WSJ: "Best Fish Tacos in Baja California, Mexico"

Hey Gypsy Jan, would you be interested in showing off your local food area to some turistas? We are hopping in the convertible monday morning, completely leaving thanksgiving behind in the states, and spending 9 days eating in your neck of the woods!

Never thought I would be in Vegas for New Year's Eve

Looks like the LVPD opens all of the roads back up by 3:30. Still a huge inconvenience if you don't want to stay up that late. But just thought I would share my found information.

Never thought I would be in Vegas for New Year's Eve

We are staying at the JW Marriott in Summerland i believe. One of my friends received a suite for free or very inexpensive, its what started the whole trip in the first place. So we are way off strip!

Never thought I would be in Vegas for New Year's Eve

But I find myself somewhat last minute going with 3 friends for a concert on the 30th, and we thought we would stay for the 31st. Which is of course going to be madness.

Although we are not staying on the strip we thought we would get over to the strip early, as I know the roads get shut down. None of us are interested in a club, but thought it would be fun to have a late special dinner. We want something fine dining, with wine pairings or perhaps a champagne tasting. Usually when I toto Vegas the entire trip is planned around what restaurants I want to hit.

Has anyone out there heard of any places doing something interesting on NYE for dinner? I have to make some call tomorrow!!! Many thanks hounders.

Nokia Theater - good eats nearby

Riviera definitely came up in my search. I guess the whole 3 dinning rooms really threw me off, but I do love Latin cuisine. Do they have a bar area that we can eat at?

Nokia Theater - good eats nearby

Hi hounders.

I am going to be downtown for a show tonight, and I am worried about parking since there is a Lakers home game and a concert. So I have been scoping the boards for a place to eat that's at least within a reasonable walking distance of the whole LA live area. But I really don't want to go to a giant chain with crap food and service. Lazy Ox and wurstkuche keep coming up in my search (and both look great), but they seems they going to be too much of a hike.

Umamicatessen is .8 miles away (a sizable, but do-able walk), and seems to be a viable option but I have seen some mixed reviews on here, and am concerned whether the "cafeteria like atmosphere" will be a relaxing place to put some drinks away before a show.

I would appreciate any other suggestions in the area. I definitely don't want to try to do a tasting menu, more looking enjoy a place to grab a few drinks, and some yummy to share with my fellow food lover. It would be great to park the car at 5 and not have to worry about driving again until later. I really hate driving downtown!

Thanks downtown hounders!

Last minute trip - poor planning! Help SF hounders!

I will be in San Francisco, staying in Nob Hill, tomorrow (sat 3rd) through Wednesday early evening. This trip was decided upon somewhat last minute, and since this week has been madness, I haven't done my due diligence. Normally I have my foodie itinerary finalized well in advance.

I have been trolling the boards yesterday and today, and have had some ideas, but after checking for reservations on open table for Atelier Crenn, Coi, Saison, Canteen, on tuesday night and turned up empty handed. And thats tuesday! So now I am really perplexed what I am going to do Saturday. I was thinking monday we would do Italian, since I have found many to be open monday. A16, Perbacco, and delfina have come up a lot on my search... I would ask which I should try but at this point it might just be which is open. I want to go to swan oyster depot, probably for a lunch probably monday or wednesday. We always go to Shanghai Dumpling King for xiao long bao, although I am open to suggestions for other places. We have no problem traveling for food, as I said we are staying in Nob Hill, and don't mind public transportation, but it has to be somewhat reasonable.

This is a celebratory get away. (I just passed the last part of the CPA exam) I hate doing thing like this last minute, and I know that we will have a lovely time, but I would really hate to waste a trip up to such a great foodie city!

So hounders... any last minute suggestions for
saturday brunch/lunch
saturday dinner
italian dinner, most likely monday
casual but memorable lunch spots...
tuesday night tasting menu that we have a chance of a walk in
and good coffee within walking distance of Nob Hill

Thanks!!!

Family Vacation to Cape Cod... where to go for good eats!

Since we will be there tuesday to tuesday, my plan is to head out towards Wellfleet on a weekday, as to try to avoid the weekend traffic, and stick closer to where we are staying (which I believe is close to Sagamore beach) over the weekend. I know we will be dealing with high season madness, but I i use to spend summers in Wellfleet, and would hate to not make it up there. But unfortunately I think that will be only one day. Maybe another day in Brewster/Dennis area. NO IDEA! I just want the kids to get a true cape experience... lobster rolls, clam strips, ice cream, at least that's how I remember it.

Family Vacation to Cape Cod... where to go for good eats!

We are staying at a family friends "compound", and I don't have the exact address yet. I don't think it is technically "on the cape" it's north of Sandwich, few miles from the beach. Yes I am terribly unprepared! I have been told we can get to Wellfleet in a little less than an hour.

