Recommendations for sushi close to K-town

I also recommend Fat Fish off of 6th Street. By no means am I a sushi expert but the fish is fresh and everything is pretty tasty. They do conveyor belt style so getting in and out quick isn't an issue. The decor is modern and service is attentive but I've never been during lunch time, only dinner. Its BYOB (liquor store across the street).

Baja style Fish Tacos in OC/LA

Joe Blowe- that is a awesome response!

I like Taco Nazo too but I wouldn't say that Hole Mole doesn't compare. It's Tuesday, time for $1 tacos (sigh, they should always be $1, i miss my LA taco trucks).

Started working in Downtown area...need lunch advice

GCM is not just for meats!. The fish stand (near the massage place) makes great fish tacos ($5 for two fish tacos w/ rice and beans)! I always see people order the 7 mares soup from there but I've never had it. I think more people are starting to discover it because they hired more staff and there is a semi-crowd.

One of the best deals in town is the Olive Branch in the Bonaventure Hotel. For under $6 you can get: a quarter chicken, tabouli, hummus, babba ganoush (sp), bread, greek salad, salsa, and chip. Everything is fresh and tasty.

Private Karaoke Room?

I second orchid. I went to an alumni mixer here and everything turned out great. We ordered a bunch of appetizers (chicken skewers, nachos, quasadilla, popcorn chicken thing), which were all tasty, and washed them down with some beer and sochu. The karaoke rooms are upstairs and there is a nice club/lounge downstairs.

Help! I need a restaurant downtown on Friday night...not the same old, same old...

I too love the curry. I prefer that the take-out location though cause they have that frequent buyer card.

There is also a new Korean BBQ place in that the center, which is pretty good (and cheap)

Best DineLA Picks?

I had a really good bad experience at Napa Valley Grille.

Reservations were at 6:45PM but didn't get seated until 7:20! The interesting part was that we checked in at 6:35PM and they said our table was ready but our party wasn't complete so I didn't want to sit (my mistake). No room at the bar and the place was packed.

Here is the good news: The host was waiting to sit us at a booth near the fire place but, the party that was there wouldn't budge. I appreciated this because they were sitting people outside and it was cold. As a consolation for our wait, we received free champagne, a free scallop appetizer (we got two appetizer that night), and a personal apology from the chef (who brought us our dessert). The host also made a point of checking in on us a couple of times throughout the night. Did I say classy?

To the Food: 3 out of 4 ordered the dine la menu. The artichoke/pasta appetizer was really great. It was full of flavor and the handmade pasta made a huge difference.

Mains: The swordfish was average but I wasn't expecting great things. I ordered the braised short ribs w/ravioli (not on the dinela menu) and that was fantastic (really hot too).

Dessert: I tasted the bread pudding which was..well, bread pudding. It wasn't bad by any means. The Chocolate sampler was great. It came with a cookie, ice cream, biscotti, hot chocolate, and a pudding/whipped topping tart. That was great.

Help! I need a restaurant downtown on Friday night...not the same old, same old...

Honda Ya on Alameda is a excellent recommendation. They have good service and its usually kickin on Friday night.

You might also consider e3rd Steakhouse and Cafe Metropol. Both have solid food but service is spotty. Their also in parts of downtown that people don't know about (which I think is kind of cool).

e3rd- The kimchi mashed potatoes aren't great (bland) but their steak (short rib) is good. The ahi tuna salad was solid and their avo tuna appetizer uis beautiful and good.

Cafe Metropol- I've only been for lunch but their salads are very good. Their burgers are average but they have a good selection of cheeses. While cloth restaurant with baked fries, which I wish were crispier.

Street parking at both.

One more Perilla review

Solid food with attentive staff.

The SO and I decided to do the tasting menu and we weren't disappointed. We were asked if we had any preferences, I asked for the meatballs, duck, foie gras, and the tenderloin. All were excellent. When I think about it, I should have let the chef decide.

