Frobisher's Profile

A "Quickly" appears to be going in to the spot on Dorrance and Westminster where Tim Horton's used to be.

Trader Joe's - like supermarkets in providence, Ri

There is a Trader Joes in Warwick, 15-20 minute drive from most of Providence.
We also have two Whole Foods and East Side Marketplace.

There also specialty markets like the aforementioned Venda and Farmstead.

Best value for sea food in Newport , RI

If you are looking for value Anthony's is it. The food is "really nice" but it is not a special night out kind of place.

How important is a view for you and your wife? If it doesn't matter Scales is a great, relatively affordable, option.

If price is not a problem (as you suggest in the body of your post), go to Caste Hill. Outstanding food, service and view.

Artisanal, Hidden Gems, Hole in the wall Providence, RI

Would not go far as to call it can't miss, but if you are looking for a cheap lunch check out Jeanette's Bakery on Branch Avenue for calzones.

The name is slightly misleading. It is not really a bakery. They have a few small display counters but they are always empty. In fact the place is really not much to look at it and might even scare the uninitiated away.

All the action is in the back of the shop where they make delicious and huge calzones from scratch every day. They have a menu, but you need to wait your turn to talk with the guy manning the counter to find out what they have available at any given moment. He'll give you an idea of what they have left, what's in the oven and what the ETA is. The line often stretches out the door. Everything is good, but I am partial to the spinach, pepperoni and olives.

Second every Garris said especially LaSalle.

Setting aside the merits of Seven Stars baked goods, I think most would agree that it is not distinctly Providence or Rhode Island. Based on my travels, very similar establishments exist in the affluent, left leaning, neighborhoods of most coastal cities. YMMV, but I think LaSalle has more of a sense of place.

In full disclosure, LaSalle is a short walk from my front door, so I am probably biased.

How is Wright's Chicken Farm?

The chicken is solid and the sides are ok. I admit I find the shells and sauce strangely addictive and the heavily dressed salad is tasty in a heavily dressed tossed salad kind of way.

If you've never been and you are from the area you need to go at least once to experience it for yourself. But go for the total experience - i.e. the drive to the deepest, darkest heart of Burillville, the gift shop, the people watching, the massive dining rooms - not just the food.

Where are you coming from?

best corned beef to buy?

You should consider making it yourself. Its pretty easy, you just need some time, a brisket, pickling spice and room in the fridge. Mine will start corning on Saturday.

Angkor express - which closed within a few weeks, along with their Downcity location

Hot and Cold is opening on the corner of Smith St. and River Ave in Elmhurst.

Looks to be a cafe serving coffee and frozen yogurt. Hopefully both are as good as their website which is fantastic (even more so by the standards of resto websites). http://www.ilovehotandcold.com/

As a denizen of Elmhurst and the father of two little girls, I look forward to having an ice cream spot we can walk to on a warm summer evening.

Kitchenbar - Providence

Doherty's over the line in Pawtucket is among go to pubs along with the Abbey on Admiral St.

Cheese curds near Providence?

Simmons Farm often makes them. They are at the Winter Farmers market in the bucket. You could check their facebook page or website to see if they will have them on a given day.

PVD/RI * January 2012 * Open/Closed/Coming Soon

Not yet - saw an ad and checked out the website. Menu is very similar to America, which once occupied the space which is now McFaddens. Wonder if there is a connection. That being said, the menu did not make me want to rush right over.

Great news. We regularly hit up the Riverside one after carousel visits.

This is the spot where Stanley's was.

Angkor's downcity location has closed. That spot (next to Cilantro/across from JWU) must be really really cursed. In the last 3-4 years it has seen at least 4 different business all of which have closed within a few months.

Recommendation in Providence for affordable restaurant

I'll third Broadway Bistro.
Parkside is also solid and just on the edge of $20 an entree if you prefer to remain downcity.

There is also La Latiterie. Depending on what you order you can easily stay under $20.00, though they often have some offerings a step above.

Baccarro would be an option as well if you go with salumeria menu (Italian tapas), instead of the formal dining room upstairs. Even if you chose the latter, most of the pastas are around your price point.

Sausage Casings and Back Fat Near Providence?

You can also get casings at Bass Pro Shops, if you're local stop and shop does not carry them.

I have had good luck getting fat back at farmer's markets, including the winter one in Pawtucket. Most of the meat producers either will have it or will bring it the following week if you ask.

Newport milestone dinner

I would consider Caste Hill as well.

Dinner in Providence

Totally agree about Ten Prime - but with a drinking scene comes eye candy, which I thought might appeal to the young man.

Dinner in Providence

A few thoughts:

Rasoi on the Providence/Pawtucket line does higher end Indian. Only been once but had a great meal.

Abyssinia is an Ethopian place on the East Side.

Angkor is a Cambodian place also on the East Side. Not a dive, but not nearly as dressy as Elephant Walk.

Mosaic Latin American Bistro does up-scale Latin food in the Valley neighborhood. On our visit my wife's entree was outstanding, mine was merely ok. We went because of a groupon, not sure if we would go back without.

Ten Prime Steak and Sushi is downcity. Not in my regular rotation, but it might match your needs.

The Fez could fit the bill depending on whats on the menu at the moment. Mix of comfort food, along with some Asian and Latin inspired dishes that change regularly. Search the boards it gets mentioned a lot. Sadly their wonderful grilled cheese is now only available upstairs in the bar area.

Didn't the Tea Room have some licensing issues. I know there was an establishment on the Hill that the police wanted shut down after a melee because it was a hangout for Asian gang members.

PVD/RI * December * Open/Closed/Coming Soon

Drove by the Atwells location the other day. It looked like they were ready nearly to open.

Best Italian in Providence

Note. OP did not say 35 per person, he said 35-40 per entree.

Dinner/brunch recommendations in Providence (with a 1-year-old!!!)?

What's the temperate of your little one. I ask because I have two (now 4 and 18 mos) who could not be more different. The older one has always been great at restaurants. She is easily entertained and, relatively speaking, quiet. Her little sister is a whole different ball game.

Daughter's First Birthday Party

I have a four year old and a two year old. Here are some of things we've done:

1. Cheese plate and a few fingers foods. Finger goods this year were roasted butternut squash, fried sage leaves and lemon ricotta on toasted baguette and polenta squares with mushroom filling. The kids get their own cheese plate with string cheese and american cheese.

2. Pulled pork sliders and finger rolls with shrimp salad filing, and a crudites with CI's ceaser dip.

3. Bunch of finger foods. Spanish style tortilla, feta in olive oil, lamb meatballs and baquette topped with thinly sliced steak, caramelized onions and goat cheese etc.

That sucks. It just got to be the time of year (i.e no waterfires) when cutting across the city for takeout became a viable option again.

Anyone been? I need to plan a dinner for a retiring colleague and the location would be perfect. The menu looks right, just need to know how well they execute.

looking for prepared food/ take out options for family meal in Providence

If you're interested in Italian red sauce, I have heard good things about Shores and Lancelloti's in North Providence as catering/take out options.

The sign says Angkor Express, so I assume the original location remains. Assuming that's right, this will actually be their third location (they have another Express on Weybosset across from JWU).