Family Vacation to Cape Cod... where to go for good eats!

Hi CH nation!

My California family (3 kids 15 - 10) are spending a week on the lower cape (is that the correct terminology?)

I spent summers there as a kid in a different life when I was from the east coast, but haven't been there in so long. I really don't know where to start planning, but What I do know is I want some good eats.

I would love to take the kids for lobster like I remember it, at a small shack, sitting out back on lobster crates. Mostly I am looking for simple fresh options where we can wear flip flops and relax. We will have a car and don't mind traveling to other parts of the cap for daily adventures. And I am sure my husband and I will ditch the kids for a night for something a bit less kid friendly.

I know, not much direction in my request! The summer has gotten away from me, and I haven't even begun to do research. So the real question for all you Cape hounders, where would you take first time visitors to your lovely area?

Thanks So much

cheese plate and perhaps some Madeira

Hello all,
I am looking for a place to take a special birthday boy after seeing Rock of Ages at the Pantages. We are suckers for an excellent cheese plate and would like to take him somewhere he will have a good selection of cheeses and fortified wines. One of our favorites is Lou on Vine, but alas it is a Sunday and he is not open. We have been to AOC many times, and although it is a possibility I would prefer to take him somewhere new. Never been to Bodega, How is their cheese/wine sections? I dont mind having to travel away from Hollywood area, although no further than downtown as we live up in the boonies of Westlake Village ;)

Would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks and cheers!

Any thanksgiving suggestions

I was about to post the same thing. Our family was booked on the Carnival Spendor for Thanksgiving week... So now that our original vaca is no more we decided to bring out kids (8 - 15 and well behaved) to Vegas. My husband and I are major high end restaurant/tasting menu connoisseurs, but obviously leave the kids at home! Our 15 year old is starting to really become a foodie! So we want to take everyone to a nice (but not tooooo gourmet or conceptual) Thanksgiving dinner. No buffets, not "kid themed". Something traditional, but still special and impressive! Ideas?

Foodie Wedding

Hi Hounders...

I'm excited... I got engaged. Yay! I am so happy to be marrying the man I love. But now I have to try to plan a wedding. And every time I see a white gazebo and a "outside caterer prohibited" I get sick to my stomach and want to run to Vegas. Unfortunately I am my Dad's only child to walk down the isle, and I think my mom will die if she doesn’t see me in a wedding dress.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me find a un-lame foodie venue for my wedding that will not completely bankrupt me! For example, Cafe Pinot will cost $15,000 and even though it is Patina catering they still offer the standard chicken or beef entree. My head is spinning looking at all the options, and none of them seem to be me. Does anyone have a recommendation for a restaurant or venue to fit 80 people with GOOD food and wine?!?

Thanks so much

Las Vegas Dining Dilemma

Considering your goal of eating thru all the steak restaurants in Vegas I would love a bit of advice. I need to fill in a dinner on my upcoming trip with a steak dinner. I don't necessarily need the classic old school kind of place. We are staying at the Wynn, so I was considering SW, but I've seen mixed reviews. I've been to Craftsteak already... What’s been your favorites?

Opinions on SW Steakhouse

We went to Craftsteak (amazing) last year. Since we normally stay at the Four Seasons we wanted to try to stay on the other side of the strip this time. Next year we will be back at fourseasons and be eating at stripsteak for sure.

Opinions on SW Steakhouse

My Honey and I am off to Vegas in two weeks, and I have been procrastinating on picking a steak restaurant. We are staying at the Wynn, and were thinking about staying close to home and going to SW, but I have been seeing mixed reviews. Has anyone been there recently?

HELP! tasting menu problems (Las Vegas)

Debbie I feel your pain! April 15th can not come any faster for me (although judging by my boyfriends stacks I think he could use an extra week!)

Hope your trip goes well, thanks for the advice.

HELP! tasting menu problems (Las Vegas)

Boyfriend and I are heading to Vegas for our second annual after tax season foodie trip. Unfortunately we are having a tad bit of a problem pinning down our big night. Last year we were lucky enough to experience The Mansion... it was perfect, amazing, orgasmic... I could go on and on. We also went to Nob Hill and CraftSteak. This year the plan was to go to Alex, but alas, they have a private event the night we are open (a tuesday). Every other night of the trip we have a show that starts at either 7 or 8 so a long tasting menu is not ideal. My next thought was Guy Savoy, yet they are closed on Tuesdays.

Our other nights we are planning on going to Daniel Boulud, B&B, and probably N9NE (but I am still deciding on the steak house.

