Caterer in southern monmouth county

I am looking for some one with a reasonable budget (i.e. Joe Leone's is out) to caterer our daughters' family birthday party in the southern Monmouth county area. Any suggestions?

If you like eatting in an igloo and waiting forever this is the place for you!

While the food was ok (note it was not great - especially for the price), my husband (whom is always warm) and I could not even enjoy it because it was so cold in this restaurant. We tried three different tables and nothing helped. I was not the only diner eating in my wool overcoat either! We asked our server about it and she said she was chilly too but the rest of the staff thought it was fine so there had been no adjustment to the heat. All the same she did ask the hostess to move us to a different area of the restaurant but it was still freezing (like nose dripping, toes numb cold!)!
As for the food it was ok. I was surprised how much is fried and how limited the seafood options were on the menu. Also, for a meal like this it shouldn't be ala carte either! I ended up having the crispy shrimp to start (good), french onion soup to thaw out (average) and rack of lamb for dinner (I ordered it medium and it was rare to medium rare). And this took about 2 hours. Needless to say we didn't stay for dessert -- instead we went to starbucks in order to regain feeling in our fingers.
Very disappointed.

Cape May help!

Congrats on the anniversary! We go down there every year for ours as well in September. As per the suggestions of this board we tried out Moonfish this year and it was fantastic!! The banannas foster crepe is to die for. We used to love Godmothers but sadly in the last few years it has gone down hill. Despite the many people who rave about 410 Bank St we were not overly impressed. I wanted to try out Sean's which is on the street side of Ocean Drive for a casual dinner but haven't had the chance yet. Also for a real foodie experience take a ride up to Stone Harbor and try out Sea Salt. The seating is a bit tight, but the food is so unique and delicious. enjoy!!

Advice Holiday Party Location in Central NJ?

I love Il Castello's. I have never been for a party, but have never had anything less than an exceptional meal there. Good suggestion!

New Resto in Manasquan--- Surf and Turf Grill

I always found Mahogany too be very expensive for the meal provided -- has this changed? If so I'll have to give it another try.

Thanksgiving in Ocean County

In Toms River I would consider Old Time Tavern.

Recommendations for trip to Coronado & SD

Thanks for all of these great recs. We are really looking forward to our time in SD!
As for the b&b - I suppose it isn't your typical b&b b/c they can only accomodate one couple at a given time but it looked great to us. You can check them out at www.sdbb.us.

Any good restaurants in San Diego?

My husband and I are planning our return trip to SD after a very short 24 hour visit there on our honeymoon. Our trip plan was Days 1-5 in Cabo and then fly to SD - stay for 2 days and then make our way up the coast to Napa by day 12 and spend 2 days up there. Unfortuantely we got delayed from Cabo and only got an evening and afternoon in SD. After 6 years we are finally making our way back there to spend an entire week.
The trip up the coast was amazing and one that we still talk about it. I think it is something that everyone should do at some point. It lets you sample various towns in CA and decide where you never need to go again (LA for us) and where you dream of getting back to (SD and SF/ Napa for us). Then you can book longer trips there in the future.
If you decide to drive the coast I would recommend changing your flight to leave from the northern most city that you plan to visit (as it really isn't doable to drive say to SF and back in 5 days). Also there are some great B&Bs along the way to stay at - we stayed at one out on Catalina and another in Morro Bay.
Regardless of what you decide I think you'll have a great time! Enjoy your planning!

Recommendations for trip to Coronado & SD

My husband and I will be in Coronado and San Diego next week for vacation. We are spending 3 days at the Hotel del and then 4 days at a B&B in North Park. We have broad tastes so nothing is really out for us. Can you give me some suggestions for what places we just shouldn't miss while we are there? We will probably splurge on one or two nights, but otherwise we are looking for something that is moderately priced for our lunches and dinners. Thanks!

birthday cake suggestions

My husband had Tabletop Gourmet in Brielle make my b-day cake last year -- it was awesome!! The pastry chef will make anything you request and everything always tastes so amazing. In addition to her cakes she makes awesome blondies and the key lime pie is to die for (make sure to ask for the one with the surprise chocolate layer - she will line the crust with chocolate to make sure the crust doesn't get soft from the filling -- yummy!)

Private Party at the Jersey Shore

I went to a lovely shower at Piancones in Bradley Beach - I would check with them. Also, Simko's in Brielle has 2 nice spots for private parties - one is a separate typical private party room and the other is their enclosed sunroom room with a movable roof which is separated from the rest of the restaurant. Finally, my family threw me a really nice shower at the River House in Brielle which (as the name suggests) over looks the Manasquan River.

Best reasonable places to eat in Wildwood Crest, NJ?

I would second The Bayview for good wings, burgers, etc. (which is technically not in WWC, hence the full bar inside). I would also recommend trying out some of the places in Cape May and downtown Wildwood - in particular we really enjoyed our last dinner at Juan Pablo's.

wedding cake recommendations for Princeton area?

I would save yourself some time and just go to Mastori's. The cake is absolutely amazing!!! and as I recall from our wedding almost 6 yrs ago it was completely resonable too.

