Old C. Tsar's/Ariadne Site: Any new resto there now?
No argument here. Though Harvard brews their own beer, while Brewer doesn't, adding even more to the confusion.
Old C. Tsar's/Ariadne Site: Any new resto there now?
I think it might be the John Brewer people, not John Harvard, according to the Waltham paper anyway.
Lunch help, American in the suburbs Saturday?
Not quaint, but how about Summer Winter in Burlington? Or Dalya in Bedford might be another option.
Brief trip recap
Enjoyed a lovely visit to your fair city last week and wanted to recap our food adventures. We did a wide range of options in a short time. Duff's for wings was solid and just as expected. Medium hot is how we had the wings which was close to perfect. Had lunch at C'est what. Food was good, beer was better. Sampled Al's cask ale and a stout (can't remember the name). Dinner at Yours Truly was the highlight of the trip. What a fabulous meal from cocktail to dessert. i wish we had somewhere similar in the Boston area. Our other dinners were at Jaipur Grille (serviceable Indian) and Scaramouche where the filet was meh but the elk was excellent. Although I didn't post here prior to our trip, I read the posts here and based our choices on recommendations I found here. So thanks to all!
What's Up With Tempo in Waltham?
We threw them over as a go-to place about a year ago -- haven't been back. Very inconsistent food with management that doesn't seem to care.
Birthday dinner restaurant
Lineage is right around the $25 mark for entrees, but it might be worth a look.
Advice needed for a special dinner! [repost]
I went to Erbaluce for a birthday dinner and found it fairly loud as well and it did not feel like a "special" dinner. The room felt odd and the food was just ok (based on the reviews here I was expecting wow).
For those who hate TVs in restaurants...
I shall have to give it a try. We recently tried Acitron in Arlington and enjoyed it.
For those who hate TVs in restaurants...
I am with you on this. I recently ate at a bar where 3 of the 4 TV's were playing sports and one had Bourdain's No Reservations on. That was nice. Another really annoying thing they do is when there aren't actual games on, they put those sports talking heads shows on with no closed captioning -- what's the point of that? Is the food at Viva any good, btw?
Restaurants Newton Centre, Highlands, Corner; good but informal
Besides 51 Lincoln there are not a heck of a lot of places that fit the bill in Newton. I am always surprised by the lack of options in that area.

I'm seconding that beef carpaccio at Scampo!
Also, fish tacos at 51 Lincoln

Wegmans to Open on Sunday, 16 October
I've never shopped at a Market Basket and never will based on this report of unsafe conditions. I cannot believe that the ambulance was not called. http://www.unionleader.com/article/20111018/NEWS02/710199999
Consider the butter tart, iconic Canadian sweet - buttertart's mom's butter tart recipe...
Ok got it! No recipe for the pastry -- I'm sure it was just in her head.
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup corn syrup (white)
1 egg slightly beaten
1/2 tsp vanilla
Boil about 1 cup water and pour over raisins. Let sit about 5 min. Pour water off. Stir up butter with raisins to belt butter and then add rest of ingredients. Fill about half full. 450 deg about 15 min.
Consider the butter tart, iconic Canadian sweet - buttertart's mom's butter tart recipe...
Thanks for this! My Mom was from Wilberforce Ont and I was born in Guelph. We moved to the states when I was very young but Mom brought along her butter tart recipe and the whole family loved them. She's gone now but I will check through her recipes and post hers if I can find it. I never tried to make her pastry because I knew mine would never compare! Thinking it was the lard...

Best Burger (and fries) not in Boston, Cambridge or Somerville
While I'm not thrilled with the bread, I do like 51 Lincoln's burger (Newton).

Panera Bread -- I like what I've seen. What do you think?
Here's the local connection -- quoted from the Panera's website:
Ron Shaich is the Founder and Executive Chairman of the Board of Panera Bread Company, where he previously served for over 25 years as the company's Chief Executive Officer. Shaich began his career in the bakery-cafe industry in 1981, when he opened a small cookie store in downtown Boston. Shortly thereafter, he combined his cookie store operations with a local bakery to co-found Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. In 1993, Shaich led Au Bon Pain's purchase of a 19-location bakery-cafe concept called Saint Louis Bread Company, which would become Panera Bread. Today, the Company operates or franchises over 1,450 locations in 40 states and Ontario, Canada. System-wide sales in 2010 exceeded $3 billion.

Erbaluce, Bondir or somewhere else for an anniversary?
I think Salts is a great anniversary spot.
Fiorella's post-renovation (slightly longish)
We were forced to go to the Met Bar (will not go back) -- they have valet parking.

Chowhound "bum steers"
I feel I was a victim of bum steer syndrome when I went to Erbaluce for my birthday last year after reading the rave reviews here. The room felt so uncomfortable and I can't even remember the food we had. Will not go back.

Myer's Platinum Rum, Martignetti's Soldier's Field Road - Boozehound Bargain Alert
I have experienced that as well. I do go with my mobile winespectator and check out the bin ends on my own, though.
