Storefront Deli - what happened ?

Good deli, but they seemed to have a tendency to coast on their reputation. The first time I went there, the cashier and the counterman (who were working four feet apart) couldn't agree whether they were sold out of the corned beef sandwich. Bottom line, Yelp and Facebook alone won't keep a place open in a bad location.

Fried Chicken Spot in North Hollywood?

Pork bratwurst topped with grilled onions, cole slaw and brown mustard. The brat was excellent and had a good snap. The cole slaw was restaurant-supply standard and a messy mistake; without it the combination would have been hard to beat.

This was my second visit; I haven't gotten around to the fried chicken. My advice is to order the sides as sides and not as hot dog toppings (I will not be trying the dogs topped with mac and cheese, thank you.)
I'll certainly be back, although I won't be giving up on Vicious Dogs.

King Arthur All Purpose Organic Flour locally?

Sorry ... I looked on the Albertsons website and they carry it, of course that doesn't mean they will have it in stock when you get there.

Here's the King Arthur Flour webpage for store search:

http://www.kingarthurflour.com/flours...

If you haven't already done so, try Gelsons, either on Franklin or Hyperion.

King Arthur All Purpose Organic Flour locally?

I realized after my last post that I was thinking of bread flour and not all-purpose ... I'm certain of Albertsons but a little less about Ralphs. Sometimes they run out and don't restock, you might want to call first. The closest Whole Foods is in Glendale, that may be a safer bet.

I wasn't aware it was all that hard to find. My local Ralphs carries it (Hollywood Bl / Western), as does the Albertsons on Hllhurst south of Los Feliz Blvd.

Dinner options near Red Line stations?

The ultimate thread on the subject:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/436632

Bottom line, the Red Line is a great tour of some of the best food LA has to offer, there are treasures to be found within walking distance of pretty much every stop.

Describe your ideal coffee house...

The classic coffee-house, where you can order an espresso and hang out for an afternoon, is a sadly dying breed. A very different thing from the so-called artisan coffee bar.

An example of the former was the late Psychobabble in Los Feliz Village; an example of the latter is Brū, the artisan coffee bar that replaced it.

No question that Brū has better coffee, but not only did they get rid of the soda selection, the better-than-average menu and almost all the pastries, but they covered over almost all the power outlets to prevent using laptops for more than a short period. (While at the same time they kept the wifi, for no apparent reason.)

Go ahead and dismiss the laptop screenwriters as leeches, but they're very loyal customers. Brū (owned by the same people who owned Psychobabble) designed away the ratty comfiness that distinguishes the few remaining true coffee houses like Sabor Y Cultura and Bourgeois Pig. It's as if they went out of their way to make the place antiseptic and uninviting.

As a result of which they have three customers on a weekday evening and not that many more on weekends. That's what happens when you chase away your customer base.

(The Psychobabble link below will go to the Brū listing.)

Antica Pizzeria - a bit rambling

Equinox Fitness - For Those who think they have eaten too many pizzas* ...

I hope Antica Pizzeria reopens soon, and hopefully a little more convenient to me (although the Grub Street posting says they intend to remain in the neighborhood). I've seen a lot of (well-deserved) love for Antica Pizzeria on Chowhound and elsewhere, the naysayers would seem to be in the minority.

VERY IMPORTANT: There's a place called Pizza Antica at Santa Monica Place; this is by no means the same as Antica Pizzeria, formerly of Marina del Rey.

* There is, of course, no such thing as too many pizzas, or at least Antica Pizzeria pizzas (which are small and quite healthy if eaten in moderation.)

Burgers with special requests?

If it's literally true that you can leave off ingredients at Umami but not add them, just order a burger with everything left off, and a side of the house pickles to put on the burger. (I've never asked Umami to leave anything off, so call first to make sure they'll do it this way.)

Otherwise, Juicy Burger in Hollywood* is similar to the Counter with a smaller list of toppings, and imho has better ingredients but cheaper.

11/11/11

I think the menu at 11 would be a bit disappointing for a birthday bash, just for the sake of fitting the numerical theme.

My favorite local small-plate places are Barbrix in Silver Lake and Palate in Glendale. It shouldn't be difficult to arrange an eleven-course repast at either.

Best Steakhouse in L.A?

There are two reasons why going to Musso and Frank's gives me a good feeling (okay, three, if you count that it's my girlfriend's favorite restaurant.)

1. The place breathes Hollywood history. The first time I went there was in 1977 as the guest of the game show producer Ralph Edwards, who had lunch there every day at a table with a phone directly connected to his office in case an emergency came up.

Musso's was especially known as a hangout of all the great Hollywood writers of the Golden era ... Dorothy Parker, William Faulkner, Raymond Chandler, Herman Mankiewicz ... and I doubt you could come up with a star or director of that era who didn't dine there.

The current owners have done a marvelous job of restoring the place and keeping it up without losing the '30s flair.

2. I've been ragged on this forum for saying it, but I think the food is underrated. And it's especially good for the cost. You can't go wrong with any of the daily specials, or salads. The flannel cakes (before 3 pm) are legendary. And I'm particularly a fan of their mac and cheese. I'm not a drinker, but I'm told the bartender pours a mean classic Martini.

If you're into the gastronomic fads of the moment, this is not the place for you. But how many tablecloth restaurants do you know that still have Jello and rice pudding on the menu?

As I said upthread, this isn't Cut or Craft. And I'm glad of that 'cause I couldn't afford to go to those places as often as I find myself at Musso's.

Best Steakhouse in L.A?

I am a huge fan of Musso and Frank, but to be honest it really doesn't belong on the price-is-no-object list. It's a great place to breathe in Hollywood history, to have a classic Martini and order from a menu that hasn't substantially changed in fifty years. The steaks are very good for the price, but they aren't trying to be at the level of a Cut or a Wolfgang's.

Pesto Lasagna

The only place I can recall having it is Wildflour Pizza on Main St. in Santa Monica.

Lasagna without protein is pretty underwhelming ... for a vegetarian main dish I'd rather have pesto tossed with spinach linguine any day.

Juicy Burger on Vermont is closed -- temporarily

It so happens I had dinner there last night. JB is a knockoff of the Counter in that you check off options on a sheet and hand it to the cashier.

Fewer options at JB -- sorry, no dried cranberries -- but better meat and buns, plus a medium rare burger is really medium rare, and they've never told me I have to settle for medium. And cheaper; $5 for a basic 1/3 pounder vs $6.50 at the Counter.

Last night I had grilled onions and Jack cheese ... totally hit the spot.

Juicy Burger on Vermont is closed -- temporarily

The burger stand next to the Los Feliz Theater has been closed for over a week, with no indication of the reason why ... furniture and equipment intact, CLOSED sign showing regular hours ... the kind of thing you see too often nowadays when management is dodging creditors.

So I called the other branch at Hollywood and Ivar, and got good news: they say the closure is temporary and they'll be open "in two or three weeks". I didn't go into details but it sounds like maybe an equipment problem. (Also no postings indicating a Health Dept. issue, they passed with a 98 rating late last year ...)

JB is fast becoming my favorite burger joint, I still occasionally frequent Umami but only on off hours, I find that place impossible at mealtimes esp. on weekends.

Will comment here when it re-opens. Meanwhile, there's still the Hollywood branch.

How about SUGAR-FREE froyu?

Thanks, as it happens they're pretty prevalent, including one that's walking distance from my office. There's nothing worse than going out of your way for sugar-free ice-cream/yogurt only to find out they didn't make that flavor that day.

After I posted I remembered that Cantaloop in hollywood has a pretty good no-sugar-added vanilla.
