Costco Food Finds - 4th Quarter 2014

Love the Korean pork jerky. I call it crack jerky because it's hard to stop eating! My sister sent it to me for Christmas last year and Costco in Waterbury just started carrying it.

New Ideas for daughter's sweet 16

Thanks for the info. I have been to Shopsins before but my daughter has not and might enjoy the experience especially since I make the Mac and Cheese pancakes at home. I will check out the other ideas too.

New Ideas for daughter's sweet 16

We are frequent visitors to NYC. I am looking for new ideas to celebrate daughter's birthday in a few months. We have been taking her into the city for the last 12 years. These are the places we have already been so looking for something new with a WOW factor. Only criteria is no seafood.
We've been to:
Tao
Budakan
Max Brenner
Serendipity 3
Dylan's candy bar
Economy Candy
Beauty and Essex
Jean George
Perry Street
Jojo
Sugar Factory
The Mark-on St. Mark's place
Grey's papaya
Spice Market
Lincoln
Kefi
Jacob's Pickles
Sugar and Plum
Clinton Street Baking Company
Burger Joint
Five Napkin Burger
Le Relais de Venice Entrecote
Dominque Ansel
Five Points
Flor de Mayo
La Caridad
Various places in Chinatown for hand pulled noodles, pork buns,
and dumplings
The meatball shop
Mighty Quinn's
Turkaz
Smorgburg
Curry in a hurry

Daughter especially liked Beauty and Essex and Spice Market. Something along those lines would be good. Spending the weekend so breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner ideas would be much appreciated.

PIEROGIS?

Don't walk-run to Passions bakery on Broad Street. The best pierogies are to be had there. Went last night and just fried them up for lunch. They also have these little potato things. I am not sure what they are called but they like a little dumpling with potato and maybe cheese. I fried them up like the pierogies with butter. Yum.

Moving to 105 and Broadway - Whats good up there?

I don't live in the area but visit family often at 104th. I am especially fond of the pana cotta, the chive cheddar pastry and the chocolate orange rolls from Silver Moon. I think the chocolate orange rolls are only available on the weekends. I just had one toasted with butter and it was a great way to start my morning. I also think Xian famous foods is really good and inexpensive if you like spicy noodles. And don't forget Absolute bagels on Broadway between 107-108th. I also like La Caradid del Rey on Amsterdam near 108th for chicken, beans and rice. Wish I lived in the city with all the great food choices instead of the suburbs. I visit any chance I get!!!

CT: clams casino or linguine with clam sauce, take me to the water!

Looking at the clams posillipo made me think of zuppa de mussels that I used to order at Alfredo's Riverside in Middletown. Any suggestions where I can find something as great as that dish?

Enough time for brunch before a matinee

I don't have theater tickets as of yet. I am thinking I might take a trip to the TKTS booth in Brooklyn to see what is available. I also plan to take a taxi from Lincoln to the theater. Do you think it will be easy to get one on Saturday on Broadway especially if it's raining? I usually do the subway but with the older ladies taxi will be easier for them. I know this doesn't have to do with Chow but maybe I can get a response before it gets flagged.

Enough time for brunch before a matinee

Decided on a brunch at Lincoln for my daughter, myself, my mother and my mother-in-law. I have a 11:30am reservation. Do you think that I scheduled enough time to make a 2pm matinee?

best fancy chocolates

I have to agree about Kee's. They are made in small hand crafted batches. Worth every penny.

Stanton Social?

Yeah I was kind of second guessing myself on that too. I think I would enjoy it but this my semi annual trip with the grandmothers of my daughter. It's more about them and not me! On the last trip we went to Kefi and Five Points. I am considering Jean George or Telepan. I am also thinking they might enjoy a matinee show so any ideas on pre theater lunch or brunch would be appreciated. Any location in Manhattan is okay. It doesn't have to necessarily be midtown/times square.
Thank you.

Stanton Social?

I am a fan of Beauty and Essex and was thinking of trying the Stanton Social for brunch. My question is that I am taking my 76 year old mother and my 80 year old mother in law and they are both hard of hearing. I am concerned that it may be too loud there to hear conversation at the table. Any thoughts on that?

Looking for a good place to get chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce near 104th and Broadway in the evenings. I am a big fan of Famous Halal Guys and Kwik meal but don't want to travel that far. Any suggestions?

Who do you follow on the Manhattan Board?

I can't believe no one has mentioned Ziggy41. He has not steered me wrong yet. He also has a great blog too with lots of info on Hell's Kitchen. If you are reading this Ziggy 41 I tried Pure Thai Cookhouse. The only downside to my meal there was that I dropped that delicious Asian rib all down my shirt but it was yummy!

Asian Restaurant (Broad St., Middletown, CT)

Thanks for the post. I have been wondering about this restaurant since they sent the menu in the mail. On another note though I miss Sorelle's in the same location. I ate their garlic bread several times a week when I was pregnant!!

Fancy Food Show-next week

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that too. My only experience has been with bakery food shows. Glad this one will have savory as well. I will make sure to check out the newbies. Do you know if there will be alcoholic beverages/cocktails to try too?

Ma Peche (NYC) vegetable recipes?

I had this dish a couple of weeks ago and also can't stop thinking about them. I practically devoured the whole dish myself. If you find a link to a copycat recipe please post it here.

Mercato Hells Kitchen

Does anyone know if the menu is the same as their lunch/dinner menu for Saturday and Sunday brunch? I want to go there but I want to try items on there lunch/dinner menu not breakfast like items. On another thought-I had my heart set on lunch at Momofuku Ssam bar for Saturday brunch/lunch but now I am thinking Ma Peche instead mainly due to reading Ziggy's blog. It has become my new favorite NYC food page. Any thoughts out there? Ma Peche is closer to where I am staying but I have no problem taking the subway either.

brunch/saturday lunch with mother in law, mom and teenage daughter

Ended up going with Five Points. So glad we had a reservation. Everyone enjoyed the food especially the lemon ricotta pancakes. It was quite loud for the old ladies but they managed. Thanks everyone.

Quick note on Laduree SoHo

Back to Laduree Soho-Does anyone know if I could get a table if only having a breakfast pastry/dessert and tea or would I have to order an entrée off the brunch menu on the weekends?

Thanks for all the replies. I know you New Yorkers would come through!!! I was kind of thinking of Five Points myself. In a couple of weeks I will let you know where we went and how it went over with the family. In the meantime keep the ideas coming.

brunch/saturday lunch with mother in law, mom and teenage daughter

Looking for a nice place for either brunch or lunch. Mother in law is more the 5th Ave type. Décor ranks higher than food for her. Mom is funky-more downtown than uptown lady. Daughter-will find something to eat but no seafood. I am open to anything but have to consider my companions for this trip. We will be down in Soho for a hair appt. and the less walking for the mothers would be great. Not opposed to taking the subway. Also the mothers are hard of hearing so a place that isn't too loud would be good. I know that is a lot of special requests but I know you chow hounders can help me out.
Thank you.
