Casual kid-friendly eats near JW Marriott San Antonio?

Didn't make it to El Jarro, but the puffy tacos at La Hacienda were good! We had the beef, and we were pretty happy. Overall they had pretty good portions for the price, and the place is totally jam-packed and lively. Fun times!

Thanks! Someone else recommended that today - we're definitely going to try it. Went to Aldaco's for lunch today - nice patio, decent food, good price on lunch specials.

Casual kid-friendly eats near JW Marriott San Antonio?

Ate at Dickey's BBQ tonight. Does the lack of response mean that there is nothing here? :(

Casual kid-friendly eats near JW Marriott San Antonio?

Going with spouse and 3 year old for 5 days at the JW Marriott for a work conference. I know it's out in the suburbs, but I'm looking for good, casual eats nearby. We will have a car, but we hope not to drive too far for every meal. Need recs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Nothing fancy since we'll have our daughter with us. And maybe a few healthy options too - I could probably eat Mexican food for 5 days straight, but my waistline might appreciate a break here and there...

Thanks in advance!

Glenwood/Carbondale/Aspen area

Thanks for the tips!

Glenwood/Carbondale/Aspen area

Renting a house with the extended family (including 2 very young children). Looking for recs for both family-friendly dining in the Roaring Fork, but also for specialty food stores/farmers markets in the area, as we will be cooking many meals ourselves. Where is a good place to get fresh produce, meat/fish, good cheese, etc?

Civic Center Eats?

It's pretty great. Steuben's, GastroCart, Biker Jim, Pinche Tacos (now Tacos Borrachos), Deluxe, Cupcake Truck, Crushery, and many more. A few tables with chairs, even some live music. I've tried all the above, and all are good.

Seeking Steamboat recommendations

Winona's was closed when we were there...not sure why! So disappointed. Had some good meals at Sweetwater Grill. Rooftop patio at Rio was nice. Creekside Cafe was nice for breakfast. Not so impressed with Johnny B Good diner.

Seeking Steamboat recommendations

We are headed to Steamboat next week, with a toddler in tow. Any recommendations for good, inexpensive eats that are kid-friendly? (I've seen a few other posts about Bistro CV, Cafe Diva, etc but they look more like high-end dining.) I'm looking for more hole-in-the-wall or casual dining.

Thanks!

San Antonio's Best Margarita?

ex-texan, but i appreciate it all! love hanging outside in flip flops watching the world go by, but occasionally love getting dolled up for a night out. Love the margarita in its purest form - just a good tequila with fresh lime juice and a splash of orange liquer, but i also have fun trying all the newfangled and exciting cocktails that a talented wave of mixologists are shaking recently. particularly looking for margaritas and other cocktails, since i can pour beer and wine at home. thanks!

San Antonio's Best Margarita?

Will be coming to San Antonio for a 4 day visit next week. I've already gotten great ideas about where to get fed from this board. Where is a good place to get watered?

Fuel - Denver

nothing lacking. made with mozzarella and prosciutto - lots of tasty flavors - just not as mind blowing as the others, imo. suffering just from comparison to absolute amazingness.

Fuel - Denver

Had a fantastic meal at Fuel last night. I know they've been open for awhile, but it took me this long to make it there, I'm now sorry to say. We went for happy hour (5-6:30). An amazing blood orange margarita was the standout among the several cocktails we tried. I know they change the menu seasonally, but the burrata plate was absolutely amazing - came with broccolini and a mixture of capers, currants, parmesan? something else - otherwordly. ( am a devoted fan of Osteria Marco's burrata - it's probably better for the purists, but the plate at Fuel was all the more amazing for its accompaniments). Also fantastic was the farro salad and the spinach lasagnette - one healthy and making the most of incredible but simple ingredients, the other hearty, warm, and flavorful for a cool night. Tried the radicchio involtini also - good, but I wasn't as blown away by it as by the other plates. Service was very personable and attentive. Dining room is small - quiet enough for conversation, but lively enough for fun. Two desserts on the menu - a vanilla bean pannacotta, and a salted chocolate tart. I had my heart set on the chocolate, but I was told that it wasn't quite ready yet - we were eating quite early. We ordered the pannacotta, which was still amazing, but as the kitchen knew that I had to have my chocolate fix, the sent us a whoopie pie on the house with their apologies. :) Those special touches make for a happy customer - one who hopes to return to Fuel soon.

