Good German, Eastern European or Russian Food in Chicago

Thanks. Now I have two for our trip next year.

Good German, Eastern European or Russian Food in Chicago

Thanks for all the help, went to Laschets Inn on the brown line. For visitors this was the perfect neighborhood place. It was fathers days and full of local families. Food and service was great. Spatzle tasted home made and pan fried after boiling.

We also tried the red apple for lunch on the blue line. Yes get the soup and the beer on tap. Coming from Reno I hate buffets, but this is a step above. Evtremely clean, spotless restrooms, very attractive inside and the food was several steps aboce the norm.

Thanks again for helping us visitors find the real Chicago

Good German, Eastern European or Russian Food in Chicago

Bringing my son to Chicago from Reno. He is a big fan of the above. I use the El a lot and occasional taxis so location is non-specific. Also any recommendations of things he might enjoy. Thanks

NYC Chowhounds need High-end French Lunch

The only option (and not quite a fit) is La Sardine which is open for lunch I think and considered competant French by many.

24 Hour Layover in Chicago

The nice thing about the Damen stop is the area. There are wine bars, stores, clubs and resturants. If you have time to kill this is a great selection. On a Frisay night it will be full of a thirty something crowd.

24 Hour Layover in Chicago

I am not sure where you are staying but some of the hoels are close to the Blue Line el and some can drop you off. I suggest you check with your hotel.

I would take the blue line to the Damen exit (wicker park/Bucktown). To get there take the direction away from ohare and to get back to ohare. Or take a taxi back.

I have attached a link for the stop.

If you were moving to Chicago and didn't have a car...

In chicago, walking distence near the EL. I agree with Andersonville, near the red line for cost and being able to get around town.

Check out the attached link. It is a good start to learning the El.

Inexpensive but Yummy near Hotel Allegro?

You are close enough to both Greektown and Little Italy to take a cab or use the Blue line. I have attached a link if you click UIC halsted you will see Greektown resturants. If you click Polk you are neer little Italy (try Rosebud). The Alegro is agreat hotel(did have wine tastings every afternoon- may still have. You are right near the Clark Lake stop and the Washinton State stops on the map. I think both Grrektown and Little Italy are perfect for a group. Check with the staff at the hotel also. For a beer burger dive Monks is around the corner free peanuts. If you do not mind walking the Chicago el is a great way to see the city. Play with like below and you can go to alot of neighborhoods. The red and blue lines are near to you and both are fun. You can get day passes also.

Help for L.A. Mom and Son staying at Hilton

Your a block or two away from the red line Harrison El stop. If you want a non LA adventure ride the el to different neighborhoods. For example you are only two stops from China Town. The red line is a great one for first timers. I have attached a link for you that will help you work it out. And although its public transportation its cheap and safe.

Chicago for 6 days

I visit Chicago at least twice a year for a eek at a time. The el is the best way to get around. Although late at night I will take a taxi.

I am now an expert at geeting to many resturants by using the link below.
http://centerstage.net/virtual-el/

Along with this use yahoo map t and select public transportation under travel and trasportation.

Off course this only works if you like to walk the neighborhoods. Put on those walking shoes.

PS: try the Casbah on Broadway and Belmont- middle eastern BYOB- store across the street.

Dining recommendations for a weekend in Portland?

If you are staying near or at the Hilton Downtown. I would try Southpark Grill it is within walking distence and the freash fish specials are great and on Friday and Saturday it is open until 11. It gets mixed reviews also but I perfer it over higgens (also close by)

Has a great bar.

Boston Hound Visiting Chicago With Kids after Long Absence

If you have never been to the Rainforest Cafe there is one 605 North Clark Street downtown. The Grand station on the red line is the closest.

Trip to Portland from Reno

We arrived on Thursday taking the train from the airport to the downtown Hilton. From there we had lunch at Jakes. It was just so-so. My crab salad was good, my wife ordered clams as a starter and the quantity was a little meager. The fish she ordered was fresh and prepared well but was served with cold garlic mashed potatoes, good job she is counting her carbs. Good service and decent bread. But with so many great restaurants in Portland we will not be back.

For dinner we taxied to BeWon Korean restaurant. Had the 7 course with wine parings. It was great; my wife who is not a Korean food fan thought the restaurant was a nice and a different dining experience. The main course was served with about 9 small condiment plates, all of which were interesting. The decor is modern and the restaurant is down stairs. The one waiter was very attentive. Plus the wine matched well.

The next day we had lunch at Karam Lebanese, got there before twelve, which was good because after that it was packed. The warm puffy pita bread was a first for us, sure beats the supermarket kind. I had the eggplant stew with lamb, a great deal and very tasty. My wife had the kabob and enjoyed it, all the meat was lean and the rice was also good.

For dinner we went to Southpark, which had mixed reviews on the Chow Board. However, it was perfect. The setting was nice, bustling but not too loud. We were greeted at the door and said good bye to when we left. The service was prompt but not too prompt and the fish specials were delicious. My wife liked it so much we ended up having two dinners and one lunch there. Tried both the mussels and the clams as starters, could have been a meal, put Jakes to shame for the same price. No cold garlic mashed potatoes here either; the fish was served at different meals with vegetable tarts, polenta and vegetable crepes. Had one desert a bread pudding that was more like a custard-wonderful. Both Wine by the bottle and by the glass was reasonable and a lot of choices.

On Sunday we ate breakfast in the peril district at Everett Street Bistro. It was very crowded and the tables were close together. A little loud but a perfect place for breakfast. I had the crab scramble and my wife the Black Forest ham scramble. Its hard to explain but the eggs are prepared a little differently than most scrambled eggs- but quite enjoyable. Sunday we ate in the bar at Higgens, the food was competent but not wow. The best part was our companions at the bar. It was a very outgoing group and we had a great time.

Looking forward to our next trip from Reno to Portland.

1st Girls Trip to Chicago

My wife and I visit Chicago every year and although we do not usually go down to Rush street this year we are bringing our Daughter. Our plan is to have wine flights with cheese flights at Bin 36, then head down Michigan Ave to the Signature Room bar for a drink and the view. After that we have a meal at Le Colonial on Rush. We will either walk back, take the el or taxi it. This may be a good option for your trip.

Sutter Creek pre-concert dinner

We are traveling to Sutter Creek this Friday for a concert in the theater there. Are there any decent places to have dinner before the show in downtown Sutter Creek.

Best Steak at a Non-Steak House

My daughter loves steak but my wife is not crazy about steakhouses. Middle tier resturants, location is not important as we vist often and ride the el as well as use taxis.

Thanks