Carmine's-Asbury Park

We were not overly impressed with the food, especially considering the price. What was worse was that we were there with friends on New Year's Eve and at 10:00 before we had finished our wine and desserts they went around to the remaining tables and told us all they were "Shutting It Down" and that we had to hurry up and finish. I will never go back!

Isabella's - Asbury Park

I have tried out Vivas and I would definitely stick with Ole. The food was good, but not as great as Ole's. Also the atmosphere is lacking at Vivas.

As for Isabella's, I wish I had read this review before trying it out this weekend. Our salad was covered in olive oil and tasted as if it didn't have any acid or other seasonings to at all. I ordered the shrimp which was to be served on a bed of sautéed spinach and covered in proscutto. This was all correct, but what wasn't revealed in the menu was that the spinach is on top of a mountain of mashed potatoes. I quickly learned that shrimp and mashed potatoes is not a combination I would ever repeat. My husband ordered the pork tenderloin wrapped in pancetta. His meal also did not turn out as expected. The cut was not the tenderloin or anything we could actually identify. My husband said it reminded him of a fake rib sandwich (e.g. "McRib Sandwich"). Also, I noticed that it was clearly not wrapped in pancetta (since pancetta has a round shape it is easy to spot), but rather it was wrapped in bacon. To top it off the hostess had a screaming match with the chef in the middle of our dinner and stormed out and our waiter spent most of the evening playing solitaire on the hostess' computer. While I am big supporter of Cookman Ave., I definitely would not return to Isabella's.

One night/ two days in Houston - where should we go?

Brennan's looks amazing! Thank you.
How does Pappas Brothers Steakhouse compare to Vic and Anthonys (which my husband raves about from his earlier to trips to Houston)?

One night/ two days in Houston - where should we go?

My husband will be in Houston for business the end of Nov/ beginning of December. I am flying in on Saturday afternoon and leaving Sunday evening to visit him for his birthday. This is my first trip to Texas and although it is a short one, I would love some insight on some great places to go to in Houston. We love all kinds of food and since the hotel and flight have been taken care of budget isn't an option. Thanks!

Girls Night Out in Red Bank

I am planning a Girls Night Out in Red Bank for 6 of us (young thirty-somethings - some married, some not). We have dinner reservations at Teak and I thought maybe head to Red after that. I have been to both places during the week, but never on the weekends. How are they? Any other suggestions?

Wilwood Crest NJ

For family dinners I would also recommend the Bayview (big place with greay wings and crab cakes!) on the bay in Wildwood Crest (well I think it is technically in Wildwood since they can serve alcohol). Juan Pablos in downtown Wildwood is fun & good if you like Mexican. Rio Grand Station in Rio Grand (awesome crabcakes!). For dinners for you and your hubby I would search the board for some good places in Cape May (410 Bank, Godmothers, etc.).

Brielle Eateries

Great bar food and a good "go to" place when you don't feel like cooking. If you want something more upscale then I agree that Shipwreck is your place.

Godmothers, Henrys on the Beach, CM

Godmothers has amazing red sauce, but no parking. Generally you can find something on the street nearby. Definitely make reservations though!

Pitango Gelato in Fells Point

My husband and I spent 2 weeks in Italy last fall and ate gelato every day, so when we stumbled across this place this weekend while visiting MD we went right in to check it out. The flavors were amazing and certainly could compete with some of the best that we had in Italy. The almond was very smooth and delicate and I think I could have eatten a pint of the mojito on my own!! I just hope they consider opening one in NJ soon!!

Need Help with Cape May Restaurants with Baby

I would say that most things in Cape May are walkable. I would probably drive to Lobster House though since that is a little ways from town. You can also rent bikes and that is a great way to get around (and Lobster House would be an easy bike ride too!) As for Wildwood I would go by car (although I have biked from Wildwood Crest to Cape May a few times without too much difficulty).

Has anyone tried Island Palm?

I have been to Mesa Grill & loved it. I have been told that the chef at Island Palm in Spring Lake worked at Mesa for some time. I'd be interested to here some reviews about Island Palm as I am planning a birthday dinner and I'm considering IP for the location.

Need Help with Cape May Restaurants with Baby

You may also want to consider heading up to Wildwood for some additional family friendly places. The Bayview which is, as the name suggests, on the bay in Wildwood (just on the border of Wildwood Crest) has fantastic wings and is family friendly. Also the Rio Grande Station in Rio Grande has the most amazing crab cakes (not anywhere near the ocean, so don't go for the view), but is also family friendly. I would second the suggestion of the Mad Batter - great food and service (try the house frenchtoast -- yum!!). The Lobster House is good, as is the similar style restaurant across the street (forgetting the name at the moment, but there is a large fisherman pointing the way and I had awesome King Crab Legs last time I was there).

Finding a Really Good Bakery

I would agree with Mastori's - we tried their cakes for our wedding and loved them, but in the end decided it was a little far for the transport to Spring Lake. Their food and bakery are outstanding.

Buffalo wings in and around surrounding counties of central jersey

Jack's wings are great, but if you are looking for something a little south of there try Simko's in Brielle.