Udon in Denver?

I love the Nabeyaki Udon at Sushi Den (or Izakaya, or Den Deli). Not sure Oshima has udon - I've only had the ramen there. I love the ramen at Bones too, but never had the udon.

Heaven Star a step (stairway? heh) up from Super Star

I too am in love with Heaven Star. Have been here several times already and think it's the best in town.

Bones (DEN) - Did anyone try it at the opening last night?

Anyone else been yet? curious to hear what others think.

Marco's Coal Fired Pizzeria Denver Colorado

I didn't ask - we did make it known that we would rather be seated in the main dining area but were told it wasn't an option. Dining room had maybe 3 or 4 parties being served - largely empty! Owner was standing by and didn't intervene. We actually walked out before even being seated and had a very pleasant dinner at nearby Buenos Aires Pizzeria - actually very kid friendly indeed!

Chinese Dumpling House (Boulder)

Thanks, Claire, but I stopped blogging quite awhile ago. The demands of a full-time job and a toddler are a bit too much for me to continue!! Thanks anyway.

New mom looking for kid-friendly, chow-worthy grub (Denver)

Don't know if it's not kid-friendly or not group-friendly, but see my recent post on my experience at Marco's!!! Not going back.

However, since my original post, I've visited Steuben's with my girl a few times - they've been great!

Marco's Coal Fired Pizzeria Denver Colorado

Just wanted to report on an experience we had here this past weekend on a Saturday night. I've been here 3 or 4 other times with just a small group and have been pleased with the food, atmosphere, and overall experience. However, this time, I arrived with my toddler daughter to meet another family with 2 kids - a party requiring 6 chairs and a high chair. We were greeted promptly, but despite the empty dining room at 5pm on Saturday, we were told we would have to wait to be seated in the basement. I never even knew they had a basement! After waiting about 15 minutes, which seemed like a long time given the relatively empty restaurant, we were led downstairs to a dark, empty, depressing room with 2 circle tables and one square table haphazardly thrown together to seat our party. A large screen TV was the only decor in the room. Needless to say, we were less than pleased and made our displeasure known, but we were not given any option of being seated in the main dining room.

Again, I understand that owner Mark Dym wants to save his restaurant's prime seating on Saturday night for parties without children. But as he stood by and said nothing that evening as we walked out of his restaurant, he's essentially lost my business forever, despite the fact that I did really like his pizza.

Bottom line - this place has been touted for so many reasons, and many have reported it to be kid-friendly. But I'll never go back.

Too harsh?

Bones (DEN) - Did anyone try it at the opening last night?

I did. The place, as expected, needs some time to figure itself out a bit I think - I only say that because I expected a more casual restaurant atmosphere. The service, though lovely, was a bit too formal in style and didn't seem to really fit the noodle bar idea IMO. I think I'd be more comfortable if they'd loosen up a bit, or maybe next time I'll sit at the bar instead of a table. Or maybe it was just opening night jitters for the waitstaff. Cocktails were overpriced and not very good, but best of the three I tried was the green tea one. The food however, was excellent - a few standout appetizers were the black cod/pork belly tempura, roasted bone marrow (if you're into that sort of thing), fried shishito peppers, and pork belly buns (definitely preferred them to the suckling pig buns but who doesn't like pork belly?). These apps ranged about $7-12 as I recall. The pickled vegetables were good also. For mains, I had the ramen with lobster and edamame - it was wonderful though not what I expected at all. It was very rich, and more French/Italian-influenced (if you subbed out the edamame for peas) really than Asian, with more of a sauce than a soup, which is more what you'd expect from a true Asian ramen. It was $16, but with a decent amount of perfectly done lobster. I tried my neighbor's udon - also good, and another neighbors spicy egg noodles with chicken - this one actually probably the most "Asian" of the bunch, and only about $9, I think.

