Where to buy dried mulato chiles?
I ended up getting them at Christina's. I went to Mayfair but they didn't have them (given the Fiesta Mart in Texas didn't stock them either, I had a feeling I'd have to go to a specialty spot here). They didn't have them out on the floor at Christina's but I just asked; they keep them downstairs. Mulatos have an earthier and stronger flavor than ancho, so using them as the primary chile in mole makes sense. Someone at Formaggio told me they are spicier than ancho but I'm not sure that's true (I know, I should just do a taste test now that I have them).
Where to buy dried mulato chiles?
Where is Mayflower exactly? Allston is easy enough for me to get to, but I'm searching for Mayflower online and not coming up with anything.
Where to buy dried mulato chiles?
Yep, that's the recipe! I hate to sub anchos because anchos are already called for in his recipe, so I assume he sees enough difference between mulato and ancho to call for both.
Where to buy dried mulato chiles?
I am making mole (bayless's recipe) and picked the dried ancho and pasilla when I was in Texas, but am now back in the Boston area and still need the dried mulato. Does anyone know where I could find these, or am I stuck with ordering online?
thanks for the help!
Where to buy beeswax for making caneles?
Does anyone know where I can buy beeswax in the area that would be fit for greasing canele molds (i.e. food grade)? From what I understand, greasing the molds with beeswax and a neutral oil is key. Any ideas?
LA-area Meat CSA or Best Alternative?
Hey Obsessed, just looked at the link. It looks awesome, and I love that there is cheese on there too, several of which I already know they love. Thanks so much, a priceless tip!
LA-area Meat CSA or Best Alternative?
Harry, you should think of joining a CSA/meat share/etc the ultimate challenge if you are really a serious cook. i am now involved in a meat, vegetable, and fish share here. i am a very serious cook and i used to think that giving up that control would be a downgrade. i've actually become a much better cook now. i don't pick what i get and i love it. Sure I get things I don't love now and again (ugh, cucumbers), but I tell you what. I found a way to incorporate them into a cold thai noodle salad and they are great. it's like the ultimate challenge, and i'm forced to try new things and experiment with cooking.
And thanks Obsessed, I will look into it!!
LA-area Meat CSA or Best Alternative?
My brother and his fiance are getting married soon and I would love to get them a meat csa share. I did some searching online (I am in Boston) but can't find anything in the LA area, which surprises me. Can anyone help with my search? Or if no meat CSAs or similar outfits exist in the LA area, I might get them a gift certificate to a top-notch area butcher/source for top-quality meat. Thinking mostly beef, but some pork, and definitely goat if an option, would be great. Suggestions?
Silverbrook Farm CSA Opinions?
I've seen a lot of posts about various CSAs - redfire, stillman's, brookfield, food project -- but I haven't seen much about Silverbrook. Can anyone give me some thoughts on their CSA? I like that they mix in some cheese, eggs, and even jam and honey, and the home delivery is quite nice (though I realize it makes it more expensive for the amount of food you get). Has anyone who has joined their CSA give me some thoughts?
thanks!
Lionette's
Interesting, thanks. I travel to VT on and off and would love to see Jamey's new place, if he's starting a shop. Do you happen to know his plans?
Where did Lee of Chocolee go?
Anyone have any update on where she is going to end up?
Lionette's
Went into Lionette's last night and it has changed hands just recently. Am curious, does anyone know where Jamey will be going? The guy in the shop, the new owner I believe, said Jamey was going to VT. I went to the shop a lot and will definitely miss Jamey, and I wonder how much will change at the store without him (the guy said it would get a new name, so that's one!)
Anyone know anything?
New Year's Eve Dinner in Newton?
My husband and I live in boston and will be ringing in the new year with friends in Newton (they live near the eliot stop, to be exact). We'd like to try dinner somewhere close by. Any suggestions for a nice (doesn't have to be extremely formal, of course) new years eve dinner in the newton area?
Coppa
I went by last night hoping they were finally open for dinner. it was about 8:30. chairs were stacked on the tables and lights were off. Again, make of that what you will....
