Where to buy Thai ingredients in NJ

Yeah, the Indian cash and carry places most likely have as well. But it's impossible to find parking there so I rarely go.

Hi Jenny,

Some friends and I have an amateur bbq team. We do some competitions, kind of like BBQ pit masters if you've ever seen that, but have done a few events similar to yours as well. Things like pulled pork we would smoke overnight beforehand, the problem would be re-heating at your event. Does the bar have a backyard they would let you use? Just enough space to set up a small smoker? Smaller items like chicken wings would be done at the time of the event but pose the same problem as re-heating; available space.

I don't have any suggestions for you, but I know we'd be interested. Sorry for soliciting you on a public forum, couldn't figure out how to send a private message.

555 on Route 1/9 in Jersey City has the kaffir lime leaves and galangal (frozen, i think). The vietnamese bodega on Newark Ave. in Jersey City has those baby eggplants.

A taste of Jersey City? Where should I go for a self-guided tour of Jersey City?

And I almost forgot Nha Trang and the 2 vietnamese bodegas in that vicinity. Get an avacado smoothie if you're not ready for "food" food.

Thai Groceries In Outer Queens

The only place I've gotten fresh kaffir lime leaves is the small thai grocery on mosco street in chinatown. Other than that its all been frozen or dried. They have thai basil as well though that ones pretty common.

Reserving basement rooms at Congee Village

sorry to butt in here, but is there someplace with a similar set-up to Congee? We did Congee last time for a party so I have to find some place new.

As for Congee the reservation was made in adance but not the food. Wasnt a problem except they couldnt serve us the pigeon. Drinks couldnt come fast enough either, but thats another story.

Asian with Private Party Room?

Need to find a place similar to the private dining rooms at Congee Village. Someplace where about 15-20 people can eat a lot and drink a lot. Any suggestions?

Just crashing in on your conversation here... Just moved to Jersey City and am also having problems finding thai ingredients. Theres 2 vietnamese grocers on newark ave by nha trang restaurant where i can find lemongrass, galangal... etc. Some Indian cash and carry places further down the road are good for fresh turmeric and good prices on more common spices. Aside from that just about everything (except lime leaves, which I can't find anywhere) can be found at 555 asian market on route 1/9. Lemme know if you find the leaves anywhere, thanks!

Ah, thanks for the tip. I may try piece of chicken for lunch today. Rudy's sounds good, too.

Let's keep 'em coming!

So I just had the 99 cent pizza behind port authority and it got me thinking about other bargains that may be out there. Let's hear 'em all!

34th &6th- Culinary wasteland?

I posted something similar to this recently and nobody responded. I work on 8th ave between 33rd and 34th and agree there isnt much around. I agree with the other posters about Woorijip though I have grown tired of korean food. As far as gourmet deli's go I prefer Amici on 34th and 8th. Its pretty big and the breakfast is actually a bargain. If you're in the mood for something more indulgent try D'aiuto bakery on 8th by 32nd or 31st (not sure)... Otherwise I'm still experimenting nothing I can reccomend at this time.

Salt & Pepper in Jersey City

this is funny as my brother and i just moved from brooklyn to the journal square area. I've eaten at Rasoi and Sri Ganesh's Dosa house both in the India Square part of Newark. I'd highly reccomend them both, had a curry at Rasoi that was really good. Been meaning to try both the italian bakery you mentioned along with red ribbon further down the block. I did try the Philipino bread house, everything I ate was entirely new to me and I'm curious to compare it to red ribbon. Aside from that to be honest I mostly cook at home so I'm trying to find a good supermarket. The large supermarkets seem overpriced as far as regular things go. The 2 vietnamese markets on Newark by Nha Trang ddnt have everything I was looking for, however the 2 cash and carry places I went to in India square were amazingly cheap for herbs and things like that. 555 Asian market on 1/9 was pretty good and seafood is very affordable there but their produce is pretty bad. Still trying to find a place that has kaffir lime leaves otherwise I'll just have to pick 'em up in Chinatown... Also if anyone could reccomend any good latin (brazilian, colombian) restaurants in the area? Thanks!

lunch near penn station?

i know theres plenty to eat, but it mostly seems like chains catering to commuters. Normally I'll walk to korea town but curious what else is out there. I prefer holes in the wall with great food to a fancy restaurant anyday. I like just about every type of ethnic food out there, so... hit me up with your suggestions

Bad Experience at Melt in Park Slope

I tried this place for DIB on Saturday. Wasn't impressed with the choices and didnt care for them once they arrived. They have a website that unfortunately gave a better appearance then what they are. Anyway bad food, bad service. Avoid!
