Gil's closed in Dubrovnik under a very dark cloud, now reopened as Restaurant 360

Srednja Vas is a small village about 2 miles from Bohinj on route 633. There you will find Gostilna Rupa and Pri Hrvatu, both good authentic locals.

We discovered Stonechat, a lovely place serving hearty local dishes. Nothing too fancy and great value.
Just off the high street, in the centre of town.

In Split, Black Cat Bistro and Sperun are good. In Dubrovnik, try Sesame, Restaurant Dubrovnik, Komarda and Gil's (high end) I think Nautica is way too expensive for what you get.
Also, the 2010 Gault & Millau restaurant guide is a dependable source and Croatia is part of the Austrian edition.

Sorry, I sent you off on the wrong track, was referring to your house. We have friends who live near Klostar, a tiny hamlet inland from Porec. Heard them mention they had American neighbors, and wondered.....

Hey CMDALD, would you by any chance, have a place in quiet countryside not far from Klostar?

Avli in Rethymnon, is a good restaurant but prices are high for what you get. I think Prima Plora to the west of town, is a far better place.

My work takes me to this part of Croatia every 6/8 weeks, and I revisit the better restaurants, as well as some new ones.
The best by far are Valsabbion in Pula and Le Mandrac in Volosko, both recently awarded joint first place in Croatia, in Gault/Millau guide, the well respected restaurant guide. Monte and Blu in Rovinj are fine, but not on the same level.
Use your car, you won't be disappointed.

Consider Rethymnon as a base, it's a great central location for visiting the island, has a lovely old town, and has quality restaurants.

Pri Lojzetu is an excellent restaurant near Vipava, it means taking a trip out of town but so well worth it. www.prilojzetu.com for directions etc.

You can check my previous posts on Croatian restaurants. Went to Croatia again last month and was disappointed with Atlas Club Nautica in Dubrovnik and Zigante in Istria, both are overpriced and the food was average.
For consistent quality, Valsabbion in Pula and Le Mandrac in Volosko are my favourite restaurants in Croatia.

What islands will you visit?

Konoba Kod Jose, north of Strossmayerov park.
Konoba Marjan, small place west of town.
Sumica, out past Bacvice beach and more expensive than the others, worth it though.

Went back to Istria and Kvarner recently and had a lovely time. Best restaurant was Le Mandrac in Volosko, a fatastic experience.
Konoba Dani in Umag was also very pleasing and it was nice to sample their own wine and olive oil.
On the negative side, Zigante is now very expensive and Bevanda in Opatija has let standards slip.

We only had one night in Dubrovnik and lucky us were taken to Atlas Club Nautica where we enjoyed creative and exciting dishes from top local ingredients. One of the better restaurants we have ever been to.

A lovely little place serving lots of fish dishes and not too expensive.It's at Kruzna 12a, Rijeka.

This is the place for a wide variety of Istrian plates and well worth a visit. It's in Kastav village, 6 miles north of Rijeka.

Monte and Veli Joze in Rovinj. Ulixes in Porec and Dvi Murve, 2 miles north of Porec, also Due Fratelli which is 1 mile east of Labin towards Rabac.
