Kitchen Inferno - huh?

I watched it once and that was enough. First I saw Penny, ugh... then Viet came on and I thought, he isn't a nobody. I prefer Food Fighters where home cooks go up against chefs. Its much more entertaining and no Penny! Despite loving chef Madison, I will not watch anymore.

I am so sorry! I didn't even think to share the name. It is Ron's Cajun Connection in Utica, IL. Its near Starved Rock state park.

Its a small place and it fills up fast, but everyone is very welcoming and Ron is quite a character. Some of the servers who work there have been at the place for at least 10 years since we have been going. It was the only place I trusted to serve me frog legs for the first time and they were excellent.

If you can't fit in dessert take some home. The bread pudding (I believe his wife makes it) is delicious but sometimes dessert quantities are limited.

I'll admit its not a cheap meal, but I do like that he uses fresh ingredients (and mostly seafood), the food is delicious, different and its just a neat place to go.

I also wonder if the arrogance of the chef, ie.... I am so good people can't wait to get in here to eat so these people should be glad I cook for them, had something to do with trying to pass off bad food to us. Maybe he thought we were lucky to even grace his tables? My husband's carne asada was gray and boiled.

I hear about him coming out to the tables and greeting people, in our case Chef Tony had a smug expression and stayed in the kitchen. I felt like I should have been grateful to be there and eat whatever he gave me.

So different from my favorite Cajun place in Utica Il. The food is always stellar and the main chef/owner will seat people and even clean tables if need be. He is sarcastic but always friendly... a real character. He has a line out the door by 4:30. If anyone of you is ever out his way you MUST try his place! Darn, I need a bowl of his gumbo.

Again, I'm not sure if because it was a weekday and they were so busy the night before (we heard them talking about how many people they served and having to turn people away) that we got leftovers or last chance reserves.

Also, I hope they updated their menu prices. What we were charged was a bit higher then the menu stated. When I posted on facebook about it, their response was they hadn't updated the menu and they could send me my $3... no apology. That flippant remark pretty much of sealed it for me. Granted its not a huge amount, but still.

I just know, no matter how many people tell me it was good, it was the worst dining experience I have ever had. I'm 49 and we eat out every weekend and do research for places to go while on vacation. I just can't get myself to try it again.

Why would anyone go to Denny’s these days?

The one near my house does really good business. Its new and very nice looking. My parents eat there every so often and enjoy it. Lots of seniors in our area dine there.

The other that is a few miles further is an armpit.

Am I the only person who had a horrible meal at Georgina's? The rice tasted worse then the shelf stuff you just toss in the microwave. I don't know if he had a bad batch, but to me it tasted like it was frozen and quickly thawed. My beans were watery, I think I had about 6 in the whole cup and my food was greasy. My tortillas were dripping with oil and liquid and actually fell apart. The plantains were tasteless.

It also took them about 10-15 minutes to let my husband know they were out of bistec (and this was 5 pm) when the place is the size of a living room and the waiter stood next to the chef all that time. Oh and I got the last few pieces they had on hand of mahi mahi.

Again, maybe we went on a real, real off night, but I am Latina and grew up with black beans, rice, and plantains. I have eaten a expensive restaurants and from street vendors in the Dominican Republic. I've eaten every kind of Asian food out there. I can't get the love for this place. We were there pretty early, maybe he saves the fresh/good stuff for the later customers? Or maybe they run to the store for fresh stuff after 5?

Masterchef US Final 3 tonight--conclusion (expect spoilers here)

Ugh! I couldn't stand her. The judges spent this entire competition oogling her and we had to spend the entire season looking at her shoes and hearing about her being an aerial dancer.... yea, that's why my husband found a picture on the net of her straddling a giant p----.

"No Strollers — No High Chairs — No Booster Chairs"

I see that too.... the parents sit happily oblivious to the chaos their children are creating. I once saw two parents continue to chat away as their toddler threw food on the floor. Did they clean it? No they left one of the messiest tables I have ever witnessed in their wake. At least this was a casual family place, but still..... I was offended. I used to clean up after my son and he never even threw food around.

Food related television commercial failures

I cannot stand that kid! I am reminded of, and I do not take this lightly, some Nazi Aryan ideal. Who thought this was a good idea?

Anything New in the Leelanau Area? [Peninsula/Traverse City]

My manager who comes from Michigan highly recommended Amical and Red Ginger both in Traverse City. Though Red Ginger might still be closed. They had some structural issues that occurred during some remodeling. We seemed to gravitate more toward pub food places especially after the Georgina's fiasco. I think that experience scared us off of trying anything different, even though we are adventurous eaters. We really enjoyed North Peak Brewing Company.

Anything New in the Leelanau Area? [Peninsula/Traverse City]

I know this is an old thread but I had to answer. I had the misfortune of dining at Georgina's. We were on vacation, the reviews were stellar, I was excited. I grew up on plantains, rice and beans and this was right up my alley. I didn't care if the place was small, I just wanted a good meal.

First the food is over priced. I know the area costs, but part of the cost is the atmosphere. $5.95 for two diet cokes was crazy. Second, the food was just bad. Did we catch the chef on a (real) bad night? The rice in both dishes tasted as if it was reheated several times, it was old. The beans, while tasting okay, were very watery. My husbands carne asada wasn't grilled but looked gray and oily. The tortillas were greasy, wet and disintegrated as we tried to eat them.

Like I said, off night? Overhyped? Padded reviews? I was left speechless as I never had a more disappointing, bad meal.

Food Network Star July 13 Episode - Spoilers

I agree. That is why I liked Emma.... she has that soothing way to her. Why does everyone on that channel lately have to be loud and over the top. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the entertainment, but I grew up loving cooking shows and not everyone has to be a Guy to be good.

We watch that out in our area (Chicago). My only problem is they don't high light places in the burbs as much as I would like.

Boston Market.....my latest Chain Let Down...the Curse of the Bambino has moved to Chicken

I used to go often but stopped for a few reasons
- when the cornbread starting to morph into a corn wafer
- I saw that in the back kitchen, they were weighing the turkey to put in my son's kids meal. Now I understand they want to be fair, but the portion size had shrunk with that too. He was about 5 and would polish off all of his meal and look for more.
-when my meatloaf sandwich was burnt to the point of inedible.

Grocery shopping at Walmart...?

I used to in the past, but don't much go there anymore. I got tired of 4 out of 30 registers open at busy times!

I have had okay experiences with pre-packaged shelf items. But in the past, I have seen sausage and lunchmeat in the frig case that was long expired and once bought passed sell by date on cheese. When I mentioned to the register operator about the expired meats, she shrugged her shoulders and said "yea, that happens all the time". Really? I get an occasional product, but this happened on every trip I made there.

The Melting Pot

It is overpriced but for that one off special occasion its fun. I always end up smelling like cooked meat when I leave though. I have spent quite a bit of money for lousy food and not a great experience, at least here the food is yummy and its an adventure.
