzipan from nearby Lubeck. Contact me at manya7@fibersphere.net and I'll give you an email address for a local person who may have specific restaurants to suggest. :)
Best noodles in PDX?
I was looking for something more authentic and less upscale than Silk. Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese----bring 'em on!
Best noodles in PDX?
I'm partial to pho, but willing to expand my repetoire. Any faves out there?
Anyone eaten at Mama Zoya's in Moscow?
I'm headed to Russia in May and want some really good Georgian food. Any suggestions? I liked Mama Zoya because I have a cat of that name!
Best five Polish restaurants in Chicago area
If you can narrow it down to five.....please do! Really need some excellent kielbasa, gulabki, and noodle dishes, but please, no czarnina.
Jonesin' for a red-chile pork tamale in Albuquerque
I'm heading to Albuquerque in August for a wedding. Where, oh where can I find the red-chile pork tamale of my dreams?
