2014 NC Farm to Fork Picnic tickets on sale

No worries, meatn3...glad to hear that you are a supporter of our local food economy.
I only went into the explanation of the finances for those who might confuse it with other for-profit events in the area.

2014 NC Farm to Fork Picnic tickets on sale

As a participating chef for 6 out of the 8 years, I might seem biased by what an incredible value the picnic is. I don't know any other event where small farms, especially those not connected with the Durham or Carrboro market, have an audience as large as F2F. The price increase a few years ago was made because the previous $60 was only covering the cost of the event (600+ people are served) and this is solely a fundraiser for new farmers in our area. All monies after costs go to Breeze farm and their incubator program. The chefs bear the brunt of all expenses of the food, only beverages are donated.
It's really a blue ribbon event with a stellar line up of participating chefs and farmers.

Raleigh - best in downtown?

Why is pork popular on resto menus? Even when responsibly sourced, it's a remarkably simple way to add deep, complex, and delicious flavor to a dish. It spans a variety of cultural food ways, all doing so in a cost effective way. It's an incredibly versatile protein.

Raleigh - best in downtown?

Also: as far as I know you can't make a reservation for a small party at Poole's: first come, first seated. And unless you are there when the doors open it's usually a long wait.

Raleigh - best in downtown?

I vote for Stanbury. Yes, you'll have to take a cab, but the vibe is better and the food equals or surpasses any that I've had at Poole's. You can always walk to grab a post-dinner drink at Foundation or Fox's after your taxi.

The Great Triangle (NC) Pastrami-off

Isn't a Reuben with corned beef? How does your statement apply to this thread about pastrami?

What's the next best eating town next to Charleston in the Carolinas?

Asheville or Durham, you will do fine in either. A'ville has a much better downtown and is a lot prettier than D'ham. D'ham has better farmer's markets that run all year, so you have access to smaller producers that don't necessarily have storefronts (the area's best bread baker sells there: ChickenBridge, fantastic fermented foods: Farmer's Daughter). Coffee is better in Durham. Not sure bout the food truck scene in Asheville, but it is flourishing here in Durham. Fantastic Mexican/Latino in the Triangle, and Cary has a really strong selection of Indian. Bars (not breweries) are better in Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill. But I love the shopping and retail experience in downtown Asheville that you just can't get in any Triangle city.

Tough choice!

Wilber's in Goldsboro vs Skylight Inn inn Ayden

+1 for Skylight. tho you say sides aren't important: they are so much better than Wilbur's, and I find it depressing when a BBQ place makes no effort to pay attention to other things on the menu.

Lay's Potato Chips: Just 3 ingredients?

Fritos also only contain three ingredients: corn, oil, salt.

Eating out with a baby-Triangle/Triad NC

Like the replies before, the first couple of months are the best time to go before schedules become too set. I think you would be fine at the Lanterns/Nanas/Watts sooner rather than later.

Asheville BBQ/weekend lunch options

you should give Luella's a try: opened a few years ago by a Magnolia Grill/Nana's (Durham) alum and it's more than solid q.
I had a great breakfast at Sunnypoint; would recommend over TH if they are open on a Sunday.

What's Wrong with Raleigh? Why No Interesting Bakeries?

my take? Raleigh rents are just too high and honestly most people buy their bread and sweets from the grocery store. Durham, and especially downtown where most of the places listed are located, has incentives to attract small, independent shops and make the process relatively painless when getting started. Keep in mind that bakery margins are pretty low; there is a lot of labor in that croissant or ciabatta...and it's hard work to thrive when transaction averages are under $15.

Dinner in Durham/CH, pulling all the stops

I would highly recommend Panciuto in Hillsborough if you don't mind driving a little farther. Great, great pastas all made in house. Lovely dining room that makes you feel like you've really gotten out of town.

3days with 7yr old

no limit on price for either. I go to the city and eat every couple of years, but never with my daughter. not a believer in kids meals (sorry), and would appreciate farm to table recs too. I've heard great things about Ippudo, want to know if Frankie's is okay with kids. How bout Minetta Tavern? or Mission Chinese? Daughter has grown up in restaurants (I own one) but need some guidance.

Cape Gooseberries in the Triangle?

There is a farmer at the DFM who sometimes has them: Abanitu. Though I try to buy all he has during their short season ;)

3 Days in Asheville

Traveling to Asheville at the end of February for a conference and need breakfast and supper recs. I will be staying near Biltmore, and meetings run from 9-5 all days, so I will need recs for early and somewhat quick mornings especially. My priorities are good coffee, local sourcing, and clean meat.

Best of Hendersonville 2009

i grew up in H'ville, but haven't spent any real time there in almost 20(!) years. I live in Durham now and cook/bake professionally; I have to say it's heartwarming to read and hear about how the dining choices have changed since i was a kid. my first kitchen/restaurant jobs were at the poplar lodge and impressions (was that the name? on main street?)!
sounds like i need to get back that way and check some of these places out.

Kimchi in Chapel Hill/Durham?

I encourage you to get over to the Carrboro Farmer's Market on Saturdays and get some of Farmer's Daughter kimchee...i even think she does a couple of different kinds. If you can't wait that long 3Cups sells some of her stuff too.

bake shops, snacks and more?

i will be in SF for Slow Food Nation on Labor Day week end and would love some advice on where to hit some unsung, or under represented good eats. I am a baker from NC who hasn't been to the bay area for quite a while.
