Zucchini flowers?

Michaelangelos at woodbine and hwy 7 had them about 2-3 weeks ago (most likely imported). They also where very expensive at $2-3 EACH.

best bet is to wait till they are in season.

ISO: Whole Freeze Dried Corn Kernels

Go to LeBaron, that is where I got my supply, large tin (probably last me a year), for $30. Plenty in stock, and no membership needed.

Looking for Shun brand kitchen knives

Slice and Sear (AKA the healthy butcher) might have the best prices in the city.
http://www.sliceandsear.com/brands/Shun-Kai.html

Personally I wouldn't recommend buying online, you have to go feel knives in your hand. I dislike the feel of Shun's and wouldn't recommend them, but everyone's grip and preferences are different.

$5 meal?

You could get TWO Viet Subs in China town for $5 (spadina or broadview)... Broadview I would go to Roses, on Spadina there are a few options but I usually stick with the two just north of dundas on the west side...

Also speaking of Chinatown I'm sure King's Noodle has a $5 plate.

ISO oils and vinegars

Have you tried venturing to the Cheese Boutique for flavored oils? They have so many oils/vinegar I am sure you can find something similar there. Obviously these would be pre-bottled brand. I know of the type you're talking about, in Germany there are lots of stores that sell infused oils (mostly go hand in hand with tea shops there). But I have never come across a store here. Maybe check a natural food/health store?

ISO dried French Puy Lentils in GTA....

Not to be a menace but Puy lentils aren't from Bordeaux and don't grown in Alpine soil or climate.... also bordeaux isn't even close to the french alps. However you are correct the do have AOC status and the region is limited to central southern france.

pitas and tortillas from scratch

Best pocket pitta in the city, sababa's (bathurst and steeles)
http://www.sababafoods.com/index_files/Page4665.htm

Pick up a falafel while your there too

As for tortillas there are a couple places in kensington market t that sell fresh made yellow or white corn tortillas, but I forget the names, just know it when I get there.

Beef and veal cheeks, pork jowls

Sanagan's is not in SLM its in kensington market.
Here is a link to SLM vendors
http://www.stlawrencemarket.com/directory

Whitehouse Meats usually has off cuts.

Beef and veal cheeks, pork jowls

I would go with Sanagan's, every time I have gotten them from the Healthy Butchers they have been frozen. Sanagan's has only given them to me fresh.
Also if you want really high quality ones you might want to check out Famu, but order ahead again.

COSTCO treasures [Moved from Ontario]

I have never bought fish from costco, from what I have seen most of the fillets are skinned. I prefer usually most of my fish with the skin on. How is the freshness/value? Or do you buy frozen fillets?

COSTCO treasures [Moved from Ontario]

What brand falafel balls do you buy? Refrigerated or Frozen?
I have always wanted to try them, but can't seem how they can compare to homemade or dry mix packages.

COSTCO treasures [Moved from Ontario]

Every Trip to Costco I usually pick up

Pomegranate Seeds 2 in a package ~$7
Arthur's Smoothies 2 in a package ~$7
Liberte Greek Yogurt 2 in a package ~$7
Kosher Chickens (2 in a package Yorkdale) or 3 Whole Chickens Other Stores ~$20
Chewing Gum ~$13
Garden Fresh Guac ~$5

First apartment - best cookware to purchase

Might I suggest this package,
http://www.sliceandsear.com/the-essentials-collection-ultimate-cookware-set/

For a juicer I would check out caynes hamilton beach model, it is constantly ranked #2 in consumer reports behind breville and is only $70 http://www.cayneshousewares.com/product.php?productid=227&cat=0&page=1

Edit Note: these prices/stores are in Canada, however I am sure you can find similar priced items in the states.

Looking for a KOSHER brisket

More expensive than $330/kg @ Famu? Cause that is insanely expensive in my books.

Looking for a KOSHER brisket

Call in a special order with Hartmans? I'm sure they can set you up with something. http://www.hartmanskosher.com/

Affordable tasting or prix fix menus in Toronto

$25 three courses http://julesbistrocafe.com/
$50 six courses http://www.louvrier.ca/

ISO pastrami or corned beef, not Montreal smoked meat

MSM is basically the same as Pastrami (Pastrami is from NYC and is usually sweeter). MSM tends to have a thicker and more predominant spice rub 'crust'. Taste wise I would argue that a majority of people could not tell the difference between the two at a store deli counter on a blind taste test.

