Where to buy Italian Tuna?

,,, and Niccoli's on 16th Street, too. I've seen it consistently at the Cost Plus/World Market on Camekback and the 51. I used to see it at Trader Joe's but not lately.

Cowgirl Creamery Cheese

Pane Bianco used to have it -- don't know if they still do.

Italian Restaurant?

It's been open for a while now and unless I've missed it no one has commented. I have not been there yet. C'mon, chounds! Speak up! Is it good? Is the emperor wearing a toga or less than that?

Looking for a restaurant with great whole crabs

C-Fu Gourmet in Chandler -- I've had live crabs there -- cooked, of course.

oatmeal in a rice cooker?

I'm a big eater so to update ... I usually make 1 1/2 cups of McCann's steel-cut oats with about 3 1/2 cups of water and a tiny shake of salt. This yields three hearty portions of oatmeal so eat one, the remainder of which can be refrigerated or frozen. Either way, it's best to drip a little water over it before re-heating. You want it to steam a bit before you remove it from the microwave and shave butter and drizzle maple syrup over it. As almost always, less is more. Not too much and you have a nutritious, delicious and deeply satisfying breakfast. Go ahead and have a banana if you like, or some blueberries (but not in the oatmeal -- my preference). A cup of good coffee on the side works well, too, and a little orange juice.

What are the best Mexican restaurants in Phoenix?

Rito's is a local urban myth. It's a Disney-safe experience for gringos at lunchtime who would not go there alone at night. The green/beef chile is soupy and may even be out of a can -- it's no better than that -- served with store-bought white tortillas out of plastic bags. You have to kind of drink your burrito, tilted upward, if you eat it by hand, out of a foil tin, outside at a soiled picnic table under the hot sun after standing in line. Your Coke will some from a can, too. Enjoy!

Best Philly in town

DeFalco's is the best I've has so far.

Is Cyprus Grill really so very bad?

I live north of there and have shopped at the Trader Joe's 2-3 times a week for the last 12 years. I've never eaten there but it always seems to be busy, more so than the other restaurants at T&C.

Craving New York Food

Scott's Generations deli in Phoenix at 7th St. and Missouri is a NewYork-oriented option (not strictly kosher, though) and Karsh's bakery is c couple of doors away in the same center. You also could try Chompie's, which has at least three locations -- PV mall @ Tatum & Cactus, Scottsdale @ 92nd & Shea, Tempe on University east of Rural.

Pink Pony substitute (Scottsdale)

You may want to consider Don & Charlie's on Camelback east of Scottsdale Road. Good steaks, baseball atmosphere but much larger and more bustling than the Pink Pony.

oatmeal in a rice cooker?

My smart rice cooker -- a Sanyo, about four years old now -- makes great steel-cut oats. I use the same 2-to-1 water ratio plus a little more. The cooker has a porridge setting, which produces similar results to the brown rice setting without making a mess. I generally make 1 and 1/2 cups of oats at a time (3 cups plus a couple of ounces of water), which yields six large servings ... a week of oatmeal in an hour or less. They freeze very well (4 minutes plus on high in the microwave) and taste delicious with a few slivers of butter shavings and a very light drizzle of real maple syrup.

Da Vang -- closed?

I pulled in to the parking lot with a friend today for lunch and the entire parkng lot was empty -- no business at all for any merchants in the strip center. Da Vang had a "closed" sign up front with all the hours info left blank. It's Wednesday -- what gives? Anyone know? If so, what a tragic loss ...

Best steak and wine with ambiance

... and I thought they were out of Altanta ...

Kathy Griffin downtown PHX

I tried District at the huge "new" Sheraton Phoenix on 3rd St. & Van Buren (NW corner) for the first time yesterday, for lunch. It was pretty good. I had a roasted salmon entree with a shrimp/asparagus risotto on the side. My friend had some very cute crab cake sliders and sweet potato fries that apparently were delicious, too. It's a large space so getting in would not be a problem. The culinary theme seems to be contemporary takes on American food, well-executed and presented.

in search for the elusive sunshine sushi roll in phoenix area

Kampai is a terrific sushi bar with a solid track record -- i.e., consistently good sushi -- but it's on Bell near Cave Creek Rd., like around 29th St., south side of Bell.

