Good sushi in Pasadena

Fair enough. Not everyone likes Nozawa, but I'm a big fan. Went to Nozawa when he was on Ventura and continued going to Sugarfish (which is more limited, but of similar quality at half the price). I also really like Takao in Brentwood, Iroha and Asanebo on Ventura, Kiriko on Sawtelle, Echigo on Santa Monica.

I'll try Ichi again and give Kimagure a shot.

Good sushi in Pasadena

Was particularly disappointed with Osawa. We ordered the live uni special, which looked fantastic. It also came with a lot of uni for $20. It was, unfortunately, pretty bland. The uni was certainly not spoiled but just not that good, either. Some of the sushi selections were good (halibut, albacore, hotate), most mediocre, some not very good (aji was overly fishy). We were impressed with the shabu-shabu, though.

Good sushi in Pasadena

Help! I've been trying earnestly to find good sushi in Pasadena or nearby. I'm on the verge of giving up. When I say "good sushi" I mean on the level of Sugarfish, Nozawa, Sasabune, Masu, or the like. I have already tried, and been disappointed with: Osawa (overpriced hit-or-miss sushi; great for shabu-shabu!), Yoshida (mediocre, overpriced), Sushi Ichi (nothing special, but only tried for lunch), Takuya (rice was sub-par), Noda (inexpensive but unremarkable), Japon Bistro (hit or miss), Matsuri (inexpensive but not great), Sushi of Naples (haven't been in a while after some bad experiences in the past), Oba Sushi Izakaya (better for cooked food, sushi's so-so), Zushi (fine for silly rolls), A'Float (haven't been back in a long time after bad experiences).

I have yet to try Kimagure. Is it my only hope? Should I even bother?

Where did The Clay Pit go?

Thanks, but that thread doesn't tell me where Clay Pit went : ) I already knew they were moving out and Lemonade moving in. Last I was there they told me they were moving, but didn't know where yet. Have been unable to figure out where they went.

Where did The Clay Pit go?

Anyone know where The Clay Pit in Brentwood moved to? They recently moved somewhere but I have not been able to find them. Let me know!

Alcazar Express in Westwood

I really enjoy the food at Alcazar Express, and take-out is great (though $20 minimum for delivery), but I have to say the service is spotty. They are very friendly, but a lot of the staff seems a bit awkward. I don't let this detract, but just putting it out there.

Overall, thumbs up!

Oktoberfest is a scam - Next year, you're forewarned: caveat emptor!

It was awful, I agree! I even had a free ticket and VIP admission and it STILL wasn't worth it.

Via Veneto

Saturday night, I dined at Via Veneto on Main Street in Santa Monica. Some friends and I decided to try it. We made a very early reservation (6:30pm), so getting in was not hard. In fact, the place was almost empty when we arrived. It filled up by 7:30 and felt like a real Italian bistro.

The food was quite good, everyone enjoyed their meals, but I must warn you about the service. First off, one of my friends came in wearing shorts, which is apparently a no-no at this place. Bear in mind it was 90-degrees out that day in Santa Monica. The waiter asked him if he had any pants then had to "consult the manager" about what to do. They ended up allowing us to stay. Thanks. Note: one couple was turned away at the door because the gentleman was wearing shorts.

Next up, the wine list. It's a nice list, but the markups are obscene. We decided to order a more reasonably priced bottle. The first three of our choices were "sold out" according to the waiter. He didn't even check. Perhaps they were popular because they were the only reasonably priced bottles on the menu, or perhaps the waiter was just being a jerk.

As was mentioned in another review here, the waiter also insisted that we order everything at once. We couldn't order appetizers then decide on our meals, all had to be together. What's with that?

Once we got over those bumps, everything seemed to go smoothly. The food was delivered in a timely manner, and there was no rushing or intrusion of the staff. Little things like a condescending waiter, however, go a long way to sour a dining experience, especially at a nice and expensive restaurant like Via Veneto.

Costco Wine Rec (Tustin Store)

Costco has excellent prices on wine, but I am dubious of the quality of handling. All bottles of the same wine are not equal. Based on how they are stored and handled, their quality can be degraded. I've tried the same wine, same year, from Costco and from other stores and occasionally found problems with the one from Costco. It's not every bottle, but enough that I don't buy wine there anymore.

Top Line Wine in Glendale has the same prices or better. In West LA, where I live, I often go to the Wine House.

Best Italian Restaurant in San Gabriel Valley / Pasadena area?

I recommend Gales and Celestino. I have not been to Tre Venezie, but my Italian (Venetian) adviser thinks it's great.

I cannot say enough BAD things about Mi Piace. Mediocre food, abusively bad service, fairly high prices considering both, and way too crowded. Every few years I decide to give them another try, and every time they fail to surprise.

Pasadena Whole Foods - wow!

That's my feeling, too! Went to Caltech then UCLA and I often miss Pasadena. I go back plenty, though. with friends in the area.