There were about ten courses in all. We were about 30 minutes late for our reservation and were told that the next party was coming in a hour and half. The tasting took longer and they let us have the table for the night. I also appreciated the beer selection. I'm not a wine guy and they had some solid beers on the menu.

Best soup in LA area?

The Tortilla Soup at Loiteria (grove)...yummmm. It has a bit of a spicy kick to it and its creamier then other versions.

Beard Papa in Little Tokyo OPEN

I went at 6:45 after a great dinner at Honda-Ya and they were closed. I think they close at 5 cause when we passed by it seemed like they were closing. I really wanted cream puffs too!

Furaibo favorites?

Anyone got an update on whats good at this place? I went twice last week and got:

Honey Mustard Yakitori
Chicken Yaki
Chicken Wings
Grilled Tofu
Furaibo Chicken Salad
Butter Asparagus
Eggplant with ground beef/pork
Sea Bass

The yakitori was dry and charred but edible. The only BAD dish I had was the Furaibo Chicken Salad. OMG, it was swimming in their mayo/dressing. This one made me feel sick. The mayo was thick that it stuck to the lettuce so I couldn't wipe it off.

My favorite has to be the Eggplant with ground beef/pork. So so tasty. Everything else we got was average.

I feel like I should move on to Musha. Agree?

The one in Long Beach is closed. Tried going yesterday but all the lights were off. When I think about it, I don't remember the lights ever being on. Then again, they might be open only for lunch.

Izakaya Honda Ya - Little Tokyo

I went a couple of days ago after work and I have to say that I really enjoyed this place. I've never been to the other Honda-Ya but I've been to a bunch of izakayas in japan and this one is jsut as good.

Here is what we ordered:

Asparagus Maki (y)
Shitake Mushrooms (y)
Chicken Livers (y)
Meatballs (y)
Buta (y)
Tomato with Bacon (y)
Tuna, Avacado Salad
Sweetfish tempura (sadine size fish fried whole)
Agae Cheese
Sausage

We ordered more but I can't seem to recall. All the yakitori was was delicious, especially with kirin. Service was prompt and attentive. We got there at 5:40PM and it was empty. By the time we left, the place started getting filled with nihonjen, which I take as a good sign.

We didn't like the sweet fish tempura but the Avacado and Tuna salad was great. Bill was $60 but we ordered enough for 4 people .

Pink's --- WTF!

me (to cashier): "Can I get chili on that?"
Cashier to counter person: "can you put chili on that for him? He's paying $5 for a hot dog, the least we can do is put a little chili on it."

I never got the Pink's thing too. But every time I go I always wait in the that long line which makes me believe their is something good about it.

Dinner near Los Angeles Union Station (Train Station)?

On Alvera street El Paseo is good (not sure if El Paso and El Paseo are the same place). I had their Albondigas soup and gorditas. Both were excellent. Definitely doable with your $20/pp budget. Service is prompt too but I've only been for lunch.

ISO Chinese take-out in the Mid-Wilshire/Koreatown area

I think its called Chyn King. Its on 3rd street near La Brea. I really enjoy this place. They have really tasty hot and sour soup, their vegetable dishes are very fresh, and they have healthy items on the menu. They deliver too but I always order take out. they also have steamed fish with soy sauce. So good!

Warning- Stay away from the pad thai. Then again, its my fault for ordering pad thai at a Chinese restaurant.

Pho Saigon (Artesia/Cerritos)

Kingkong, I think you're referring to the Pho 2000 in K-town. I haven't been to the one in Artesia but the Pho 2000 in K-town is totally geared towards the korean palate. So bland....so so sad.

They have/had then at the Famima near roy's (Fig and 9th). I was amazed at how good they are! I remember seeing their logo at Hollywood/Highland but thought it was a new swedish coffee shop.

