You would have a hard time finding _________in Los Angeles...

The idea of having "fresh from the factory" cheese curds is preposterous. I grew up eating cheese curds at the farmers market in Madison. Two hours into the morning - three days after the curds had been made - they would still squeak. The only trick is that they didn't get frozen or experience too radical a temperature change (warm-cold-warm). Cheese is like wine. Once it is brought to room temp, it loses it's purpose when you re-chill it.

Need help with a selected "best of LA" .....

I'm surprised no one brings up Pacific Dining Car. I have worked in a lot of steak houses in a lot of cities as a server and I find NOTHING compares to the original downtown. Plus, for tourists, its VERY Los Angeles - it was in da movies, fer gossakes!

For your gluten-free veg, you might try Hugos. They have a lot of options for GF-folks and you can get a cuban sandwich, too! A WIDE variety and always high quality. Another favorite. is Fatty's in Eagle Rock. Out of the way but SOOO worth the trip.

new Hollywood Bowl picnic ideas

Street by Susan Feniger at 742 Highland Avenue (near Willoughby and Waring) has AMAZING bento boxes for only $25 for the bowl. Her food is unusual, rare, exquisite and she just started doing these boxes this summer! Cheaper than Whole Foods, really...

Durham: Magnolia Grill.... again?

It's four years since this above-review was written but I just want to re-iterate his opinion. I ate at Magnolia Grill last night after a shockingly difficult time even getting them to give me a reservation. The hostess was about to seat us in the main dining area and then was interceded by the head waiter who took us to his dining area in the back. He was indeed informative and enthusiastic about the preparation. However, he actually waived us off of two or three things we thought we might try. This is very strange behaviour for a world-class restaurant to do. I don't consider the prices to be astronomical for the reputation of the restaurant. But, as the restaurant filled up and the noise increased, I was not re-assured by the dishes that came. We had their "signature" grits dish that was delicious for a starter. And, then the Seared Tuna appetizer that our head waiter urged on us - the slaw the rounds of tuna loin are on contains over 30 ingredients including Chorizo and apple. I felt as though they were trying to hard. It was tasty but I was a bit overwhelmed. When our main courses came, I had the rabbit in a simple mustard sauce and the accompanying spring veggies were terrific. The Rabbit was excellent - simply done. And, my companion had the NY Strip Steak. His was also very good. However, by the time the desert menus came, we were so full and so overwhelmed by noise, light, so many sensations, that the desert list seemed just like more work to decipher what the food would actually taste like. With some desert items reading like: celebrity dairy goat cheese waffles with honey thyme hand-made icecream, etc. it was more of a literary experience than something that made my mouth water.

I guess, like a teen-aged first date gone badly awry, I had too high expectations and the chefs tried way too hard to dazzle, so we ended the night early with feeling fully consumated. I might try it again and I might not but not before I gave other places a shot.

Durham, North Carolina

Re: Magnolia Grill - not only is it over-loud, expensive but I literally had my waiter waive me off of some dishes I was interested in. When does that happen in the supposed "#11 of Gourmet's 50 best restaurants in America"? Too boot, they are absolute nazis about their reservations system. They actually WON'T confirm a reservation the day before (you have to call them) if you have anything but a 919 area code? And the food, honestly, was not as good as other places I went in Durham.

Durham, North Carolina

I live in Los Angeles, which you can assume as pretty good mexican food. However, I just finished working in Durham for the last 6 weeks and I had some of the best mexican food of my life. I don't know much about Tex/Mex but the tacos, burritos, etc. that I had in Durham pleased my Mexican co-workers to their toes! Try the Cosmic Cantina - open til 3am with liquor - just off of 9th Street above a dance studio. Out of the way but so worth it!

Door County (Wisconsin) Suggestions?

Wilson's also makes their own root beer which makes the wonderful root beer floats beyond sensational! May I also add that Not Licked Yet in Fish Creek is terrific custard. Don't miss it.

Seeking Handicap accessible gourmet food in Madison, WI?

Why is L'etoile STILL handicap INaccessible? What's the best chow in this town and can I access it in a wheelchair? I love to eat and I hear there's great food here but I'm stumped! Thanks chowhounders!

Best crab legs in Los angeles- do they exist?

the mustard sauce should be hot, which it is not if you order the petit or grand plateaux.... make sure you order an extra bowl of the warm mustard sauce. It is divine with their crab legs. And poo to you who say it is mediocre. I live in Hollywood and it is so nice to have somewhere decent to walk to since the Cafe Des Artistes is soooooo bad now....

Best dinner in Ojai?

I always want to head out of town for the evening on a half day and feel like I'm not in LA. I'm sure you can all relate. I think Ojai would be fun but I can't tell what's good with all the hype online. What's your favorite? Low end or high-end, either one is good for me...

new restaurants in old places:Los Feliz and Silver Lake

Greatest little "new" place in LF/SL is the new Cappriccio Pizza place on Hollywood blvd. right next to the intersection of Hollywood, Sunset, Virgil and Hillhurst. They are open 11am - 1pm all week, free delivery and walk-in pizza by the slice there is heaven, i think. Best thing to happen to the neighborhood in years. I say good riddance to LBE, I never enjoyed the food and found it too crowded to be worth the wait.

Looking for the best pizza in LA

Brand new in the last three weeks and Brilliant is the pizza at Cappricio on Hollywood Blvd. at the intersection of Sunset, Hollywood, virgil and Hillhurst. They have a huge delivery area and fantastic pizzas by the pie or by the slice in-store. Open LONG hours, too. Hermano, the owner, is there most of the town rather than his original restaurant up on Vermont.

Help in Pasadena please!

You might consider "Fatty's" in Eagle Rock. The wine menu is extensive and creative. The food is EXQUISITE and the service excellent. It is, however, vegetarian and has a more down-scale dress code/ambience. But, when I'm making the trek from the westside, I'm never disappointed by Fatty's.