The new WF, wow! Is it really smaller than the TX one? I thought this was the biggest?

Coffee Shops in Pasadena

Zephyr is by far my favorite. Great relaxing atmosphere, excellent drinks and food, reasonable prices. If they had Wi-Fi (which you can poach from their neighbors sometimes), I would consider moving in.

Burger Continental in Pasadena---What's the deal?

Frankly, I always wondered if this place was some sort of money laundering operation.

I went to Caltech, and my friends and I would very rarely go there, and only because it was very cheap. It is an experience, though, especially if you go during blaring-loud-music-and-belly-dancer night.

Good Italian in Pasadena

I like Gale's and Celestino, as mentioned above. Il Fornaio also is consistently good but not cozy. Avoid Mi Piace... terrible service that's rude more frequently than not, mediocre food. My Venetian friends like Tre Venezie, which is quite an endorsement, but I have never been myself.

Looking for good muffins!

Try the ones from Il Fornaio bakery that Whole Foods sells. They're not bad. A bit heavy, though, so I wouldn't eat them 3 days a week, unless you want to get a bit heavier!

Sierra Madre Dinner

At the very least, you can get a great beer at Lucky Baldwin's. Pretty decent British pub food, to boot.

Looking for good muffins!

I love a good corn muffin, the kind I would get in New York all the time (here, if you can find a plain corn muffin at all, it is overly cakey, like a cupcake). The only ones I have found that measure up are Il Fornaio, of all places! You can get their packaged muffins at Whole Foods usually.

I have also been impressed with the muffins at Rumor Mill on Washington Blvd in Culver City (Washington just west of McLaughlin). I think they are delivered daily or more frequently from a local bakery. No corn muffins, tho.

Agra Indian Kitchen review (long)

I second the recommendation. I tried it last week and was impressed, especially so given their reasonable prices. I tried two "standby" dishes -- Chicken Tikka Masala and Rogan Josh. Both were up to snuff. The Tikka Masala was a little bit heavy, but still quite good. I was also impressed with the naan. Give it a try!

Agra Indian Kitchen?

I just tried it tonight. I recommend the place. We had Vegetable Samosas, Chicken Tikka Masala, Rogan Josh, rice, naan, and tea, all for $30! Good quality meat in all the dishes. The Tikka Masala sauce was a little on the heavy side, but tasty. The naan was light and crispy. Good tea.

Overall, I was happily surprised. Good find.

Terrible Indian -- Westside -- Sad

Clay Pit is one of my favorites, though it is somewhat more expensive than others in the area. As for spices, try the Vindaloo. I ordered it spicy once, and they weren't kidding around! I'm just a white boy, but I can deal with spicy, and it was hot!

Their buffet lunch is a good deal -- $15 with a tea.

Brent's Deli - Sad to say -Never Again.

I have been to Brent's a number of times and always had reasonable service, even at the counter. It's a deli -- coming from NY that is kind of what I expect from a deli.

If you think the service is rude or incompetent at Brent's, try Canter's. I think they pride themselves on terrible service.

Speaking of simple requests, I often go to El Cholo in Pasadena with my boring-food friends. I'm allergic to avocado, so every time I ask for the guacamole on a separate plate. Almost every time, same plate, and I have to scrape it off or eat around it. I just come to expect it.

Recommendations for cheap but tasty food near Venice and Overland??

Try Kathmandu Kitchen... it's right there, just west of Overland. Cheap and interesting Nepalese food. Can't get Yak in that many places in LA!

UCLA Chow: Recs?

Best bets in the Village, I think:
Tonino or Eurochow for Italian
Napa Valley Grill
Tengu for Japanese/Sushi

Wine Tasting Tours in Napa or Sonoma

I have a group of 10-20 that wants to go wine tasting in Napa or Sonoma. I'm wondering if anyone here knows of any tour/charter services that leave from LA to either of these. Another option is for us to drive to that area then get a charter tour of some sort. Recommendations on these services are welcome! If you know approximate costs, that would be really useful.

Thanks!

Group of 20 West LA Dinner

U-Zen was great! One of my Japanese colleagues was with us, and he actually goes there quite often, I learned. I let him order! We ended up having 12 people. We got a nice mix of sashimi, nigiri, rolls, tempura, and a wonderful beef sukiyaki. All of the fish was fresh and tasty, with the right texture. Total including tax and gratuity came to $330, no alcohol. Not bad!

Pizza in Hollywood

It's been a few years, but I really liked Pizza Paul:

Melrose at the 101.

There was also a place called Vito's Pizza on Vermont near LACC, but I am not sure if it's there anymore. Good pizza with that old-school Brooklyn mafia feel inside!

Best GELATO? Recommendations please?!?

I have to vote for Bulgarini. Talk about a passion for gelato! Too bad it's out of the way and has a rather spartan decor. But hey, sometimes you have to suffer for art.