Fraiche in Culver City

I went on Friday for my birthday (there was only two of us). I have to agree that service is a bit static but not for us. Our drink orders (strawberry sangria and blood orange martini) took longer then average to arrive and our mains took a ridiculously long time to arrive, although our waiter gave us a update without us having to inquire. The tables against the back wall in the main dining room was really close to us so I eavesdropping. The table next to us asked for balsamic vinegar three times before he got some (first time the server never got back to him, second time he asked a runner and he said they didn't have any, 3rd time he requested that the server ask the kitchen for it). The other table next were seated when we got out deserts. We finished our and paid they were still waiting for someone to take their order.

The food was pretty good. Apps we got the persimmon and speck salad (good but i'm used to a firmer persummon) and the beer tartare. Mains we got the pork chop (it was bland) and duck confit (very tasty). Desert we got the cheese plate and pair tart. Both really good.

There are other things on the menu I want to try and the place is affordable.

Pit Fire Pizza

As part of their seasonal menu they got a asparagus, panchetta and egg pizza! Its so tasty. The aparagus comes out a bit crisp and the egg is still runny.

Their salmon panini is tasty too (bread is a bit thick).

'after hours' with daniel boulud comes to l.a!

Just saw the the Hatfield's episode (i think its the first). I really like the show but it seems like the LA shows are gonna have a different vibe from the ones shot in NYC. For example, Daniel and friends were dinning in the later afternoon. I liked the guest line up for this episode but I miss the friends of Daniel who tell great stories about him.

looks like people in this episode weren't close friends of Daniel which shows cause there doesn't seem to be a lot of chemistry.

No name Korean places in K-Town

Anyone know the name of the Korean place on 3rd about 3-4 blocks east of western. I think its new ans it has a pirate theme, i.e. black flag with skull and bones. I think its a seafood restaurant cause there is a banner in front with a set menu price that says seafood on it. I always see people there and there are always people waiting.

Best Happy Hour place to host mixer in Downtown LA

I was specifically referring to Weiland's spring rolls. If you like the powerful and enticing duo of sogginess and tang, then thats your place.

Best Happy Hour place to host mixer in Downtown LA

ZenCu is a really good rec. They have $2 Kirin (or is it $1) and good food and sushi. They have half off sushi all day and the beer special is all day so they don't have a happy hour per se. I went after work and it was dead so I think they would be accommodating.

Redwood- I really like this place. Dont know how they are with groups but they have a back room. The food is great (for a bar) and the drinks are well priced. The pirate theme makes it fun without being weird.

Bonaventure Brewing Co. has their new outdoor patio which could accommodate your group. Their happy is decent with $4 pints and half off appetizers.

Weilands on Flower is good too- its empty after work and they have a good selection of beers. Its a new space but the HH food is horrible IMO.

Nic and Stefs- They have a outdoor patio that could be blocked off. Decent happy hour food (steak sandwich, wings, chips, etc) and nice view when it gets darker.

Spring Street Smoke House

They redecorated the place and I think it has matured and come into its own. Its more of sports bar now.

I've been going for a year. The bacon wrapped stuffed is good. I had the burnt ends before and they were really dry. The sampler is good and the hot links always satisfy my cravings. I always order the sauce on the side cause they are heavy handed with it. I have to admit that I'm not a BBQ snob, but I think this place is very decent.

Sides- Baked Beans are awesome. Mac and Cheese is solid. The grilled veggies are a bit charred but I like it. The corn bread is a disappointment (dry and flakey). Cole slaw is sour.

Service on the other hand is a bit erratic. We ordered a pitcher once and the "waitress" only gave us 2 cups. We asked for another but she never gave us one. I had to go to the bar and get it. BTW, they use plastic dixie cups.

The Grove

Definitely Recommend:
Singapore Banana Leaf- I'm a huge fan. The laska is great and the noodle dish with the egg and chicken skewered (can someone help me with the name) is fantastic! Prices are reasonable and service is courteous.

Can't Recommend:
Moishe's: I like the family vibe at that place but its just too pricey for the type of food. The fallafal plate is like $12 but I can get a tastier version for only $6.
Thats more of a locals gripe, its a good alternative to other places in the FM.