Another small twist. Last year we stayed at the Four Seasons, this year we are at the Wynn. We are planning to go back to the Four Seasons next year so want to stay away from restaurants at MGM or Mandalay Bay, since we can hit those next year.

Yes I know it is a particular request! Any Suggestions CHers?

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)? [old]

I am a manager of a wine store, which means I get to taste and buy all of the wines we sell and plan two tasting a week among many other things... Not to bad of a life if you ask me!

Conejo Valley Chows?

Goletto's in Westlake and Cafe 14 in Agoura are two of my favorite. Both not entirely cheap, but well worth it. Try the mushroom risotto at Goletto's... there is a surprise to be had! I just can’t recommend that place enough! Café Provencal has a small prix fix dinner available on wed and thur for only $45 with wine. But I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this but it seems like their consistency has been faltering a bit.

santa monica/venice area for drinks and apps

Ended up at Beechwood last night. The patio was relatively packed so we opted for the dining room so we could actually hear ourselves talk. We ordered the sweet potatoe fries and lamb meatballs. Fries were fantastic, nice and crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. They were served with 3 sauces, a spicy catsup, a smoky bbq sauce and a garlicky cream sauce, almost an aioli, but not quite. The sauces were a bit boring, but still provided a nice contrast to the fried. Lamb meatballs were flavorful, served with a simple red pepper puree. Nothing to write home about, but still enjoyable. The highlight of the night was the cocktails. We tried a few different ones, but ended up coming back to the kiwi drink, which had pear vodka, muddled kiwi, and simple syrup. It was wonderfully refreshing, and the hard little kiwi seeds added an interesting cruch. We ended with the barnyard cheese plate. It had Fried goat cheese, idiazabal sheep cheese, aged dutch gouda. The fried goat cheese went nice with the quince paste, but again it left me a little disappointed, and wanting a nice piece of eppoise or humbolt fog. Didn’t get a chance to have the burger every one is talking about, but will next time. All in all it was a great place to catch up with a friend, loved the atmosphere and the drinks!

santa monica/venice area for drinks and apps

Last minute recommendation needed for tonight. I have a friend staying near LAX for one night and she wants to drink an ample amount of cocktails (think mojitos or something fruity with vodka) and have dinner together. I was thinking about going somewhere we could share some small plates, maybe even sit on a patio. I would hate to waste someone buying me dinner and a drive to LAX on sub-par food. Looks like we'll be taking a taxi, so all of my ideas really fall outside of the area. My first thought was Opus. Someone has already suggested beechwood or Monsoon, but after looking at a few posts on here I'm not to sure. Any suggestions???

Thanks chowhounders!

Very specific restaurant recommendation needed!

Hello All!

I am looking for a fantastic restaurant for a very special occasion. Unfortunately it isn't as easy as picking a great food experience. I need to find a place that is fairly trendy with a great LA scene. We were hoping to go somewhere that has great restaurant with a bar/lounge attached or nearby. I'm thinking this is most achievable in a hotel. Half of the group are major foodies, and will not tolerate sub par food for the scene, but the other half needs a star sighting or two. (I suggested the Grace tasting menu at first and that idea didn’t fly) Bonus points if the hotel also has a great place for Sunday brunch and spa for the next day. I was thinking the Roosevelt or Viceroy, but wanted some second opinions! Thanks for the help…

Dinner suggestions for Vegas

I know this question has been asked a million times on here but I have one more night to make a dinner reservation for in Vegas on the strip. We already have reservations at Joel Robuchon at the Mansion and RAO’s for dinner as well as Bouchon for breakfast and Mesa Grill for lunch. I thinking maybe a steakhouse, but don’t totally have my mind made up. This is our first foodie excursion to Vegas and want to make it memorable! What one place would you add to the list? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for romantic spot in Westlake Vill/TO

Bellavino (ask for the patio): best food around!
Cafe Provecal: romantic in a kitschy way. I go for every birthday.
Galletto's: try the off the menu mushroom risotto appetizer!

Sushi Agoura - simply ATROCIOUS

I've been to them all from Camarillo to Studio City, and although nothing will ever top Katsu-ya I was very very impressed with Yo-Mama on Hillcrest by the Petco. Very creative rolls and fresh fish!

Charlie Palmer Steak?

My boyfriend and I are going to Vegas in June. The reason for the whole trip is to go to Joel Robuchon at the Mansion, but we have a few other dinners to fill in. The boyfriend knows the manager/sommelier or someone at Charlie Palmer and wants to go there. But there are just so many restaurants/steak houses in Vegas I am just wondering if it is worth our time. Opinions?

On the schedule already:
Rao's, I've been the one in Harlem so want to check out the new one
Bouchon for breakfast, I can't ever skip that!
Might hit up Fix after a late show.

Will report back on Robuchon!!!