Didn't try the soft serve ice cream, priced at $5 a serving. I was full, but I also thought that was a bit much for soft serve. If anyone tries it, let me know if it's worth it!

As an aside, I was there with my toddler daughter and extended family (6 of us in all). I'm a fan of Frank's restaurants and haven't been able to hit Mizuna or Luca lately, and I was thrilled when I thought he was opening another "casual" restaurant, and a noodle bar at that! Thought it might be relatively kid-friendly, like Osteria, but the place again felt a bit too formal for me to feel comfortable bringing her, too quiet maybe - and that may change as it gets popular. It's also NOT a good place for groups - anything more than 4 is hard to seat, and there are only a few tables. Frank's wife Jackie was a trooper however and agreed to pull 3 tables together just for our group - Thanks!! I'd recommend dining with just one other person and sitting at the bar, where you can watch the chef at work!

All in all, I'd definitely go back, but maybe on a date night with the hubby instead! And I'll drink wine instead...

Chinese Dumpling House (Boulder)

Yes, I've been to Lao Wang quite a few times and have never been disappointed (except in the price, and even then it's only expensive compared to most big city Chinatowns). Don't go for atmosphere, but the xiao long bao, kwo tie, and noodles are the best i've found in denver.

New mom looking for kid-friendly, chow-worthy grub (Denver)

Chowhound who loves eating out has recently has adopted a very beautiful and active little toddler. Gone (at least for awhile) are the days of 3 hour meals at Frasca or Mizuna, lingering over french press coffee at Vendome, or basically eating anything these days except for peanut butter on toast. Any parents out there with good suggestions as to where to go with kids? Somewhere where the noise drowns out her screams, the service is fairly quick (patience is not a virtue of most toddlers), and the food offerings do not include chicken nuggets? Liquor license is a must. :) Thanks.

D Bar Desserts review (Denver)

I've also loved D-bar. It's very near work for me, so I've been there many times for lunch, or just to buy stuff out of the case. I've been very pleased with the kobe sliders, love the paninis, and the mac and cheese is good too. Prices are excellent for the quality. Desserts are great as well - i've really enjoyed some of the cupcakes, the peanut butter cup, and the cookies. I agree that service needs a bit of work, but other than that, i love the place.

Near Denver Airport

Does anyone know of a decent place near the airport? I have to pick up two people 2 hours apart, and I'd like to take the early arrival out to dinner before we have to go back to pick up the other person.

Chocolates in Denver? [Moved from Midwest Board]

there's also wen chocolates on Platte, downtown by REI - i've always been impressed... more on the truffle end of the spectrum, but some inventive flavors nonetheless...

Anyone been to Mataam Fez, DEN?

It's been about 4 years ago, and my recollections are fuzzy. Remember it was a fun experience, but seeing as how I never went back, it must not have been outstanding.

Tasting menu's in Denver/Boulder?

I can also recommend the tasting menus at Mizuna and Luca, though they have recently gone up in price. Luca's used to be a very reasonable $55; it's now $10 more, which is still good. (and still VERY reasonable compared to Per Se!!) On a different note, I tried the omakase menu at Sushi Sasa the other night - you can choose a dollar amount ($60, $80, $100 or more) and just sit back and let Wayne feed you. Gorgeous.

Denver - Good spots in/near Congress Park?

To add to Megiac's list, Potager is in the area - serving lots of fresh, seasonal stuff in a great atmosphere. A bit on the pricey side, but good for once in awhile.
