Honda Ya to open in Fullerton
Thanks for the heads up on this. Now I know where to go after band practice!
shibucho in costa mesa, omakase lunch, how much is it??? cost
The $55 counter omakase included 2 pieces of toro nigiri and 2 pieces of uni nigiri (very very good uni). You don't have to be a student to go to the Anthill Pub, the prices are very good especially during happy hour (4-7pm?). Pints are normally $4.50, but they do a dollar off as well as $3.00 off their pitchers. You'll have to pay for parking in a UCI parking structure though ($2 per hour).
Hollingshead's is my favorite place to drink beer.
It's mostly college students. Pretty normal kids. I sat at the bar and reminisced about college, but am thankful I have enough cash to eat omakase sushi and drink craft brew. You gotta check out "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" as well!
shibucho in costa mesa, omakase lunch, how much is it??? cost
Hi kevin,
You're in luck! I just ate there earlier today (it's Friday) at the sushi counter instead of the tables. It came out to $55, I had an extra piece of saba. I was very satisfied with the amount of sushi to the price ratio.
I actually made a day of this, having omakase at the counter for $55, then went to UCI at the Anthill Pub and had a great Green Flash Hophead Red Ale and a Lips of Faither Cocoa Mole. I was killing time until seeing the documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" at the Edwards movie theater right across campus. What an amazing movie. What an amazing day.
Hope this helps,

Izakaya Bincho serving yakitori again?
Hi everyone,
I saw Tomo-san starting some binchotan charcoal and he had his yakitori menu out with some cooked skewers as a display. Unfortunately, they didn't start serving until 6:30 p.m. and I had somewhere to go before then. When did he start doing this again? How is it?

Sourdough Starter
you can get this starter for FREE by mailing a self addressed stamped envelope
http://home.att.net/~carlsfriends/
i sent away for it and it came in about two weeks. it's very active and has a great flavor. you really need to start with a very active starter rather than trying to make your own. once it's active, put it into a container in the fridge and feed it every month. i've used this sourdough starter to make pizza and boy is it good. a helpful hint, an overnight rise works well and what you don't use you can put into the fridge to mature and add flavor for a week. i made some pizza in the style of the cheeseboard pizza in berkeley and it turned out great.
hope this helps,

Big Mista's BBQ in Watts
Thank you Chowhound for pointing me in the right direction. I went with my girlfriend to the Farmer's Market in Watts on Saturday (really great prices on produce, they even had a stand Certified Organic). As for the area, I felt safe. I'd advise people to get out of their comfort zone and broaden your horizons and come on down.
Gosh the pulled pork sandwich was amazing, I love it they give you the sauce on the side so you can taste the meat and control your sauce portions. Meat was rich and smoky, not too smoky and the sauce had a really nice peppery tang.
Oh the beef brisket was marvelous with a nice crust, moist, and a good smoke ring. The wood used was not too overpowering so you had a nice marriage of meat, smoke, and just a little gobbets of fat here and there to really smooth things out and give a really nice flavor.
Ribs were excellent, I was able to get the quarter rack. Again, good smoke flavoring, and toothsome. Not mushy and falling off the bone like commercial places.
What really impressed me was the care taken with the smoke and the wood choice, I'd love to know which wood they used, definitely unique.
I'm definitely gonna be back again. The Los Angeles area has a bonafide BBQ place now. Back in the car me and my girlfriend were talking about how awesome it would be to get our wedding catered by Big Mista's. Yep, it's that good.

Good Rabbit?
Hi OCEllen,
You can buy fresh rabbit at the place down the street from this place Dakao Poultry (I forget the other place's name). This is FRESH rabbit, so they have a cage of bunnies as soon as you walk in the door don't get too squeamish.

Help needed finding type of Cambodian Sausage
Hi, fellow Chowhounds.
In college when I was your typical starving student I visited a couple of friends and they had brought this DRY and SOURISH sausage (not sweet), we dipped it into used a chili and fish sauce combination and ate them with mounds of fluffy and fragrant steaming jasmine rice. I've seen the Chinese lap cheoung and the Filipino longaniza, but I know where to get those type of sausages. I was wondering what these types of sausages were called and where could I buy them at (I was thinking of trekking into Long Beach, but actually having the name of the sausage could help me when I call around).
Thanks in advance,

Are new Tommy's burger locations as good as original?
If you are in Orange County, the Fountain Valley is a great location. Avoid the Westminster location.
I need a place to party!
if you are willing to go a bit further hollingshead deli is a great place to get beer

Where can I find Gulls Eggs?
Hi there annalou,
I was just in a 99 Ranch the other day (one in Southern California, the Anaheim branch) and they had seagulls eggs (but were salted) in the egg section. Probably call ahead and see if the nearest 99 Ranch Market has them next to you.
Hope this helps,

Haven't found any inexpensive eats in Torrance/Gardena
I am going to be bold for $10.99 you can get the best soul food in all of LA County at Flossie's. You get your choice of entree AND *3* sides PLUS a drink PLUS dessert. I recommend the mixed fried chicken and peach cobbler or the banana pudding.

Going to Santouka for Lunch
i can second the shio ramen ...if you want to splurge get the toroniku special shio ramen which is the shio ramen with extra pork (chashu)
i would highly recommend getting the large size and/or one of the sets. one has salmon eggs over rice, the next has negimeshi, and the natto is for the very adventurous (fermented soybeans)

Park Ave in Stanton - still ritzy as ever
My girlfriend and I just went for their July 27th shrimp dinner and let me tell you, it was amazing. The starter course was just the thing to whet our appetites, fresh fried green tomatoes with a crispy cornmeal crust. The shrimps went well with the mayo dip...just that zing needed. This night was such a success they are extending beyond the one night only to the rest of the summer. Call for exact dates.
Starter
Cornmeal Crusted Fried Green Tomato
and Shrimp Basket w/Tabasco Mayo Dip
Second Course
Shrimp Bisque
(This was so creamy and really distilled the essence of shrimp, comes in a cute mug)
Third Course
10 pieces of Shrimp Scampi
Creamed Spinach
Sea Salt Crusted Baked Potatoes
(huge shrimp, scampi was delicious soaked with butter, creamed spinach melted in your mouth. the baked potatoes were perfectly fluffy)
Dessert Course
Summer Peach Cobbler with
Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
(not too sweet and the peaches were fresh and juicy)
All of this for a steal....$24.95