Where did Lee of Chocolee go?
fabulous, thanks. I went by on saturday and she wasn't there, but the nice woman who helps her was there. I know Lee works all the time, but I hate to knock when the sign says closed! This week would be perfect timing for a mousse-sickle!
sandwiches to go in JP
Ah, good point about the arboretum. But if you go to Ula or Canto 6 (can't believe I forgot about them -- love Goat in the Garden Sandwich. And again, Clear Flour Bread, with delicious canneles for dessert!) there is the corridor park nearby.
Hammersley's Recommendations
I went just for dessert at the bar the other day and we got a chocolate mousse cake that was OK, but the trifle with yuzu, lemon, lime, and fresh berries was absolutely outstanding. highly recommend!
Where did Lee of Chocolee go?
Hopefully. It just seems odd that she would be gone for this long and not at least leave a sign in the window....
sandwiches to go in JP
I'm a big fan of Ula Cafe on Armory Street in the old Brewery (take a right on Armory from Boylston and it will be on your left). It's a great neighborhood spot, a nice space, and they have great stuff across the board. Earlier this week I had the sweet potato sandwich for the first time. It was outstanding (and points for creativity). Sliced baked sweet potato, avocado, sprouts, a tahini-yogurt sauce on clear flour bread. They have vegetarian- and carnivore-friendly sandwiches.
Where did Lee of Chocolee go?
I go to Chocolee periodically (love her and everything she does), but her shop has been closed for a couple of weeks now, with no sign indicating where she is--vacation, sick, or otherwise. And it looks like there are still chocolates just sitting in the case. I'm actually worried about her now. I've gone by 4 or 5 times in the past few weeks and she hasn't been in. Does anyone know what's going on?
Bakery/Brioche in Newport?
Hi,
I'm going to Newport Easter weekend and have volunteered to make French toast Sunday morning. I'd prefer to use a fresh loaf of brioche, an I don't really want to buy a loaf on Friday in Boston (even though I do love Flour's brioche loaves when they make them!) since by Sunday it just won't be as good. Any suggestions on good Newport bakeries or shops where I could buy a good fresh loaf Saturday night or Sunday morning?
Thanks!
Allen's Neck Clambake?
Hi there,
I just learned about this clambake and didn't find much info online, aside from your posting here. Did you ever find out how to attend?
Where to find fresh fish in JP?
Thanks for the ideas -- I had a feeling I wouldn't find what I go to now -- Hook's for shellfish and New Deal for finfish. But I have been to Roslindale Village a few times and really like a few spots there, so I will check out Roslindale Fish Market. Another excuse to drop into Fornax, and check out the cheese spot. If a Fomaggio/Russo's would open in JP, I would move there in a heartbeat!
Where to find fresh fish in JP?
I'm considering moving to JP, but I cook fish 2 or 3 times a week. Is there a good fish monger or store where I can buy good fresh (not frozen) fish?
Nashoba Brook Bakery-South End
Didn't the sign indicate they would reopen once they found a new space? Any word on whether that is going to happen?
Parziale's or Bova for fresh bread?
FYI, I went to Bova's and tried their bread. I will say that it was cheap. And I believe priced according to quality. It just doesn't stack up in the same league as any of the other area artisan breads!
Crepe place on Cambridge Street, Boston?
This location must be cursed since Spotted Apron is now gone. Wonder what will go in next?
Parziale's or Bova for fresh bread?
thanks treb. I am going to try something in the n end just to explore. Though I think Parziale's may have been there even longer from what I understand?
Parziale's or Bova for fresh bread?
Thanks for the input everyone!
I went yesterday to Sel and granted it's not phenomenal as it was, I still think for local bread (I'd go to B&R if I had a car), it's comparatively very good. It's the whole problem of remembering what it used to be like!
Also, anyone know anything about Breadsong and have opinions on what they put out? I remember seeing them at the Farmer's Market -- do they make When Pigs Fly type bread (i.e. dense)? I'm tempted to go check them out.
joebelt, do you know whose bread the Salumeria carries?
Parziale's or Bova for fresh bread?
I have been here since September, so still exploring. I only ask about the N. End specifically because I assumed that it, being the N. End, would have some great fresh bread. Disappointing and surprising that they do not from what it sounds like.
I definitely am familiar with Iggy's -- any personal favorites on their best bread? Also curious about Breadsong and Fornax, which are a little out of the way but have piqued my interest. I'd be curious if anyone has some input (clearly, I really like fresh bread!).