Corned Beef is basically the non-smoked non-rubbed version of the two. Unless you are looking for canned corned beef.

Almost any deli counter in the City will cart all three all at roughly the same cost.

Tongue

Check out European meats b4 the close in April, I wouldn't be surprised if they carried it in their cold cut section (back counter).... Or just call them up [(416) 596-8691] and ask if they carry 'pickled tongue'.

Tongue

Centre Street Deli in Thornhill...
Just about any 'jewish' style deli should have it on the menu... or in the meat counter for takeout.

Restaurant recommendation with tasting menu for foodie boyfriend's birthday

No Japanese, but L'Ouvrier has a $50 6 course tasting menu +$40 with wine pairings... might be the best deal in the city. http://www.louvrier.ca/

Pizzeria Libretto - Awesome pizza!!!

I have never had to wait very long (maybe 10min max) for a table, then again I usually go at around 9pm, last time I went was a Thursday night at 9:30pm for a table for 6 and we had no wait.

You seem to have run into a terrible host (who clearly didn't have much experience at their position), while this is the restaurants fault and might have turned you off, the no reservation policy has been lifted at their new location, so if you want to try out their food you might want to make the trip to the Danforth.

Pizzeria Libretto - Awesome pizza!!!

I'm not sure if they're trolling us... or they literally just woke up from a coma they have been in since 2009? ಠ_ಠ

UFC 100 tonight - Good place to watch downtown?

All Boston Pizza's I think still show all fight cards on Saturday nights with no cover (and tend to be less busy than your average 'sports' bar.

The Butchers, worst experience ever!!

Ya it was posted on their old website, however their new site does not mention anything about the coupons.

Holy Chuck... Priest has nothing on this place.

Parking is also lacking on Yonge north of lawrence (you will be searching for street parking if you don't find one right away).

If you're going to Holy Chuck there is a city parking lot right at yonge and rosehill (one block south).

OR subway to St. Clair station and its a min walk. BP is probably a 7-8min walk from Lawrence Station

I would suggest Holy Chuck, just based on the accessibility, seating, washroom AND it isn't cash only.... oh and the food is better.

The Butchers, worst experience ever!!

You are not the only one. They have also recently changed their name to Marlon's Meat (http://www.marlonsmeat.com/)

Here is a lengthy review on the place and their practices.
http://trueler.com/2011/04/09/the-butchers-scam-webpiggy-dealfind/

Also this thread at red flag deals
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/merged-butchers-aka-marlon-meats-organic-meat-feedback-discussion-999078/

I also believe the coupons will be valid until labour day this year (2012), but I can't find a link to prove it.

Black Hoof..what happened??

I haven't gone since Grant left, I feared a place where the current owner walked away from a hugely successful brunch place, then stopped a 2nd idea of a multi-course fine dinning restaurant.... only to focus on a cocktail bar... the food would go downhill at the original restaurant.

Not to mention other key hoof people have left on to start some good food ventures.

ISO: Whole Freeze Dried Corn Kernels

Thanks, really useful links.

I checked online at LeBaron and it looks like (according to their catalogue) they carry Mountain House Freeze dried corn.

I couldn't call to verify if they have it in stock (closed at this time) but between the two toronto location hopefully they have it.

ISO: Whole Freeze Dried Corn Kernels

This good to know, but I would prefer to buy it in bulk, this is 28g (the seasoned ones at wholefood are 0.75g i think he said on the phone) I would have to buy 3 packages to make one batch of cookies.

Holy Chuck... Priest has nothing on this place.

Went yesterday (after wanting to go since it's opening).
I am a huge Shake Shack fan, I go to NYC at least 2-3x a year and go there probably 3x each time a visit. You can't get a comparable product in Toronto, the lack of Martin's potato rolls make it impossible.

However I find Priest pretentious, the product is often way to greasy and the fries are crap. Holy Chuck is none of that. The burgers are fresh tasting, the fries above average, the toppings fresh, the bun soft (and seems slightly larger than Priest). The location more convenient (right next to a subway station), much more (and more comfortable) seating and a full washroom for washing off all the grease.

Below are pics from the meal.