Copper River salmon 2010?

I bought some from AJ's at 44th & Camelback 2-3 weeks ago for $28.99/lb. (Chinook/king) and it was fantastic -- succulent, delicious, prepared only with ground pepper, a hint of sea salt and the slightest slick of olive oil to keep it from sticking on a good, hot grill. It's near my gym and I duck in a couple of times a week to check things out. It's usually later in the day/evening, and the board says either "coming soon" or is erased. Meanwhile, I picked up some Columbia River king 1-2 weeks ago for $25.99/lb. and it was 99% + as good as the Copper River was. Last week I was in there and a woman bought what looked like a tired 6 oz. piece from the back corner of the case. I'm sure it was good but it was the last piece left. I was buying halibut that night anyway. A few days ago I picked up some "wild river (chalk board)" chinook that was labeled "Oregon" in the case ($25.99) -- it was very good but not as sublime as the others mentioned above.

By the way -- I've read that Yukon River king is among the very best because of the long, arduous journey in very cold water -- the salmon are especially fat and hardy -- any comments? Where is it for sale? It would appear to be a large fishery. Where can I get some?

If I could have just one Mexican place in Phoenix, what should it be?

I like both of these places a lot. It's hard to choose just one ...

BBQ in PHX? I'm from Texas

Yeah, kinda like A & J's BBQ on 16th Stree has this plastic-or-glass device in the middle of the room that apparently is not unknown in Chicago but is unique in these parts -- so are the results. Some people like it -- but it's not Texas-style.

If I could have just one Mexican place in Phoenix, what should it be?

Here is where the intramural squabbling starts -- to me, Rito's green chile might as well come from a can and is suitable if you like to drink your liquid burro rather than eat it with your hands -- the store-bought tortilla it is served in is even less worth the time, money or calories. Carolina's is a better choice for this style of food. Many will vociferously disagree -- such is life. Go to La Condesa or several other joints recommended here and you will do fine. You'll still be wondering whether you had Phoenix's best ...

New York's Best Italian Bistro Scottsdale, AZ

Sounds nice, cg -- always looking for a good Italian mom&pop. Since Scottsdale/FLW is such a vast, sprawling complex of endless emporia in every direction, can youidentify the location a bit more specifically? One can drive around in there for a half-hour before realizing one may be on the wrong corner of the intersection.

If I could have just one Mexican place in Phoenix, what should it be?

C'mon, Phoenicians -- let's help out here! Such a big city, boo hoo ... Ask a New Yorker for the best pizza in his little village of 20 million and he'll give you a one-word response.

Me? My answer changes from time to time but right now it's La Condesa (two words) on 16th Street.

Delux v ? Burger place

I'm surprised I omitted it. I tried it once recently and thought it was a good burger and a good value. Thanks -- also, Roaring Fork and Tarbell's, on the higher end of the scale.

It's PHX. Who brings the heat?

I don't have one. I love Indian food but I avoid it because I order way too much food and overeat ridiculously. I (almost) never take food home; I eat it. That's me. I used to like Pasand in south Tempe for a good Indian hit but it's been a long time ... I like The Dhaba but I can't speak to their heat quotient -- haven't explored it yet.

Delux v ? Burger place

You beat me to it. I flashed on Maizie's before scrolling down to your post. I had a green chile number there a month ago that was terrific. I've heard the Monday thing is a zoo. We navogated it easily at lunchtime. Yet another entry to support renaming the Camelback Corridor to Burgerberg ... Maizie's, Sunup, Culver's, Harvey's, The Vig, Houston's, Christopher's, Zinburger, Delux, The Grind, Chelsea's/LGO, Wally's, The Phoenician, Don and Charlie's ... any others? How about west of Central?

Graduation Late Lunch on Mill Ave. Tempe?

It is purportedly Jalisco style, well into the interior away from the border. Not hot, edgy, or nuevo, just good comfort food with a different approach than Az-Mex, NM-Mex or Tex-Mex. If you have time slip in for lunch or an early dinner before the semester ends and check it out.

Yes, you are correct -- thanks. The Arizona Burrito Co. was an early version of the assembly line fresh Mex places at Hayden and Indian Bend and I think closed a long time ago,
